JVC announces the GS-TD1 full HD 3D consumer camcorder, we go hands on

2011 is shaping up to be the year consumer-grade 3D camcorders take off. Now JVC is in the mix with its new GS-TD1 full HD 3D camcorder which it touts as a world first. Thanks to twin 3D HD GT lenses, two 3.32 megapixel CMOS sensors and a newly announced Falconbrid 3D image chip, the device can record both left and right streams of 1920 x 1080i simultaneously. It also features 5x zoom and 64GB of flash memory that can be expanded via an SD card slot. Besides the full HD mode, the camera supports the more common side-by-side format AVCHD 3D as well as AVCHD 2D. For better in-field review, the device packs a 3.5-inch glasses free 3D touch panel screen. Outside of 3D video, the camera is additionally equipped to record so-called 3D sound using BIPHONIC sound processing. Pricing is pegged at just under $2,000 and is expected to be available for purchase this March. For the full details check out the PR after the break.

The 1080p 3D Bloggie Leads Sony's 3D Camera Onslaught

Backlash? What backlash!? Sony's going all 3D everything this CES, and that includes all the content you're creating, too. They're pumping out 3D-ready camcorders with glasses-free displays, including a 1080p 3D Bloggie that'll go for about $200.

The Bloggie 3D shoots 1080p in three dimensions with two sensors, and it's got a 2.4" glasses-free LCD screen on the back for you to check out your handiwork. So you only have to look dorky when you're viewing your home movies, not when you're shooting them. The 3D model is joined by a Bloggie Duo, which takes a page out of the Dual View book by adding a second LCD screen on the front of the camera.

JVC shows off prototype 50-inch 21:9 full HD 3D TV, says it could hit US later this year

When the Philips' 56-inch 21:9 3D TV was released in Europe with no US ship date in sight, darkness fell over our home theater world. Then, Vizio announced its own 21:9 3D TV and we knew it was all going to be ok. They say when it rains it pours though, and now it's looking like JVC will release its own 50-inch 21:9 full HD 3D TV in the US sometime in the third quarter of 2011. Other details are scarce, but JVC's talkative CES booth attendant also mentioned the TV might be sold in varying sizes and might feature internet connectivity. The possibility of internet connectivity was also supported by a few screens teasing an integrated information bar, which appeared on the left-hand side of the screen without blocking HD content. Needless to say, we'll be keeping a close eye on this TV as more news emerges, and in the meantime bide our time dreaming of the ultra-wide CinemaScope-style movies we could be viewing in late 2011. Oh and if you're curious that's JVC's newly-announced TH-BC3 soundbar positioned right below it carrying a sweet paper iPhone 4.

LG shows off 84-inch, ultra-HD 3D TV

Yesterday, we thought that Samsung had made the largest 3D LCD TV in the world. Right after we wrote that story, we headed over to the LG stand, only to be confronted by an even bigger and more awesome TV.

The key differences between the 75-inch Samsung TV and the 84-inch LG telly are that the LG model isn't LED-based and has a much higher resolution, with a 4K panel. It also uses LG's passive 3D technology to display 3D video without flicker, using simple, lightweight, comfortable glasses.

Our eyes-on session left us with mixed emotions. The 3D effect is very good, and passive glasses are definitely our preferred way of watching movies in the third dimension.

How about this, master I?

World's biggest TV: Panasonic's 4K2K 3D 152-inch Plasma

If you’re a fan of movies like Poltergeist or Videodrome, in which people get really “immersed” in their television-viewing experiences, then you’ll probably like the latest news from Panasonic - it’s developed the world’s largest full-HD 3D plasma display TV. As presented at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, the one-off behemoth sports a 152-inch, 4K x 2K (8.84 million pixel) screen, plus a host of other complicated-sounding technical marvels.

The big TV is actually just an oversized example of Panasonic’s existing Full HD 3D PDP (Plasma Display Panel) line. PDP utilizes a new process called super-efficient quadruple luminance efficiency technology. This means it can achieve the same brightness as a conventional full-HD panel in about one-quarter the amount of time, allowing it to keep up with rapidly-moving 3D imagery.

VIP 3D-Gamer is an HDMI 1.4 to 3D DLP Projectors Video Converter

It seems that the Optoma 3D-XL adapter may have a cheaper alternative that can be available on the market earlier, but with a bit more limited functionality. There is a new company called Video Innovation Products (VIP) that should soon start shipping their VIP 3D-Gamer conversion adapter that can have HDMI 1.4(a) stereo 3D input and output frame sequential stereo 3D that can be understood by 3D DLP projector. This means that you should be able to connect your PlayStation 3 console via this adapter to a 3D DLP projector and play games in stereo 3D mode. The adapter is just converting between the formats, so for the projector you would still be using a pair of traditional DLP Link glasses. The adapter might also be able to turn your 3D DLP projector into a compatible with 3DTV Play for gaming as well, although that needs to be verified if it will work when the converter becomes available in the beginning of February. The price announced for the VIP 3D-Gamer video conversion adapter is $199 USD and you can buy it also bundled with a pair of DLP Link glasses for $259 USD (the glasses do look very much like 3D Vision) or a separate pair of glasses for $79 USD each.

