Planar SA2311W, a New 23″ 3D Vision Ready 120Hz LCD Monitor

Certainly an interesting move, coming from one of the leaders in high-end stereoscopic 3D monitors, Planar Systems, that is soon going to have a 23-inch 3D Vision compatible LCD monitor. The Planar SA2311W 3D monitor is a single panel solution with a 120Hz refresh rate and Full HD resolution, designed more for 3D entertainment than work, unlike the much more expensive stereo 3D display that the company offers and that are made to be used for professional work with S3D content. The new 3D LCD monitor form Planar is designed to be compatible with Nvidia’s 3D Vision active shutter glasses and although still not a lot of details about it are available, it is most certainly something to look for with interest. Planar has announced December as a release date for their SA2311W 3D monitor with a price of $449 USD. There is still no support for it in the latest 3D Vision drivers, but we’ll probably see it added in the next update as there is one month before the monitor will actually be available on the market. One thing that I’ve noticed about this upcoming monitor is that it will have a built-in function to control the OverDrive (OD) right inside the normal OSD menu… which is good as it should help in getting better image quality when in 2D mode.

U.S. 3DTV Shipments Reach 655,000 Through September

WASHINGTON: A total of 655,000 3DTV sets shipped in the United States through September, according to figures from the Consumer Electronics Association. That leaves just three months to ship half again as many sets to bring the total to 1.05 million, the CEA’s forecast for the year. But that’s entirely realistic, a spokeswoman said. The majority of TV sets traditionally sell in the fourth quarter as the holidays approach.

“We could potentially see as many sold in the fourth quarter as we have seen year-to-date,” she said.

Sony Optiarc debuts 12x Blu-ray writers, makes 'em friendly with BD 3D

Not that we haven't seen a 12x Blu-ray burner before, but it'll be a cold day in the underworld before you hear us griping about a little friendly competition. Sony Optiarc has taken the cellophane off of its newest crop of half-height writers, the BD-5300S, BWU-500S and BWU-500S. These guys will soon be shipping in a variety of retail and OEM configurations, offering up Blu-ray 3D playback, 12x toasting of BD-R media (dual-layer steps down to 8x) and a copy of CyberLink's Media Suite 8 with the latter unit. The outift's not talking dollars and cents, but you can judge the value for yourself when they start filtering out in the next few weeks.

This month na.   Well if there is one company capable of developing the highest level of tech for LCD display, that has to be Sharp.  Unfortunately, they do not export their awesome cellphones no more.

The Japanese cellfone makers are very clever.  They'd wait for Apple to release their device, and then the Japanese would create their own having features not found at all in Apple's products.   It was a very successful business ploy during the 1st release of the Iphone here, but eventually, Apple turned the tide because the Japanese makers stuck to their ultra cool clam cellphones while the rest of the world developed their smartphones.

Bilis ah next month na . . . well, thats too bad if they decide not to share it w/ the rest of the world. Sayang ang market, with a built-in 3D camera & 3D games if priced right I think the Galapagos will be phenomenal on its own.

A few months back I tried out a glasses-less 3D prototype from Sharp, where the cameraphone took "3D" photos and made them pop out in their parallax barrier screens. That tech's now in two Android phones—for Japan, anyway.

The Galapagos 003SH and 005SH phones will launch on the Softbank network, with both phones having 3.8-inch WVGA screens. A few things separate the two, such as a 9.6MP camera on the 003SH and an 8MP lens for the 005SH, plus there's a slide-out QWERTY keyboard on the latter too.

Sharp and Softbank haven't said whether you'll be able to take photos in their quasi-3D format, but I imagine that's the case. They've also partnered up with Capcom for some pre-loaded 3D games, including Mega Man, Ghosts 'n Goblins: Gold Knights, and Resident Evil: Degeneration.

You and I won't be seeing the light of day of these phones, but I'm glad Sharp's getting some usage out of their 3D tech, and not just Nintendo.

Samsung unveils 70-inch 'Ultra Definition' 240Hz 3DTV

Want to really impress your guests at your holiday party this year? This should do the trick: Samsung’s 70-inch “Ultra Definition” 3DTV.

Developed with oxide semiconductor TFT technology and a resolution of 3,840 x 2,160 pixels, Samsung is touting the monster display as the “world’s first” 70-inch ultra-def 240Hz LCD panel. It’s difficult to think of any others like this, so they might just be right.

