Question:

With our current display sytems, wether flat or PJ,  is not capable of 3D even though you play a 3D DVD? Or yung development is based on the improved glasses lang? Ang IMAX ba or other 3D movie houses uses a different projector for 3D  and standard movies?

Anaglyph 3D lang talaga ang pwede froot, the red-blue paper glasses 3D.
But for Stereo-3D, a fast display is required, 120Hz frame sequential is the minimum. Take note, not the interpollated type like Motion flow, TruMotion, Intelligent Frame Creation,  Auto Motion Plus, etc. that ECMs are hyping. The reason for this is that the dispay, w/o the viewer knowing it, is showing 60frames per second images per eye in sequence . . .   hence, the 120Hz needed for both left & right eye anything slower will introduce flickering and may cause headache to the viewer. These images that the TV is showing should be in synchrony w/ the glasses. The signal is transmitted and the glasses shuts the right piece while the left image is shown and shuts the left while the image for right is displayed. It should be that fast. Ever wonder why 3D glasses cost $125 a pair?  ;)

Or yung development is based on the improved glasses lang?
This is totally a whole new thing so,:
TV/Display + glasses + Player + content = should all be 3D compatible or 3D ready

Ang IMAX ba or other 3D movie houses uses a different projector for 3D  and standard movies?
AFAIK just one projector for 2D and 3D content . . . sa Dolby 3D tinatangal lang yung lens filter if they'r going to show a flat movie.

Onkyo adds 3D update to home cinema range

Onkyo has refreshed its budget/mid-range home cinema products, equipping them with features for a 3D world

Its receivers, speakers and Blu-ray players have all been given an update, but prices have stayed more than reasonable – with nothing announced creeping above the £400 mark.

3D ready receivers

First up is the company's TX range of receivers. The entire range is equipped with handling HD audio codecs, such as Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, and the flagship model (TX-SR608) is also THX certified.

The SR608 is a 7.1 setup, offering seven x 160 watts power output, HDMI 1.4 connectivity (for 3D-enabled TVs, something that is on all the range) and is the first in its class to be given THX's Select 2 status.

The SR608 can also cope with Dolby Pro Logic IIz and now Audyssey DSX, and comes with five rear-mounted HDMI inputs and one at the front.

Other models released include the TX-SR508, which is also a 7.1 system, but with seven x 130 watts output, and the TX-SR308 which is a 5.1 setup, which outputs at 100 watts.

Samsung 3D Starter Kit gets 3DTV and Blu-ray buyers started

Planning on buying one of those fresh Samsung 3D HDTVs and Blu-ray players now that they are available? Well, the good news from Samsung's press conference is that you'll get a free 3D Starter Kit if you decide to fork over the cash for them both. Included are two pairs of active shutter glasses (available separately for $150) and the 3D Blu-ray version of Monsters vs. Aliens, which is exclusive to Samsung for the time being. And speaking of new 3D titles, DreamWorks' own Jeffrey Katzenberg took stage to announce that Shrek will be coming soon. We're not sure how we feel about these super expensive sets, but the hands-on pictures of the kit do seem to make spending plus $2,000 for that new Sammy 3DTV and Blu-ray player a bit more enticing.

Deluxe Launches Blu-ray 3D Services

Disc authoring company Deluxe Digital Studios Inc. announced today that it is launching a full range of 3D services for the home entertainment market. Its enhanced capabilities are specifically tailored to the 3D Blu-ray standard. Beginning in April, the studio will launch 3D Blu-ray production services with capacity ramping to four projects per month by the fourth quarter of 2010.

In support of the 3D Blu-ray launch, Deluxe's workflow will incorporate a number of proprietary systems and technologies developed in-house as well as tools acquired from industry partners. "Many segments of the Blu-ray supply chain required a significant upgrade to support the complexities of the new 3D Blu-ray standard," stated Todd Collart, SVP New Media of Deluxe Digital Studios. "Our internal research and development team finished several of these tools in 2009 and we're completing the remaining development now. We're ready to commence with production titles."

All Shrek Movies on 3D Blu-ray in 2010, Exclusive with Samsung (Update: for One Year)

DreamWorks Animation announced yesterday the expansion of its strategic alliance with Samsung (see blu-ray.com, January 6), to feature an exclusive offering of the Shrek 3D film series in its entirety in 3D for the first time ever. This Blu-ray collection will be available during the second half of the year. The news was delivered at Samsung's Full HD 3D LED TV global launch press conference held in New York City.

