AP - A look at the Eastern Conference semifinal series between the Cleveland Cavaliers and Boston Celtics, which begins Saturday (with regular season and playoff records):

No. 1 CLEVELAND CAVALIERS (61-21, 4-1) vs. No. 4 BOSTON CELTICS (50-32, 4-1).

Season series: Tied, 2-2. Boston won at Cleveland in the NBA season opener, then the Cavaliers took the next two games by a combined 31 points. The Celtics pulled out the final meeting 117-113 at home, blowing a 22-point lead but holding on when LeBron James missed a potential go-ahead 3-pointer on the fast break in the closing seconds instead of going for a tying 2. James averaged 36.5 points, 8.3 assists and 6.5 rebounds.

Storyline: Rematch of a second-round series from two years ago, when the Celtics survived in seven games on their way to the NBA championship. Even if this one doesn’t go as long, it should be just as spirited, since James acknowledged after the last meeting: “We don’t like them. They don’t like us.”

Key Matchup I: James vs. Paul Pierce. Their duel in Game 7 of the 2008 series (James scored 45, Pierce 41) was thrilling playoff theater. James hiked his career average against the Celtics this season to 30.9 points per game, passing Michael Jordan (30.7) for best all-time. It’s possible the only thing that can slow him in this series is the sore right elbow that bothered him at the end of the first round. Pierce, who missed one of Cleveland’s wins this season, is still the guy the Celtics go to when they need a clutch basket, and he delivered with his winner in Game 3 of the first round against Miami.

Key Matchup II: Anderson Varejao vs. Glen Davis. Battle of backup big men. Varejao’s energy wears the older Celtics out, and Doc Rivers was quick to cite him as a difference when he had double-doubles in both Cleveland wins. Davis, a villain in Cleveland for delivering the whack to the thumb that knocked out Shaquille O’Neal for two months, swung the opening-round series in Boston’s favor for good when he scored 23 points in place of the suspended Kevin Garnett in Game 2 against the Miami Heat. He has to produce against Cleveland’s deeper front line.

X-Factor: Tony Allen. The swingman sometimes seems the only reliable backcourt choice off a disappointing Boston bench. Probably the Celtics’ best option to defend James, and it would be a huge bonus if he provides some offense at the same time.

Prediction: Cavaliers in 5.

AP - A look at the Western Conference semifinal series between the Los Angeles Lakers and Utah Jazz, which begins Sunday (with regular-season and playoff records):

No. 1 LOS ANGELES LAKERS (57-25, 4-2) vs. No. 5 UTAH JAZZ (53-29, 4-2)

Season series: Lakers, 3-1. The Lakers' average margin of victory in their three wins was 17.7 points. The teams split a pair of meetings four days apart in December, then Los Angeles won the last two by 15 and 14 points. That included a 96-81 victory at Salt Lake City on Feb. 10, snapping Utah's nine-game winning streak, when Kobe Bryant was sitting out to rest his injured ankle.

Storyline: After needing six games to oust Oklahoma City in the first round, the Lakers move on to their third playoff meeting with Utah in three years. The Lakers knocked off the Jazz in the second round in 2008 and rolled past them in five games in the first round last year.

Key Matchup 1: Pau Gasol vs. Carlos Boozer. Gasol, whose follow shot with 0.5 seconds left in Game 6 against Oklahoma City sent Los Angeles to the second round, was dominant against the Jazz during the regular season, averaging 17.8 points and 16.8 rebounds. He had 22 points and 19 boards to carry the Lakers in the game Bryant missed. Boozer almost certainly has to be better than he was against the Lakers, when he was held to 12 points or fewer three times, making 5 of 16 shots in one loss and 4-of-13 in another.

Key Matchup II: Lamar Odom vs. Paul Millsap. Two of the top reserve forwards in the league, who often play starters' minutes. After two quiet games, Odom scored 25 and 26 points in the final two meetings with the Jazz. He wasn't sharp in the first round, managing only 7.8 points on 42 per cent shooting, with coach Phil Jackson saying at one point he needed to play better. Millsap averaged 17.3 points on 61 per cent shooting during an impressive opening round against Denver.

X-Factor: Wesley Matthews. The rookie scored 23 points in the Game 6 clincher against Denver, but shot only 39 per cent in the series. If he can produce in this series, it could prevent the Lakers from using Bryant to defend Deron Williams, who averaged 25.8 points and 11.3 assists in a sizzling first round. Matthews scored 19 in Utah's lone regular-season win over Los Angeles.

Prediction: Lakers in 6.

A look at the Western Conference semifinal series between the Phoenix Suns and San Antonio Spurs, which begins Monday (with regular-season and playoff records):

No. 3 PHOENIX SUNS (54-28, 4-2) vs. No. 7 SAN ANTONIO SPURS (50-32, 4-2).