Unfortunately, no word on when this incredible piece of display technology will be available for consumers. Given that you need 3D glasses to fully make use of this Samsung panel, it is more likely to head for homes than commercial uses, at least until everyone starts walking around with 3D spectacles in their pockets.

Glasses-less 3DTV is "Eight to Ten Years Away" From Taking Off, Says James Cameron

While glasses-less 3DTV is already winging its way to Japan in the shape of Toshiba's two tiny TVs, James Cameron reckons it's "eight to ten years away" until it autostereoscopic 3DTV properly takes off. For now, we're stuck with glasses.

He spoke about 3DTV at the Blu-Con 2010 conference today, and shared some interesting details on the extended version of Avatar—apparently those extra 16 minutes ended up costing Fox $1 million per minute, which is the reason they chose to re-release it in cinemas, so as to try and recoup some of the costs.

Cameron has previously harped on about how the industry needs to shoot more in 3D, rather than applying it post-production like the studio of Clash of the Titans, and the latest Harry Potter movie did—or attempted, in the latter's case.

Acer HS244HQ is the First 3D Monitor with HDMI 1.4a Stereo 3D Support

Acer just announced a new 23.6″ 3D monitor, namely the Acer HS244HQ which is also the first on the market to deliver Full HD 3D support via the new HDMI 1.4a standard, meaning that you can use this monitor with just about any 3D-capable device that outputs stereoscopic 3D content in frame packaged format according to the HDMI 1.4(a) specs. This means that you will be able to use this monitor for example together with your PlayStation 3 console to play games in stereo 3D, instead of having to buy a more expensive 3D HDTV, but that pretty much goes for any other device that uses the same standard for outputting S3D video in some form.

‘Harry Potter’ Saga Getting 3D Re-Release

After the proverbial kibosh was thankfully put on the 3D post-conversion for Deathly Hallows Part: 1, fans like myself are hoping and praying the same is done with Part 2. It seemed like the 3D craze had passed the Harry Potter series and it was safe to be shown in perfectly fine, wonderfully “flat” 2D.

But according to THR (via NewYorkPost) it turns out that we will be seeing the movies get re-released both theatrically and at home in 3D fairly soon. This is being done in a similar fashion to the Star Wars saga, except on a smaller scale. Warner Brothers’ domestic distribution president Dan Fellman commented on the limited release, “I don’t think a wide theatrical re-release could sustain the costs of a modern marketing campaign”, and the releases will also be occurring on Blu-ray, so if you really want to see the characters in 3D, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Gran Turismo 5 for PS3 is Finally Coming and With Stereo 3D Support

I’m sure that there are quite a lot of people that are eagerly anticipating the release of the Gran Turismo 5 (GT5) driving simulator for the PlayStation 3 console and are having very high expectations from the game. And with the release date tomorrow, 24th of November for Europe and North America and 25th for Japan and Australia that waiting is almost over, but the big question is if the game will really live up to all the expectations. And while I’m not much of a console gamer, but having played earlier games from the series at some point in time, am wondering more about something else that comes with the new GT5 and that is the stereo 3D support that the game will offer as an additional feature. However it is not very encouraging that Sony is not talking a lot about the stereo 3D support in the game before its release, it is just mentioned as some additional feature present in the game and that is it. But since Sony still doesn’t have a lot of games that support stereo 3D mode and the already available ones are far from being a top titles that can drive people to buy a 3D HDTV, because they want to get the best possible experience, I’m still having high hopes for the GT5…

Review:  Avatar 3D BD, exclusive for Panasonic 3D TVs.

Avatar 3D Blu-ray
Dec 01, 2010 (New Release)

... Avatar's Blu-ray 3D transfer delivers a mesmerizing 1080p experience that's about as close to perfection as any high def 3D release is likely to come for quite some time. It would be fitting (not to mention easy) to simply label this one as "perfect," and indeed, there are so few problems here, and all of them so microscopic in size, that it would border on the sinful to give this transfer anything less than a "perfect" rating.

... This Blu-ray 3D exclusive title is currently the best in the business. There's no point rehashing the "exclusive" argument; it is what it is, and when this title is one day released to the general public, it will push sales of 3D TVs like no movie before it and probably no movie after it, at least for quite some time.