Vivitek reveals its own 3D-ready LED pocket projector

Vivitek Corporation has chosen the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2011 to launch its new LED-based Qumi pocket projector, which is aimed at enhancing the brand’s reputation for projection devices across a range of applications.

The diminutive device – which falls somewhere between a tablet device and smartphone in terms of size – is the first pocket, or 'pico' projector that is 3D-ready through the use of Texas Instruments' DLP Link technology.

. . . "We know that hours of operation, brightness and picture quality are key factors for users," he said. "The Qumi projectors incorporate the latest LED and other leading-edge technologies and features, such as 3D, to ensure that it is versatile enough to match the range of portable products out in the market."

The projector has native WXGA (1280x800) resolution, providing up to 300 lumens of brightness and a 2,500:1 contrast ratio. Its LED lamp has a lifespan of more than 30,000 hours, while its connectivity options include Mini-HDMI, Universal I/O (24-pin connector for VGA/component input), 3.5mm video-in and 3.5mm mini-jack audio-out.

Hands on: Nintendo 3DS review

It's fairly clear that the powers that be at Nintendo HD in Japan firmly believe that 3D is the future. "The 3DS will change gaming… again," executives said at the launch conference, citing the company's track record with the Wii and Wii Fit.

The questions are: is their faith in the technology going to translate to a real game changer? And is tacking on the clever autosteroscopic 3D screen to ageing DS technology really the best way to take us to this utopian three-dimensional future?

At the moment it's difficult to escape the feeling that the 3DS feels a little ill-formed - with the potential of the system on paper outweighing any actual proof that it can have a big impact. But this is Nintendo; a company that has a proven track record of making gimmicks work for the family market, and it would be premature to write it off.

It's a well-made handheld - a big improvement on its predecessors, and is unlikely to disappoint. This could be a great way of consuming 3D content - if you can bear the very small screen - and some of the games going forward look more impressive than the fairly skimpy immediate launch line-up.

But there is one massive point that could scupper the whole thing. The huge price - especially for UK gamers.

The 3DS is likely to cost around £220-230, and that pits it squarely against a full Xbox 360 with Kinect in the family-friendly market. And with a PSP2 announcement imminent, you could forgive people for holding on before they make that very difficult decision.

Video Interviews from CES 2011 About Sony’s 3D-capable Products

Some more interesting video interviews from CES 2011 made by Neil Schneider from MTBS, this time with Sony about their 3D-capable products, interesting to watch if you weren’t able to visit CES this yea. In the first part Neil interviews John Wyckoff, technical product planning manager at Sony, who tells all about the upcoming Sony Bravia 3D HDTV product line, including upgrades to the way they render stereoscopic 3D content, including a bit on how the shutter glasses work and why Sony’s glasses do not get the stereoscopic 3D image as dark as with some other solutions. As well as a bit about on what 3D content to expect this year to be available.

JVC GS-TD1 Consumer 3D Camcorder Unboxing and Demo Videos

It seems that in Japan the new JVC GS-TD1 consumer 3D camcorder is already available, lucky guys, and we are still going to have to wait a bit more before it becomes available in the rest of the world. An YouTube user called BlazeCustoms has published an unboxing video of the JVC GS-TD1 along with some sample 3D videos that can be used to get an idea on what to expect from the 3D camcorder that will probably have strong competition with Sony’s HDR-TD10E 3D camcorder. We’ll have to wait and see when both products are available, but even before actually seeing them or trying the camcorders I’m starting to like more the JVC as compared to the Sony camcorder. . . .

Samsung Galaxy S II and 10.1-inch Galaxy Tab II confirmed for MWC, 4-inch 3D display, LTE-based cloud gaming coming later

. . . Finally, looking toward the future, Samsung is apparently working on a 4-inch WVGA display with 3D capabilities -- presumably autostereoscopic like LG's Optimus 3D -- and an intriguing "Motion UI" control scheme. The latter will allow you to pan inside Google Maps and StreetView just by the movement of your phone, as well as zoom in and out of pages by tilting the handset up and down (a gyroscope will be required for both functions). Samsung also has big plans for LTE, with a focus on pumping out whatever you receive over the 4G connection to a nearby HDTV using dual display technology. The two applications we caught sight of were personal broadcasting, where your Sammy handset would act as an extremely sophisticated internet TV receiver, and cloud-based gaming. Here's hoping we learn more about these future ventures tomorrow.