"It is an incredibly exciting time for the industry at large, as we continue to see the proliferation of 3D in theaters globally at unprecedented rates and now — thanks to Samsung's innovation leading the charge — the capability to deliver a truly premium 3D experience for consumers in their homes. We are thrilled to be able to offer audiences the exciting opportunity to bring the world and characters of all of our Shrek movies home with them this year in 3D," said Jeffrey Katzenberg, DreamWorks Animation CEO.

With regard to back compatibility, Adam Gregorich from Home Theater Forum attended the press event and confirmed that the 3D edition of Monsters vs. Aliens 3D played back flawlessly in 2D on his laptop BD drive "without me needing to do anything." With 3D-capable hardware, 3D playback will also be seamless, as —at least with Samsung — there is an option in the menu that allows 3D BD content to automatically start playing back in 3D.

Update

In an interview with USA Today, Jeffrey Katzenberg confirmed that "you can't buy the Blu-ray 3D version of Monsters vs. Aliens or Shrek," and added: "They're exclusive to Samsung for a year."

Samsung and Panasonic Fighting over Avatar 3D Blu-ray Bundle

According to Australian tech site SmartHouse, Samsung and Panasonic may be fighting over the rights to bundle a 3D version of James Cameron's Avatar with the 3D-compatible HDTVs from their respective brands in the second half of 2010. Initially, Panasonic was the clear favorite. However, now Samsung is reportedly offering "serious money" in a bid for the rights to bundle the sci-fi blockbuster.

Avatar producer Jon Landau had spoken at the Panasonic press conferences at the IFA and CES fairs, and clips from the movie had been used by the Japanese CE maker to showcase its 3D tech. Panasonic had also helped in the production of Avatar.

However, Samsung scored a publicity coup Wednesday when Cameron attended the Korean corporation's 3D launch event in New York. The filmmaker took the stage after a brief concert by the Black Eyed Peas, which was filmed with 3D cameras and that footage (along with the rest of the band's tour) will be available in 3D Blu-ray... exclusively for Samsung customers. Cameron noted that the concert had been filmed with the same cameras he'd used for Avatar and added that Samsung had been "such a visionary leader in getting to market first with these sets."

It is our obligation to remind everyone that, despite all of the above, 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment still hasn't publicly changed its official stance that "3D is in the conceptual stage and Avatar will not be out on 3D Blu-ray in November."

After ‘Avatar,’ filmmakers at SXSW explore whether 3D is gimmicky or golden

In the wake of the blockbuster success of “Avatar,” is 3D a marketing stunt or an entertainment enhancement in moviemaking? Filmmakers at a panel discussion March 13 at South by Southwest disagreed on the answer.

Director Ruben Fleischer said “Avatar” changed the way we see movies. 3D elevates the entertainment value of films, he said. In fact, Fleischer said the sequel to his recently released “Zombieland” is being planned with 3D in mind.

“I don’t find it gimmicky unless you make it gimmicky,” Fleischer said of 3D. “I think it’s just a cool way to make it more entertaining.”

Austin filmmaker Robert Rodriguez, who screened parts of his new “Predators” at SXSW, said he’s a big fan of 3D. He said fans should see movies that embrace 3D technology, like those produced by Pixar, rather than flicks made by “ambulance chasers” who exploit 3D.

Conversely, director Ti West said the 3D aspect of “Avatar” was “cooler” than the movie itself.

“I think that’s kind of a bummer. You’ve got to wonder when the technology comes first whether it’s good or bad for the movie,” said West, whose films include “The Roost” and “Trigger Man.”

Staking out a middle ground between Fleischer and West, filmmaker Matt Reeves said 3D can be distracting if it’s not employed properly. The use of 3D depends on a movie’s genre and content, he said.

“I must say the 3D in ‘Avatar’ is amazing. You feel immersed,” said Reeves, whose work includes “The Pallbearer.”

Missing from the March 13 panel were filmmakers Quentin Tarantino and Eli Roth, who canceled their appearances at SXSW Film “due to unforeseen circumstances,” SXSW officials said.

S3D is heading on a right direction but let us wait & see where it leads to . . . meron lumalabas na glasses-free TVs, kanya-kanyang gawa ng shutter glasses you wouldn't know if your Sony glasses will work on a Samsung or Panasonic 3D TV at higit sa lahat wala pa naman content magkakaroon nga exclusive naman sa isang brand . . . yan ang mga panlaban sa sars ngayon :D

Downey Jr to lead 3D sci-fi 'Gravity'

Robert Downey Jr is circling the lead role in Alfonso Cuarón's 3D sci-fi film Gravity.