Avatar 3D Blu-Ray Discs Hitting $400

There is a sure way to extinguish that last light that keeps current 3D TVs on life support. Keep content scarce to support nose-bleed prices and keep movies out of reach for average consumers. If you want to see Avatar in 3D at home today, you will need to shell out at least $300 and possibly as much as $400.

. . . It is generally believed that Avatar 3D will be generally available to Panasonic 3D TV buyers sometime in December. The general release is expected for 2011.

Michael Bay Says Transformers 3 Pushes The Boundaries Of 3D!

The director of Transformers: Dark of the Moon comments on recent rumours that the 3D isnt quite working out, tells fans not to watch it in 2D and seemingly reveals when the first trailer will hit...
Recent rumours circulating online have suggested that the third installment in the Transformers franchise is having problem with 3D. Well, outspoken director Michael Bay has spoken out and not only said that those rumours are nonsense but also seems to reveal when we'll see the first teaser trailer!

"Wow, I read these morons on the internet who think they are in the know. "We have have problems with our 3D????” Really? Come into my edit room and I will show you beautiful 3D. There has never been a live action show that has pushed the boundaries of 3D like Transformers 3. We shot the entire movie with 3D cameras. I actually loved shooting in 3D.

I will give full details of my process and why I liked 3D in the next week right before the Transformers announcement piece comes out on Tron and Narnia.

And don't watch this movie in 2D, we made it for 3D.

Michael

HDTV Expert - 3D TV Came In With a Bang, But Appears to Have Fizzled Out

A recent story at Reuters.com says that 3D TV hasn’t caught the imagination of consumers and that they are still largely sitting on the sidelines when it comes to a new TV purchase.

Even Internet connectivity hasn’t provided much of a boost to the ailing TV business, which has seen big-screen LCD and plasma prices sliced to unheard of levels as manufacturers try to kick-start the holiday buying season.

How about super-thin LED-backlit TVs? Those aren’t doing the trick, either. Instead, the hot items this year appear to be smart phones and digital cameras, which have also seen dramatic price drops.

The Reuters story quotes Frank Ingarra, a portfolio manager at Hennessey Funds, as asking why TV manufacturers thought it necessary to push a new generation of TVs right after many people bought their first flat screen sets. “People don’t understand the added benefit of 3D,” Ingarra said. “When you get into $2,000 TVs, you start thinking: ‘At what point do I really need this, and is it going to make my viewing experience that much better?”

Not surprisingly, the high cost of active-shutter 3D glasses – and their incompatibility with other 3D TV brands – has been a turn-off for consumers, according to Ross Rubin at NPD Research. Earlier research studies showed that some consumers are waiting for 3D technology to progress further, and are waiting for “competing technologies” to resolve their differences. By “competing,” I mean active shutter vs. passive 3D viewing, which uses much less expensive glasses.

The lack of content and the ill-advised exclusive 3D content bundles have also impaired 3D TV sales, in my opinion. There’s still not a lot of 3D content to watch yet, and in particular, the premium 3D Blu-ray titles that viewers really want to see, such as Avatar, are all locked up in long-term deals with TV brands.

**********************

At CES next month, we’re certainly going to see more cutting-edge TV products, although I think the emphasis on 3D will be toned down considerably from a year ago and TV manufacturer’s marketing efforts shifted more towards connected TVs and peripheral media players. Even though TV sales are weak now – a recession just can’t be overcome with marketing hype – the future of TV is clearly Internet connectivity.

CES: LG bringing flicker-free LW6500 Cinema 3D TV next week

Along with the world’s largest full LED-backlit LCD 3D TV, LG will be bringing the flicker-free certified LW6500 Cinema 3D TV to CES 2011.

LG has implemented a patterned retarder panel and 3D Light Boost film for optimized viewing and maximum brightness. Additional nitty-gritty specs include TruMotion 200Hz technology, 2D to 3D conversion, and HDMI and USB connectivity. Naturally, buyers will also get access to growing catalog of LG Smart Apps, including access to YouTube and Hulu Plus.

Pricing hasn’t been revealed yet, but the LG LW6500 should be rolling out “soon” after CES 2011 next week.

Sony: ‘3D uptake will be faster than HD’

European PlayStation chief predicts 3D gaming boom in 2011; ‘Sky will be key in driving widespread 3D adoption’

Consumers will snap up 3DTVs faster than when they upgraded to HD.

That’s the message from SCEE president Andrew House who was responding to questions on when the tipping point will be for 3D in the home.

