Maybe there won't be a 3D format war

FORMAT WARS have been a staple part of audiovisual progress since the second film was made, but this time round it looks like the whole mess might be avoided.

While we all remember Blu-ray versus HD-DVD and most of can recall VHS versus Betamax and a handful might have been around when Cinemaxcope was battling against a wide variety of competitors, it seems that the current move towards 3D isn't going to fall into the same trap, despite the various emerging standards.

According to Bill Foster, an analyst at Future Source, although 3D cinematography has been around for over 100 years already, this time it's set to take off, predominately thanks to the present level of available technology.

While Foster predicts that there will be something of a content gap over the next year or so, his company predicts that 3D is set to take off and penetration of 3D capable TVs will grow to as much as two thirds of the market in the US and nearly a third across Europe by 2015.

While many might still contend whether this latest trend toward 3D will amount to anything significant, especially beyond the theatre, initial findings show that in the cinema takings are 70 per cent higher for a 3D version of a movie where it is playing side by side with a 2D rendition of the same title, which suggests that the appetite is there, or at least that the novelty attraction exists.

Your regularly scheduled programming, now in 3D

"3D televisions are actually the best of their kind. They are the best 2D televisions, with the capability of 3D with the glasses," Future Shop's Russell Bonnicci told CTV News.

Panasonic -- one of several manufacturers designing 3D TVs -- has taken its prototypes on tour.

"If you've seen 3D in the theatre and you really like it there, wait ‘til you see it at home," said Panasonic spokesman Peter Fannon.

Consumer Reports checked out the new models, and says 3D looks promising.

"Many of the 3D demos that we've seen represent a clear step forward from the previous generations that we've tested," said Jim Willcox of Consumer Reports.

"They seem to deliver very good three-dimensional depth and resolution, especially with animated content."

But at Consumer Reports' labs, the verdict is still out until testers can get the new 3D TVs in house.

Next Nintendo DS will be 3D!!!! And won't require glasses!!!

March 23, 2010 - Nintendo has announced the 3DS, a new hand-held system set for release before March 2011 in Japan. This new system will be fully unveiled at this year's E3 show in June.

Are you interested in the 3DS?

While details are a bit slim as of now, the announcement stated the console would incorporate 3D technology without the need for players to wear special glasses. The 3DS will also be backwards compatible with all DS and DSi software.

Nintendo says this new portable machine will "succeed" the DS series. As of December 2009, the DS console has sold 125 million units worldwide.

Rumors of a new DS console have been buzzing for a while now. The latest instance came from President and CEO Satoru Iwata, when he reportedly told Japanese newspaper Asahi Shimbun the company was working on a DS successor that would have "highly detailed graphics" and use a sensor with the ability to "read the movements of people playing." Another rumor suggested NVIDIA's Tegra processor would power a new DS hand-held. Both of these reports remain unconfirmed as of now, however.

Several Japanese news outlets have reported on still unconfirmed features for the device. These include a new joystick, force-feedback, and increases in battery and wireless support.

The 3DS will be unveiled, and playable, at this year's E3, according to a Nintendo executive in Japan.

"We wanted to give the gaming industry a head's up about what to expect from Nintendo at E3," Ken Toyoda, chief spokesman at Nintendo told the New York Times. "We'll invite people to play with the new device then."

It''s worth waiting now that Sony announced there will be no S3D for PSP . . .

Sony Has No Plans for Stereoscopic 3D PlayStation Portable – Official.

Sony Doubts Success of Nintendo 3DS

[03/24/2010 02:52 PM]
by Anton Shilov
Sony Computer Entertainment said that it did not have plans to add any kind of stereoscopic 3D technology to its PlayStation Portable game console. Moreover, Sony said that it did not expect Nintendo 3DS, which was surprisingly unveiled on Tuesday, to become successful. Instead, Sony will enable stereo 3D experience on PlayStation 3 later this year.

