Sony Ramps Up 3D Blu-ray Authoring Services

On Monday, Sony Pictures announced that its digital authoring lab had just started to create digital masters in the 3D Blu-ray format.

“With the introduction of Blu-ray 3D authoring, Sony Pictures completes its end-to-end solution for 3D entertainment production,” said Tony Beswick, senior VP of technology and operations for Sony Pictures. “We offer clients across the entertainment landscape–Sony and other studios—the ability to shoot, create, convert, correct, master and, now, author in 3D.”

Imax's Status In 2D/3D Conversion Challenged By Competitors

TORONTO (Dow Jones)--While Imax Corp. (IMAX) remains a leader in showing 3D movies, its place in converting films to 3D is being challenged by cheaper competitors eager to satisfy Hollywood's thirst for stereoscopic product.

The success of James Cameron's "Avatar," which was filmed with 3D cameras, is spurring studios to get more 3D content out the door quickly, making conversion a logical alternative.

Take Time Warner Inc.'s (TWX) Warner Bros. Pictures, which recently announced that "Clash of the Titans" would be released in 3D. It pushed back the release date one week to allow for conversion time.

Pioneer Introduces New 3D-Ready Receivers

"Pioneer continues to innovate the A/V receiver category with expanded compatibility for iPhone users. The addition of Bluetooth audio streaming allows consumers to keep their phones close to them to answer calls or select their next song without limitations of a wired connection to the receiver," said David Bales, marketing manager of audio products for the home entertainment division of Pioneer Electronics (USA) Inc. "Additionally, by equipping all models with HDMI 1.4, consumers can be assured that their Pioneer receiver is ready for future 3D home theater experiences."

The second model, the VSX-520-K, comes with many of the same standard features of the higher-end 820 edition, including an advanced sound retriever, auto level control and multi-channel acoustic calibration. Both systems are currently available at Amazon with MSRPs of $229 for the VSX-520-K and $299 for the VSX-820-K.

Michael Bay confirms 3D tests and new characters for Transformers 3

GET ready for giant robots and battleground debris to come flying out of the cinema screen at you.

Transformers director Michael Bay last year described 3D as "a pain in the neck" and a technological fad, saying he preferred old-school filmmaking and that his shooting style was too aggressive for 3D cameras.

Then along came Avatar and its record-breaking, extra-dimensional success.
Earlier this month, Variety said Bay, studio chiefs at Paramount and visual FX wizards at Industrial Light and Magic had discussed whether to make Transformers 3 in 3D.

HANDS ON: Sony’s New Blu-ray 3D Player, the BDP-S570

That’s right, we’ve got the brand-new, BDP-S570 Blu-ray 3D player from Sony, on hand and fully setup. Granted, the Blu-ray 3D feature is — at this point, anyway — unavailable because the player requires a firmware update in order to be compatible with forthcoming Blu-ray 3D discs, and beyond that, no 3D displays have streeted just yet — although, Samsung looks primed to strike first.

Regardless, once we heard that the first Blu-ray 3D players were available for purchase at Best Buy — thanks to our friend Tyler Pruitt’s report at Format War Central — we decided that it was time to take the plunge and see what the latest, greatest Blu-ray players from Sony had to offer. Hit the jump for photos of all of the unboxing goodness, and be sure to check back for our full hardware review!

MSi announces all-in-one Wind Top desktop PCs with HD 3D displays

MSi has announced a new line of all-in-one desktop PCs named Wind Top, and they’re sure to keep users entertained with high-definition 3D displays and premium sound systems.

The Wind Top desktop HD (1080p resolution) displays range from 19- to 24-inches. At the top of the list are the Wind Tops AE2420 and AE2280, 22- and 24-inch multi-touch displays respectively, equipped with processors up to Intel Core i7. The 24-inch model features a 120Hz LED display that pairs with 3D shutter glasses. (That 3D trend isn’t dying off so fast.)

The AE2420 also gets 10-watt speakers for increased bass, while the AE2280 has a pair of five-watt Hi-Fi speakers.

Rounding out the set are the 19- and 20-inch Wind Top AP1920 and AE1920, being dubbed as the more “eco-friendly” pair of the bunch being that they require 90 percent less energy than other desktops in their class. They’re also built with materials free of harmful substances, and their packaging is 80 percent recyclable.

All of these are set to be displayed on the global stage early next month at the CeBIT tradeshow in Hanover, Germany.

3D TV To Showcase At CeBit 2010

This is the year in which 3D cinema and 3D TV will make the breakthrough. At CeBIT in Hannover, Fraunhofer researchers are presenting technologies and standards that are hastening the progress.
Strikers and defenders furiously compete for the ball. Suddenly, the forward drops into the penalty area. Penalty shot. The penalty taker carefully sets the ball just right. Cut to the goal camera. Like a cannon ball, the leather flies over and past the heads of the spectators, who are completely awestruck.

Except that these soccer fans are not sitting in the stadium, but rather in front of a 3D television, far away from the hustle and bustle of FIFA World Cup football in South Africa.

Posible pa na maudlot yan brader Vhon some people suffer from headache when watching 3D and some find the 3d glasses expensive and none at the moment is concrete when it comes to 3D standard. But if it pushes thru it would take another 3-5yrs. before the mainstream market adopts 3D even if content starts to flood by end of the year. I just hope it would this time around.

ESPN: For 3D TV, the Time Is Now

Sports will drive the transition to 3D, just as it did to HDTV years ago, according to Bryan Burns, vice president of strategic business planning and development for ESPN.