According to Deadline, the Sherlock Holmes star will play the leader of a team housed on a remote space station. When the outpost is hit by a damaged satellite, the crew is killed leaving Downey Jr's character and a female astronaut stranded in space.

The Warner Bros movie, which Cuarón penned with his son Jonás, will film in London this summer and be released in 3D. Angelina Jolie had been linked to the movie but dropped out when the project left Universal.

Downey Jr can next be seen reprising his role as billionaire superhero Tony Stark in Iron Man 2, opening in the UK on April 30.

Nvidia 3DTV Play: 3D gaming comes to TVs

Nvidia 3DTV Play, a way to let you play 3D games or videos on supported tellies, has just been announced. Now you won’t have to wait for Sony to push out that 3D PS3 update: you’ll be able to play extra dimension games right out of the box!

Nvidia 3D Vision already lets you peep 3D content on supported laptops, but Nvidia 3DTV Play takes things a step further by letting you hook up a computer with Nvidia GeForce graphics to a 3D TV, and pump in 3D content to your flatscreen right there and then.

Of course, the PS3 will eventually support 3D Blu-ray and perhaps even gaming, but in the meantime if you have the right kit, for $39.99 (£26) Nvidia 3DTV Play will let you watch 3D Blu-rays or play one of more than 400 supported games right now on a 3D HDTV (We checked out Just Cause 2 with Nvidia 3D Vision earlier this month, and it was sensational), and for minimal outlay – if you’ve already bought Nvidia 3D Vision, Nvidia 3DTV Play will be free.

Samsung 3D Phone Coming this Month?

A Samsung 3D phone? You’d better believe it. The 3D revolution in full screen TVs hasn’t even begun, but Sammy is already pushing ahead with the next dimension on mobiles too, and the Samsung SCH-W960 could be coming as soon as this month according to tipsters. Is this S Life?

Samsung Hub, which received this decidedly 2D looking shot of the Samsung 3D phone, claims that the AMOLED screen handset is capable of stereoscopic images, and can either watch a 3D TV channel (No we’re not sure which either), or even convert 2D video to 3D.

So far the specs for the Samsung 3D phone sound enticing, even without 3D: it’s believed to be sporting a 3.3-inch WVGA screen, a three megapixel camera with a xenon flash and dual TV tuners. But the good news is that the Samsung 3D phone is set to get official this month, according to the same site, meaning we could see it unveiled at Samsung’s Unpacked event at the CTIA Wireless tradeshow on the 23rd.

Caption Contest: 3D is a mind blow, everyone can agree on that

What do b-boys, random celebrities like Mark Sanchez, Andy Samberg and Hillary Duff, and the Black Eyed Peas have to do with 3DTV? We're not sure either, but that didn't stop Samsung from mixing them up during its "worldwide launch event" yesterday in NYC. Check the video (embedded after the break) for the above revelation about 3D from the JIMP troubador himself, but what was going through the heads of our friend Jimmy C and the BEP when this picture was taken?

Chris: "And see, just by turning this knob to the right, we can give Avatar a plot."
Richard Lawler: "If everyone starts wearing these, we're going to need new outfits."
Nilay: "Fascinating. You say this is called a 'lady lump?'"
Joe: "What? Bono beat us to it?"
Joanna: "That Neytiri, she's a handful..."
Paul: "I've gotta feeling that nothing of intellectual importance is happening here."

Panasonic Announces HD 3D Camcorder

Panasonic Canada Inc. announced today it will begin taking orders for the AG-3DA1, the world’s first* professional quality, fully-integrated Full HD 3D camcorder offering SD media card recording. Built to order and sold directly by Panasonic Canada Inc., video professionals will now have the opportunity to reserve an AG-3DA1 camcorder ($21,000 USD**). First deliveries of the camcorder will be made in this Fall.

“The AG-3DA1 will open up 3D production by allowing professional videographers a more affordable and simple solution for capturing immersive content as well as to provide a training tool for educators,” said Terry Horbatiuk, National Sales Manager, Professional Imaging and Display Solutions, Panasonic Canada Inc. “As the product is positioned in a more mainstream budget category, Panasonic camcorder owners will help to accelerate the amount of 3D content being created for distribution on Blu-ray discs and future cable channels.”

At just three kilograms, the AG-3DA1 is equipped with dual lenses and two full 1920 x 1080 2.07 mega-pixel 3-MOS imagers to record 1080/60i, 50i, 30p, 25p and 24p (native) and 720/60p and 50p in AVCHD. It can record for up to 180 minutes on dual 32GB SD cards in Panasonic’s professional AVCHD PH mode, and offers professional interfaces including dual HD-SDI out, HDMI (version 1.4), two XLR connectors, built-in stereo microphone and twin-lens camera remotes.