“Our focus on 3D right now is on the console. There is a tremendous amount of opportunity on PlayStation 3 with 3D. The amount of interest in 3D from the retail side and game publishers is off the charts. We know we have a hit with 3D on PS3 and we are going to concentrate our efforts there,” said John Koller, director of hardware and marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, in an interview with IGN web-site.

Michael Bay And James Cameron Skeptical Of 3D Conversions: "The Jury Is Out"

The chance to charge higher ticket prices has every Hollywood studio rushing to retrofit their 2D spectacles into 3D. Some directors are pushing back, concerned there's an imminent future of cheesy-looking 3D that will stunt the momentum created by Avatar.

“After Toy Story, there were 10 really bad CG movies because everybody thought the success of that film was CG and not great characters that were beautifully designed and heartwarming,” Avatar’s James Cameron told me recently. "Now, you’ve got people quickly converting movies from 2D to 3D, which is not what we did. They’re expecting the same result, when in fact they will probably work against the adoption of 3D because they’ll be putting out an inferior product.”

That certainly didn't happen with Alice in Wonderland, which is grossed huge and gave Disney leverage to shorten the window between theatrical and DVD. The next big test for retro-fit 3D comes with the April 2 opening of Clash of the Titans. The film is tracking well, but also building a buzz that it is an imperfect movie that will greatly benefit at the box office because of its last minute 3D conversion. . .

Forget Avatar, the real 3D revolution is coming to your front room

3D printers are transforming how the world of design works – within minutes drawings can be turned into a prototype model, slashing costs but also giving consumers the power to become manufacturers.

3D is this year's buzzword in Hollywood. From Avatar to Clash of the Titans, it's a new take on an old fad that's coming to save the movie industry. But with less glitz and a degree less fanfare, 3D printing is changing our vision of the world too, and ultimately its effects might prove a degree more special.

Thinglab is a company that specialises in 3D printing. Based in a nondescript office building in east London, its team works mainly with commercial clients to print models that would previously have been assembled by hand. Architects design their buildings in 3D software packages and pass them to Thinglab to print scale models. When mobile phone companies come up with a new handset, they print prototypes first in order to test size, shape and feel. Jewellers not only make prototypes, they use them as a basis for moulds. Sculptors can scan in their original works, adjust the dimensions and rattle off a series of duplicates (signatures can be added later).

All this work is done in the Thinglab basement, a kind of temple to 3D where motion capture suits hang from the wall and a series of next generation TV screens (no need for 3D glasses) sit in the corner. In the middle of the room lurk two hulking 3D printers. Their facades give them the faces of miserable robots.

Fujifilm FinePix Real 3D W1 review

The world's first 3D digital camera features two lenses and two 10MP sensors.

With its bulbous styling and bulky 12.4x6.8x2.6cm dimensions, the Fujifilm FinePix REAL 3D W1 certainly isn't the prettiest of compact cameras. But as it's the first camera of its kind we can forgive it for not being small and chic, and its aluminium frame certainly is sturdy.

The W1 lets you shoot 3D images and view them on its 2.8-inch LCD, without the need for 3D glasses. To create the 3D images, the camera uses Fujifilm's 'Real 3D Lens System'.

This layers together two images to create the 3D effect, so the camera is equipped with two 10-megapixel sensors and two Fujinon lenses.

The 3D images the camera captures are incredibly impressive, but you have to get your viewing angle correct to take full advantage. When using the 3D two-shot function, the W1 saves the two images as one 3D picture so you can edit it, which we found most useful with macro shots where the effect can be overwhelming.

Hands-on Review: Panasonic Viera TC-P54VT25 Plasma 3D HDTV and Panasonic DMP-BDT350 3D Blu-ray Player

While Panasonic's TC-P54VT25 isn't the first 3D TV to hit Canadian stores, it's the first to arrive in my home theatre. For the past week, I've been watching a limited range of 3D and wide range of 2D HDTV programming on this 54-inch plasma, which will retail for $3,500. While my loaner unit was a technical sample as opposed to a production model, it appears to be working perfectly, so I'm comfortable writing a full review on the product.