Speaking at the DisplaySearch U.S. Flat Panel Display conference, Burns noted that 100 days from now, ESPN 3D will launch with the FIFA World Cup from South Africa. Seven years ago, he said, ESPN announced ESPN HD. And it helped grow HD to the point that most American homes now get HDTV. On January 5, the company announced ESPN 3D, and quoting Yogi Berra, Burns said, "It's déjà vu all over again."

Noting that people will have to wear glasses for the 3D effect, Burns said that explaining the difference between passive and active shutter glasses is going to be a challenge. He mentioned  BYOG ("bring your own glasses"), and how that was a problem because not all the vendors will use the same glasses.

Clearly, there are some challenges; people will need to buy new 3D TVs, and get used to wearing glasses. But Burns made the point that the price differential between 3D sets and today's HDTVs smaller than the cost difference between HDTV and analog TV seven years ago. He cited a CEA study in which 19 percent of respondents said they wouldn't buy 3DTV.  But seven years ago, more than 40 percent said they would never buy HDTV.

Sharp Projectors To Bring 3D To Your Home

Sharp announced that it will be releasing two 3D-ready projectors in May. The new projectors can display images up to 300-inches and can also be used for traditional 2D content.

Sharp's Deputy Managing Director, Denis Kerr, said, "Home theatre enthusiasts are expected to embrace 3D as they look to bring the 3D experience, currently found in the cinema, into their homes.

"3D requires a big screen to give viewers the full effect and that is what Sharp can offer to households across Australia. Only a Sharp projector with up to a 300-inch screen size can produce the cinema-like experience that 3D viewing deserves," added Kerr.

CBS and Sony Electronics Unveil New 3D Consumer Research Center

LAS VEGAS, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- As 3D technology and content continue to change the way consumers experience their entertainment, Sony Electronics and CBS today unveiled "The Sony 3D Experience." This research center and screening facility will focus on consumer preferences and perceptions toward 3D programming, as well as how broadcasters and studios can best deliver 3D content for viewing both in and out of the home.

The Sony 3D Experience will be located within the expanded CBS Television City research facility at MGM Grand Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas. The new center is also being supported by RealD, which is providing its advanced 3D filters and eyewear to help complete the 3D experience.

"Just as Sony and CBS led the way to establishing some of the most compelling HD programming for consumers, the time is right for a dedicated resource devoted to studying 3D in all its forms," said Mike Fasulo, Sony Electronics' executive vice president and chief marketing officer. "3D is a reality, as shown by the success of 3D movies and alternative programming like live events and sports, and we expect more 3D content and delivery options to emerge."

The facility is divided into two primary zones: 3D theatrical entertainment; which will preview and promote the latest 3D motion picture releases; and 3D home entertainment, which will highlight and demonstrate the newest trends for 3D in the home, including 3D compatible HDTVs, PlayStation3 systems and upcoming Blu-ray 3D players and titles.

Additionally, consumers will be able to learn about the latest 3D developments, such as the upcoming launch of the ESPN 3D Network and the new 3D channel resulting from a joint venture among Discovery Communications, IMAX and Sony.

Samsung 40C7000 3D TV review

So, the UK's first 3D TV is here, in the shape of the 40-inch Samsung 40C7000 LCD.

There's been so much hype about 3D in the home, that an enormous amount depends on the impression this first set makes; if people don't take to 3D at once, the feature may never take off.

Cleverly, Samsung has come up with a TV so stunning that 3D is only one of its attractions.

3D is well established in cinemas; the success of recent 3D productions such as Monsters Vs Aliens has been enough to convince theatre managers that it's worth investing in the necessary projection and viewing hardware.

There's a fun element in putting on the specs and ooh-ing and aah-ing at the more outrageous 3D effects which seems to add to the cinematic experience.

Optoma adds HW536 and EX762 DLP projectors to the 3D party

If 3D monitors aren't doing it for you, here are a couple of larger display options -- our lucky pals over at Engadget Chinese witnessed the birth of Optoma's two new 3D projectors in Taiwan yesterday. Pictured on the left is the HW536 cinema DLP projector (NT$36,900 or about US$1,150), which has HDMI input and projects a 1,280 x 800 image at 2,800 lumens with a 3,000:1 contrast ratio. Next up is the EX762 business DLP projector (NT$79,900 or US$2,490) that also sports HDMI input and a network jack, while delivering a 1,024 x 768 resolution at 4,000 lumens and a 3,000:1 contrast ratio. Just to add a tad more burden to your overdraft, each pair of ZD101 shutter glasses -- not bundled with either projectors -- will cost you a further NT$4,000 (US$125), in return offering a wireless range of up to eight meters courtesy of Texas Instruments' non-directional DLP Link technology (so no need to position any external emitters). A couple of close-up photos after the break.

3D Glasses Eliminated in New Toshiba TV Assault

EXCLUSIVE: Toshiba Australia is set to be the first vendor in Australia to deliver 3D TV without the need for 3D glasses. Now here comes Optoma.  8)

But deym! $125 for the glasses? If I need 4pcs...that will be a whopping P23,000.  :o :o :o

Granting at $1=46ph.

$1,150 x 46 = P52,900
$125 x 4 = $500 x 46 = P23,000
Total - P75,900

Not bad.  ;)

Now here comes Optoma.  8)

But deym! $125 for the glasses? If I need 4pcs...that will be a whopping P23,000.  :o :o :o

Granting at $1=46ph.

$1,150 x 46 = P52,900
$125 x 4 = $500 x 46 = P23,000
Total - P75,900

Not bad.  ;)

wow! grabe sa presyo brader froot! sana meron din na tig $0.05  :D

loko yun anu! ;)