MSG to Telecast World's First Ever Hockey Game in 3D

Rangers vs. Islanders at Madison Square Garden on March 24 Will be Screened
in 3D at the Theater at MSG for Area Hockey Fans

Telecast Will be America's First Live 3D Sports Event Delivered to the Home

NEW YORK, March 18, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- MSG  (Nasdaq:MSG), a leader in delivering state-of-the-art, cutting edge technology to viewers, announced today that it will telecast the March 24 Rangers-Islanders matchup from Madison Square Garden in 3D, the first network hockey telecast ever produced in 3D. MSG will also be the first network in America to offer home viewers a live 3D sports telecast. In 1998, MSG was the first regular provider of sports coverage in high-definition television, producing all Knicks and Rangers home games in that emerging format.

The Rangers will host a special viewing party of this historic telecast at the Theater at Madison Square Garden that will include appearances by popular Rangers alumni Mark Messier, Adam Graves, Ron Duguay, Nick Fotiu, Ron Greschner, Dan Blackburn and others, as well as fan contests and giveaways . Tickets to the 3D screening are $20 and available at newyorkrangers.com via Ticketmaster.  MSG HD subscribers with 3D compatible televisions will be able to watch the telecast on a separate channel offered by Cablevision, and MSG is in discussions with other providers. For more information please visit msg.com/3D.

Panasonic looks to be early winner in 3D sales, image quality

It’s only been a week or so since 3D HDTVs and Blu-ray players went on sale in the U.S. at Best Buy, but it appears that Panasonic could have jumped out to a quick lead in the race to dominate 3D. The company has announced that it sold out its initial order of 3D sets, and while that quantity was unspecified and is probably a minimal amount given the lack of content to view and the high price tag, it’s also true that Samsung hasn’t made a similar announcement about its 3D televisions. Presumably, if it had something to crow about, it would have made that public as well, but perhaps the company is just playing things close to the vest.

According to Consumer Reports, however, Samsung shouldn’t crow about its TVs’ performance compared to Panasonic 3D sets. The publication reviewed a Panasonic 3D plasma and two Samsung 3D LCDs, and found that not only did the Panasonic provide superior 3D imaging (the Samsungs’ suffered from a bit of double-imaging), but its 3D glasses also worked better at more extreme viewing angles. Not surprisingly, the plasma also provided better black levels than the Samsung LCDs, a common finding already in 2D HDTV performance. HDGuru.com had previously looked at the Panasonic TC-P50VT20 and found it to be “an excellent HDTV.”

The question now is if Panasonic can keep the positive momentum going as Sony readies its first 3D HDTV offerings for sale in April.

New fund aims to boost 3D films in China.

HONG KONG -- Hoping to offer investors a chance to help slake China's thirst for 3D in the wake of "Avatar," an investment banker-turned-producer has joined two Hong Kong movie veterans to open a pair of film funds at Filmart 2010.

Triumphant Film Funds will attempt to raise $17 million before the Cannes Film Festival in May to back a three-picture slate of martial arts action films and 3D sci-fi films aimed at investors interested in China's film market -- where boxoffice jumped 43% last year.

"Hollywood-quality 3D at Asian prices is our goal," said ex-Lehman Brothers trader Guy Orlebar, who will try to tap his investment industry contacts to raise the funds while his film veteran partners ensure they are spent wisely.

Warner Bros to announce Montreal 3D investment

Warner Brothers is set to announce a major investment in 3D technology in Montreal on Monday, QMI Agency has learned.

The announcement will be made by Quebec's Minister of Economic Development Clement Gignac and Premier Jean Charest during a press conference set for 2:30 p.m. in Montreal.

Sources have said that the American company will set up shop in the city to develop multimedia and 3D projects, which are becoming increasingly popular in movies and video games. The company's arrival in the city is expected to create several hundred jobs over three years.

While several millions of dollars will be invested in Montreal, the facilities will not only be found in Montreal's Cite de Multimedia, a small technology park just west of Old Montreal.

Warner Brothers' arrival in Montreal is not surprising as the city has quickly been developing a video game industry and other new visual technologies.

The company may also expand its partnership with D-Box, a Montreal company specializing in 3D. The company, which is partially owned by the Caisse de Depot et Placement, had previously signed a deal with Warner Brothers for the movie Clash of the Titans.