LG Optimus 3D hands-on

Glory be the LG Optimus 3D. Okay, we'll get right to it: the Optimus 3D is kinda kitschy, but at the same time fun, inevitable on a mobile device, and still a great conversation piece. The 4.3-inch glasses-free 3D display's effect in games, film, and even the UI is pretty convincing using the set's applied parallax barrier technology, which is otherwise unnoticeable while the effect is off. Best bit? You can film your own 3D videos using the dual cameras on the back then watch them on your 3D set via HDMI. The Optimus is by no means a tiny set, though, still pretty comfy when held. Material choices are top notch -- as we'd expect hope for in a high end device -- and as you'll see in the vid, it is plenty fast with no lag getting in the way of the little demo we had. So why not take a few minutes to admire the pics and videos (which unfortunately will be very flat for your eyes) won't you?

Sony enters 3D laptop market

Sony is set to play its next card in the 3D hardware game, with its next Vaio F series machine.

The Vaio 5, which is expected to retail for a handsome sum of £1,800, is a stereoscopic 3D player, meaning the user must wear active shutter glasses to view content in the tridimensional format, which is a somewhat surprising drawback given the steps made by other manufacturers to create autostereoscopic systems for smaller screens like those on tablets and laptops.

Angry Birds 3D coming to Windows phone

It has been revealed that the game responsible for many a flat smart-phone battery, Angry Birds, is soon to be available on Microsoft Windows Phone 7, in 3D.

The game recently received the ‘Best Mobile App’ accolade at the Mobile World Congress, and is nothing short of compelling, ask anyone who has ever had to try and break the fixated gaze of someone intent on completing the game.

The game is in fact so popular that someone with far too much time on their hands has seen fit to make a working cake version of it.

The Great Gatsby 3D confirmed

As previously reported by 3DTVWatcher, Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s literary classic The Great Gatsby is to be filmed in 3D.

What may come as a surprise however is that the film is set to be shot in Sydney in Luhrmann’s native Australia, rather than New York where the book is set, and upon whose socialite circle the book comments on.

The news has been welcomed by the Australian film industry, and it’s a feather in the cap of the city that the tale be told from somewhere other than the city that was pivotal to the book’s dissection of that section of American society.

The film will star Leonardo DiCaprio, who has not worked with Lurhmann since the director’s modern interpretation of Romeo & Juliet, as the great Jay Gatsby alongside Carey Mulligan as Daisy Buchanan and Tobey Maguire as Nick Carraway.

The film is set to go ahead in 3D, which will prove an interesting twist on what should prove an exciting cinematographical prospect anyway, such is Luhrmann’s ingenuity in the field.

Microsoft Research shows off next-generation gesture interfaces, Kinect integration, other neato stuff (video)

Leave it to Microsoft Research to show off some cool stuff that may or may not actually happen on any thing you ever actually buy. Check out the video after the break to see the latest, Director of Microsoft Applied Sciences Steven "Stevie B" Bathiche showing off a variety of interesting interfaces. It all starts with gesture controls that take you well beyond the touchscreen, relying on a retro-reflective sash and a camera to detect hand position. But, things quickly progress to a flat lens called a wedge that can enable holographic-like imagery. Pair that with a Kinect and perspective shifts come into play, tracking your face to enable you to peer around like looking out a window. It's all just waiting for you below -- and maybe IRL sometime in the future.

ESPN 3D adds the NBA Finals to its broadcast schedule

Take that Mark Cuban. Everyone's favorite HD network owning billionaire called 3D sports DOA after deciding there weren't many people asking about a 3D Super Bowl, but now ESPN's 3D network has queued up its second championship of the year, adding the NBA Finals to its previously scheduled slate of regular season and playoff broadcasts. ESPN 3D has been broadcasting around the clock for a few days now (unless you're watching DirecTV) but while repeats make for easy demo material, if 3D is going to go from an interesting sideshow to an in-demand feature it will take more high profile events like these. If the Mavericks manage to slide past the Lakers or Spurs for a deep playoff run, we'll check back with our friend Mark to see how he'd watch the game if he didn't already have a few seats permanently staked out in the arena.

3D: In everyone’s hands

In the past 12 months the number of 3D-capable cinemas has tripled worldwide, and with content becoming more cost-effective and in higher demand than ever, a surge in 3D-ready cameras, televisions, computers and console games follows close behind. Georgina Pearson found that 3D is now almost within anyone’s reach.