The VT25 series also includes 50-, 58- and 65-inch models for $3,000, $4,000 and $5,000 respectively. Included with each TV are two pairs of active-shutter LCD glasses. Additional glasses are available for $150. Along with the TV, Panasonic supplied its DMP-BDT350 3D-capable Blu-ray player ($600).

The TC-P54VT25 is a very handsome TV. It sits on a stylish black rectangular base with silver trim along the perimeter. The screen is framed in a black bezel that appears to have a subtle espresso tinge. All V25-series plasmas are deeper than last year's V10 series: 90mm compared to 55mm. They come with an easy-to-use remote with large, well-labeled keys, which are backlit so they're easy to find in the dark.

Cosmetically, the DMP-BDT350 Blu-ray player is fairly non-descript: it looks like a standard-issue black-box Blu-ray/DVD player. Compared to earlier players, this 3D model is pretty speedy. It powers up in 24 seconds, and loads our calibration Blu-ray disc in 25 seconds. The remote is easy to understand, but unfortunately lacks backlighting. It has dual HDMI outputs, which is very useful for 3D viewing. For 3D, all components need to support the latest iteration of the HDMI spec: Version 1.4. Of course, all 3D Blu-ray players and 3D TVs have HDMI 1.4 connectivity. But what if you have a surround-sound receiver with an earlier version of HDMI. That will be a very common situation; which you can address by connecting the main HDMI output to your 3D TV, and the secondary HDMI output (which is intended for audio) to your A/V receiver.

Samsung UN55C8000 Review

Among HDTVs we've reviewed, the UNC8000 series is the first 3D TV, the first edge-lit LED-based LCD with local dimming, and the first example of Samsung's Apps for TV platform. It has the company's best LCD picture quality specs for 2010, packs in more features than ever before, and yet manages to measure just under an inch thick. As you can imagine, it doesn't come cheap.

The verdict? We haven't been able to compare the Samsung UNC8000 to any other 3D TVs in the lab, and until we do, our evaluation has more caveats than an ad for allergy medication. That said, 3D on this TV (with this firmware version), though definitely an impressive technology demonstration, won't satisfy videophiles, and at times even made us feel queasy. We'll take 2D Blu-ray for now, thank you, although we're interested to see how non-animated 3D Blu-ray content looks on this set.

Speaking of comparisons, in 2D mode the UNC8000 had a hard time keeping up with the better local-dimming LED-based LCD TVs available, although it does own the edge-lit crown for now. The Apps platform is probably the company's biggest win on this set, proving to be well-integrated, snappy, and chock full of useful content. Of course, it's also available on plenty of cheaper Samsung TVs. All told, despite its cutting-edge features and design, the high-end UNC8000 left us wanting better picture quality to justify its high price.

Sony Joins '3D Bandwagon' in S. Korea
Struggling Tokyo-Based TV Maker Eyes Breakthroughs

Japan's Sony, which is doing everything it can do to better compete with Samsung Electronics in televisions, is eyeing an increased TV share in the South Korean market ― a tomb for foreign consumer electronics players.

But this time, the struggling Tokyo-based company may get more chance to attract domestic buyers as it is planning to sell full high-definition (HD) 3D LED-backlit LCD TV sets from July at affordable prices.

The plan has mostly been welcomed by consumers here who are eager to buy sets at discounted prices and raises the possibility that Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics will join the price competition, analysts say.

"We can confirm our July launch plan of the sale of 3D flat-screen television sets in South Korea," Hong Ji-eun, a representative at Sony's South Korean branch, said Monday.

Officials expect Sony to introduce the edge-lit based 3D LED-backlit LCD TV sets with two sets of 3D glasses.

3D TV to face global test in soccer World Cup

LONDON (Reuters) - Hundreds of thousands of soccer fans are likely to get their first taste of live 3D viewing during this year's World Cup, the vast majority of them in cinemas rather than at home, according to football body FIFA.
Together with partner Sony, FIFA plans to supply 25 World Cup matches in the immersive 3D technology made popular in cinemas by blockbuster movie Avatar and expected to spread to living rooms around the world this year.