He says that 2011 will be a major year for 3D games, although he admits the economic climate has made the company cautious.

“3D is going to be driven by building an ecosystem that’s based around content, TV penetration, and so on,” House told MCV.

Konami's 3DS dating simulator uses facial recognition to block virtual cheating

We may still not have an official price for the Nintendo 3DS, but it looks like you can now at least count on yet another unique gaming experience not found on other handheld systems. Konami recently announced that its "Project Loveplus" dating simulator for the system will not only take advantage of the system's 3D capabilities, but that it will also include a so-called "boyfriend lock" that uses facial recognition to prevent any virtual cheating. Apparently, if someone else picks up your 3DS and tries to play the game, your virtual girlfriend will act confused and respond with phrases like "who are you?" -- which, incidentally, is a question you might also want to ask yourself before looking for ways to import the game from Japan (yeah, don't count on this one being released over here).

Samsung readies 23mm-thick 3D Blu-ray player for CES unveiling

Samsung's obsession with making the world's thinnest Blu-ray player hasn't abated and the company's now announced plans to slim things down even further with a 23mm-thick unit to be unveiled at CES 2011. What we know of it so far is that it'll be able to both play back native 3D content and convert 2D to "quasi-3D," it'll come encased in a metallic, wall-mountable chassis, and it'll feature the now familiar trimmings of YouTube, Facebook and Twitter integration. Pricing and availability are obviously still under wraps, but CES is next week, you can wait that long, can't you?

Mitsubishi reveals 92in 3D and 155in OLED TVs

At CES today, Mitsubishi has unveiled two striking new TVs. The first is a whopping 155in OLED model and the other is a still substantial 92in rear projection 3D model.

Intended for advertising and other forms of professional presentation, the 155in OLED model isn't really a telly in the conventional sense. We would also be very surprised if it consisted of a single OLED panel, rather than being made up of a multitude of smaller panels. Nonetheless, given OLED's stunning vividness, high contrast, and infinite viewing angles, it's sure to be an impressive beast.

While we've yet to see the 155in model in the flesh, Mitsubishi did however have a small presence at a pre-show event here today where it was showing off its latest 3D offering, a 92in rear projection offering.

The Standalone Nvidia 3DTV Play Software is Now Available

Apparently Nvidia is already selling the standalone version of the 3DTV Play software in their online store as some readers have reported, although there were no official news announcing that yet. The standalone version of the NVIDIA 3DTV Play software does not require the user to have the 3D Vision kit and is being sold for $39.99 USD. This is the software required in order for you to be able to get the 3D Vision functionality for playing games in stereo 3D mode from your PC or laptop on a 3D-capable HDTV using HDMI 1.4 interface for stereo 3D content.

Optometrists endorse 3D for kids

American Optometric Association says depth-of-field gaming not harmful to young eyes, can aid in early detection of problems.

Nintendo has been warning parents of the possible adverse side effects of 3D gaming on young gamers from the time it unveiled the 3DS at the 2010 Electronic Entertainment Expo. However, according to the American Optometric Association, that warning may not only be unnecessary, but also counterproductive.

Today, the AOA, which represents family eye doctors, issued a statement saying that 3D in movies, TV, and even 3D on Nintendo's 3DS could be beneficial for children. At cause for its assertion is the idea that "3D viewing may actually help uncover subtle disorders that, left uncorrected, often result in learning difficulties."

Explaining the science behind its statement, the AOA said that the eyes . . .

CES: Samsung Creates 'World's Lightest' 3D Glasses

Let's face it, the reason most people are adverse to 3D technology is the bulky, often uncomfortable glasses you have to wear to enjoy it. They remove viewers from the experience and make the wearer look pretty goofy in the process. Samsung has teamed up with Silhouette, the renowned Austrian design firm, to change all of that, and the SSG-3700CR 'Feather-Light' glasses are the result.

The Feather-Light glasses use an unusual wrap-around design and boast a total weight of less than 1 ounce, can be custom-tailored with prescription lenses, and can be charged wirelessly. They are compatible with all of Samsung's new 3D LED displays, beginning with the 6400 series.

The SSG-3700CR's can be paired with a wireless charging system, the CY-SWC1000A Wireless Charger, which allows users to simply rest their glasses on a specialized stand to recharge up to four 3D glasses simultaneously.