Backed by major Hollywood studios and electronics manufacturers, a brand new market has opened for the taking – one expected to bring in $25 billion by the end of 2012. However, the industry-wide transition to stereoscopic 3D is not without challenges – especially in the television market.
Keith Andrews, CEO of Global Television Australia told Encore that one of the biggest issues is live sporting broadcasts – which so far have been a major selling point for 3D television sets.
“Live sport is particularly challenging and complex to produce in 3D. The action is fast-paced and often unpredictable and the environment is difficult to control,” he explained.

Acer H5360BD is an Affordable 3D Projector with HDMI 1.4a Support

If you still haven’t noticed, Acer is among the top companies pushing products supporting 3D technology lately, aside from all the top CE brands such as LG, Panasonic, Samsung, Sony etc. of course. Earlier this month the company has announced the successor of their popular 3D Vision-ready Acer H5360 projector with 720p native resolution – the Acer H5360BD. The main difference between the two is that the new Acer H5360BD 3D DLP projector comes with support for the new HDMI 1.4a interface – an industry wide standard supporting stereo 3D. This is a very good news for everyone looking for an affordable widescreen HD projector that supports 3D, and that can not only be used with 3D content coming from PC, but also from consumer electronic devices such as standalone Blu-ray 3D players or game consoles like the PlayStation 3. The Acer H5360BD projector has a native resolution of 720p (1280×720) and 16:9 aspect ratio, 2500 ANSI Lumens maximum brightness and 3200:1 contrast ratio, together with up to 4000 hours of lamp life.

More Stereo 3D Content for the PlayStation 3 Coming from Sony

Apparently Sony has serious plans for pushing more stereoscopic 3D content to the PlayStation 3 consoles this year and we are not talking about games with support for stereo 3D, but movies as well. On the PlayStation blog Sony has shared the above inforgraphic showing some interesting information about the notable 3D content coming in 2011 to the PS3. By the end of 2011 there should be nearly 30 stereo 3D-capable games available with some major sequels such as Uncharted 3, Socom 4 and Killzone 3. And apparently more and more people are adopting 3D-capable HDTVs as the information that 20% of the Killzone 3 single player demo downloads were in 3D hints . . .

Panasonic, Xpand team up on M-3DI standard for active shutter glasses at home and in theaters

Last year's problem was a complete lack of standards on active shutter 3D glasses but now we might have too many, as Panasonic and Xpand have joined forces with several other companies to push M-3DI as a single spec for TVs, computers and theaters. Initial plans for the spec cover only IR sync, with the RF Bluetooth technology included on many 2011 3DTV models (Samsung and Sony are notably missing from the list of participants) to "be considered" for the next step. We'll wait to see some cooperation between this alignment (full list of supporters in the press release after the break) RealD and the CEA's 3D Technologies Working Group -- which, probably not coincidentally is expecting proposals by the end of this month -- before believing the current 3D glasses mess will be resolved.

Sales of Nintendo 3DS - Record in the History of Company.

Although precise information about sales of the Nintendo 3DS video game console is currently unknown, the company itself claims that it managed to sell more 3DS devices on the first day than any other Nintendo portable game consoles ever.

"U.S. day-one sales numbers for Nintendo 3DS were the highest of any Nintendo hand-held system in our history. More details about U.S. sales numbers will be made public on April 14, when first-week U.S. sales figures will be tallied by the independent NPD Group," an official statement by Nintendo reads.

Nintendo made 3DS available in Europe on March 25, 2011, and released it in the U.S. on the 27th of March.

Satoru Iwata, the president of Nintendo, said earlier this year that the company planned to sell 1.5 million of 3DS consoles in Japan in its first month (starting from February, 26) and ship 4 million of the new-generation portable game systems worldwide by the end of March. Of those four million about 1.5 million were assigned for Japan, therefore 2.5 million were left for both the E.U. and the U.S.

Samsung's 3D TV experience is getting cheaper: two pairs of glasses packed in, $50 for extras

As the battle between active and passive 3D glasses display technology heats up, Samsung has responded by announcing its cheapest pair of active shutter 3D glasses will cost $50 (previously $130) beginning May 1st. Additionally, all of its 3D-capable 2011 HDTVs will come with two pairs of glasses packed in, unless the purchase is eligible for the Megamind/Shrek starter kit that already comes with them. This move comes just as FPR-based displays from LG, Vizio, Toshiba and Philips hit the marketplace. LG specifically focused on the cost of glasses as a selling point over Samsung in recent ads that ran heavily throughout the NCAA Tournament (embedded after the break.) LG is charging $10 per pair for its RealD-compatible Theater 3D glasses while Vizio has pairs on its website for $29.99 or two for $44.99.