Viewers with 3D television sets who live in a country where the broadcaster with World Cup rights also has 3D capabilities will also be able to watch live in 3D at home -- if they are not put off by the need to wear special glasses.

Currently, Disney's ESPN in the United States, Prisa's Sogecable in Spain and Korea's SBS have live 3D rights. More such deals are expected to be announced "shortly," FIFA's TV Director Niclas Ericson said.

Sharp to start selling 3D TVs in Japan this summer.

* To launch in China, U.S., Europe by year-end

* Plans to boost LCD TV output sharply in 2010/11

* Panasonic starts new LCD panel plant ahead of schedule

* Sharp shares end down 1.3 pct, Panasonic dips 0.7 pct (Adds details, start-up of Panasonic's new LCD panel plant)

By Kiyoshi Takenaka

TOKYO, April 12 (Reuters) - Japan's Sharp Corp (6753.T) said it would begin selling 3D-capable LCD TVs in Japan this summer, the latest consumer electronics maker to enter the market for what is expected to be the industry's next growth driver.

The maker of Aquos brand flat TVs plans to launch 3D TVs in China, Europe and the United States by December, joining larger rivals such as Samsung Electronics Co Ltd (005930.KS) and Sony Corp (6758.T).

Sharp's new products will be the world's first 3D TVs using four-primary-colour technology, which utilises yellow on top of the three conventional primary colours of red, green and blue, enabling the TV sets to offer brighter, more vivid images.

"We are now one step closer to such things as 3D displays with the world's best quality or the ultimate display," Sharp Executive Vice President Masafumi Matsumoto told a news conference on Monday.

Sony brings ABC iView onto its TVs, shows off 3D to consumers.

SYDNEY, NSW: Sony Australia today announced the incorporation of the ABC online platform iView onto its IPTV-enabled products. This includes its latest release Bravia TVs and a new Blu-ray player specifically released to provide additional content to older TV users.

In addition to iView, which has thus far proven very popular, Sony is also adding On Networks, Daily Motion, Howcast and Concierge to its content offering. This brings the total number of online channels available to Sony up to 20.

For consumers that don’t want to purchase a new TV but still want to access new content, Sony has announced the release of the BDP-S370. This is a combination Blu-ray/DVD player with full access to Sony’s IPTV. It also has a USB in port for watching individually sourced content.

Whether by luck or design, this announcement came at the same time that Sony’s rival Samsung was announcing its 2010 range of 3D TVs. Not wanting to miss any opportunity to steal coverage from its competitor, Sony also announced the opening of its first 3D demonstration site, at the Sony Centre at World’s Square. Sony plans to open 14 3D sites by the end of May 2010.

“2010 marks the beginning of 3D technology in Australian homes,” said Sony Australia managing director, Carl Rose. “3D has already generated a lot of interest and excitement in Australia, and indeed around the world. Being able to demonstrate a new technology like 3D allows us to gain valuable insight into consumer reaction and the possibilities for this technology in Australia.”

3D, a protection against piracy: Chris Brown

Daybreakers and Bait producer Chris Brown believes 3D serves as ‘protection’ against piracy, which should be encouraging for filmmakers.

“When Daybreakers was the second most downloaded film, Avatar was the sixth, and that’s hugely encouraging because more people really want to see it in 3D and fewer want to download it,” Brown told Encore.
Brown’s 3D shark film Bait is currently testing its production methods and will start shooting in May. The producer says the team has been in touch with the creators of Sanctum, which is also shooting in Queensland, to share specific technical issues and techniques.

“We’re moving along quietly and with an enormous amount of attention to detail. This is a very large 3D film, very complicated technically with a large underwater element. It’s hard enough to do an action picture without 3D, and here you have to discuss how to shoot the action sequences because it’s very different when you look at something in 3D, when it’s coming at you. It’s the perspective and positioning, and where the eye goes within the frame. We’re learning thing things that are natural in terms of making a film.

“It’s rather like the early days of sound; the equipment is the size of a small car and you’re learning the whole time about what works and what doesn’t. You need to push the boundaries the whole time; it’s very exciting,” said Brown.

According to Brown, another exciting element is working with a new partner, Singapore – Bait is the first feature made as an official co-production between Australia and Singapore.

French Open to be shown in 3D

Panasonic has partnered with Orange France, Eurosport and the Fédération Française de Tennis to broadcast all of this year's French Open matches in 3D across Europe.

The 3D coverage of the tennis tournament which takes place from 23 May to 6 June at Roland Garros will be broadcast to Orange subscribers throughout France on a dedicated Orange TV channel.

Eurosport will receive the live 3D signal for delivery via satellite to selected Panasonic stores in 58 countries across Europe, including the UK.

A 3D documentary will be produced after the tournament and shown on the Orange TV channel.

Laurent Abadie, Panasonic Europe chief executive and chairman, said: "The collaboration between Panasonic, Orange, Eurosport and the FFT is a major step forward to show the potential not just of Hollywood blockbusters, but also live broadcast events.

For such a prestigious sporting occasion to be available live in 3D, will really spark the audience's imagination and provide a blueprint for the future of 3D broadcasting."

Eurosport chairman and chief executive Laurent-Eric Le Lay added: "Teaming up with Panasonic to bring the entire French Tennis Open in 3D to over 3,000 Panasonic point-of-sales throughout Europe is a both a technological feat and a natural extension of the relationship we have already built.

We are excited to be part of an innovative partnership that is taking this new and complex technology, combining it with an exceptional sporting event and bringing it to TVs in stores throughout Europe."

A new dimension in entertainment

. . . “We believe plasma is the best platform for delivering optimal 3D content," Reid says. "3D is at its best when it's an immersive experience and to achieve that you need a large screen, so we'll introduce 3D plasma sets at 127 centimetres and as large as 165centimetres.”

. . . Sony is also aiming for a July launch of its 3D LED-LCD range, with screens starting at 101 centimetres (40 inches) and “priced about $3000”, says the technology communications manager of Sony Australia, Paul Colley.

At the same time, Sony will issue a free software upgrade that allows the PlayStation 3 to run 3D games and release the first of many "PS3D" games on to the shelves.

A second software update, due later in the year, will let PlayStation 3 owners watch 3D Blu-ray movies.

Colley says gaming will be “a big driver” of 3D TV sales. “The 3D gaming experience is sensational – the perceived depth you get in the game is fantastic and it's also relatively easy to create 3D games," he says. "With most games you can view from multiple angles, so the game is already capable of creating and separating the left and right fields of vision.”

Coverage of sports in 3D will be another drawcard.

“Watching sports in 3D is amazingly compelling,” Colley says. “The great thing here is that 3D lets you see more like what the players see – you get a real sense of distance and depth as well as perceived angles.”

Nope. Exclusive, by-invite screening kuno. I doubt it kasi mukhang open space yung presentation area. If anyone's passing by the Avant store at Greenbelt 4 later baka makita nyo. No promises, though.

Samsung 3DTV launch at Abenson's Avant, Greenbelt 4

The C7000 production model.

The UNC8000 factory demo model.

The shutter glasses. Notice the on/off button on the right stem and the IR transmitter on the bridge.

The 3DTV line is available this May. Pre-selling is ongoing starting today. Prices range from P129,000 to P199,000 depending on the size of the screen.

The 3D effect is so-so. Nothing to write home about. It's clearly for enthusiasts. I didn't like the way it converted 2D programs to 3D. Very flat and not visually impressive. Although, we watched the Blu-Ray of Monsters vs. Aliens 3D -- it was ok. It'll keep many consumers happy.

Whoever thought of presenting multiple 3DTV screens at once had no clue of the technology. The IR on my glasses kept de-syncing as it struggled to choose which screen to sync with even when I kept focus on just one screen.

Personally, I'm not impressed with still using glasses for the home version of digital 3D. I hope someone comes up with a glass-less tech, soon. This seems like a step in that direction, I just don't necessarily believe it's the right way to go.