Season series: Suns 2-1. Phoenix shredded San Antonio’s defense, shooting better than 50 percent in all three meetings. The Suns averaged 112.7 points on 51 percent shooting against the Spurs for the season and won both games at home. Even San Antonio’s victory came at Phoenix’s preferred pace, pulling out a 113-110 home victory on Feb. 28 despite 41 points and 12 rebounds from Amare Stoudemire. Steve Nash averaged 20.3 points and 12 assists.

Storyline: Off to a strong start in a rare role as postseason underdogs after upsetting Dallas in the first round, the Spurs now get a chance to deal more misery to Phoenix. San Antonio has ruined plenty of recent seasons for the Suns, eliminating them in 2005, 2007 and 2008.

Key Matchup 1: Stoudemire vs. Tim Duncan. With Duncan nearing the end of a career that will land him in the Hall of Fame, Stoudemire may have supplanted him as the premier power forward in the Western Conference. Even Duncan couldn’t handle him this season, as Stoudemire averaged 32.7 points and 11.3 rebounds in the series. Duncan did have a pair of double-doubles, including a 34-point, 14-rebound performance in the Suns’ 116-104 victory on Dec. 15.

Key Matchup II: Grant Hill vs. Richard Jefferson. Hill, whom the Spurs wanted to sign a few years ago, scored 17 points in both Phoenix wins but was held to just six in the lone San Antonio victory. Jefferson, so disappointing for much of the season that he was a reserve in the February matchup, has played better late in the season and that was the also the case against Phoenix. Held to four points in the first meeting, he scored 20 and 17 in the last two.

X-Factor: Jason Richardson. Comes into this series on a roll after averaging 23.5 points on 53 percent shooting in the first-round victory over Portland. He hurt the Spurs during the regular season, scoring 20 points in each of the last two meetings while making 15-of-26 shots.

Prediction: Spurs in 6.

Lakers will take it. :)  I'm sure they're somewhat relieved that the young, scrappy Thunder are out of the way.  Now they need to re-adjust their play against a defensive, methodical Jazz team (although the Lakers will have the same PG match-up problems).  Bynum's injury will be key - LA will need all the big guys it has to contain Boozer.  Could be a blessing in disguise for Odom though so that he'll have the PT and finally play at the level that he should be playing in the post-season.  IMO, Lakers in 5 or 6.

Celtics lead 54-43 at the half. Lead would have been larger if the refs weren't blatantly favoring the Cavs in every call.

Let's go Celtics! Finish them off!  ;D

The C's are gonna have to play through the zebras to win this game.

Also, they better be ready for that inevitable explosion by Lebron in the 2nd half.

Crap. Celtics collapse in the 3rd again. How can they let Mo freakin' Williams take over the game like that? I don't think they'll get this game with the momentum clearly on Cleveland's side right now.

second round is complete i only miss utah advancing.

Cavs-Celtics
clearly a toe to toe game 1 except for the last quarter, lebron's peaking and nothing can stop him.
if doc rivers wont do drastic change in his strategy the cavs will take this 4-2

Magic-Hawks
with a few days rest the orlando squad are in a challenge in this series howard will has his hands full against horford, both team have the ame firepower the only player can decide this series is josh smith, if he plays top notch they will advance if not ( like i will predict) the magic will prevail in 7 games

Lakers-Jazz
Lakertrain on a roll even with bynum tearing a meniscus, probably the best thing happened in this series... why? because he can rest a few games or two and be ready for the next series, i dont see kobe letting this go... 4-2
========
edit
bynum played game 1 in their series, i guess he saw the injury sheet of kobe and decided to play he..he :D

Spurs- Suns
now this is a series, even steven both can run, play small ball, big ball and manu is on a tear!!! but sadly spurs fans medyo bias ako dito .. suns in 7  ;D

Celtics should've been up 2-0 but they let game 1 slip away from them. I just hope they hold serve at their home court. They have been a better road team this season and have lost a number of games at home. Can't say I'm not worried.

Agree.  Dapat 2-0 na.  I still would want to see Boston go up against the Lakers for the much awaited rematch in the Finals.  It's now or never ( medyo Tanders na ang Boston eh.. ).   If not, I'd settle for a Lakers-Cavs or even a rematch of Lakers-Magic.  But nothing beats an LA-Boston grudge match ( ala Crispa Toyota of the golden PBA years )...

Oh yes!  The Spurs, for me, is one of the most resilient teams in the NBA.  They may be boring, deliberate and devoid of highlight moves ( except for a few Manu and Parker poster plays ) but they deliver and get things done.  This is a very interesting series vs the Suns.  It's truly a battle of offense ( suns ) versus defense (spurs).  Despite losing game 1, I'd go for defense over offense.  Spurs in 7 games.

AP - A look at the Eastern Conference semifinal series between the Orlando Magic and Atlanta Hawks, which begins Tuesday (with regular season and playoff records):

No. 2 ORLANDO MAGIC (59-23, 4-0) vs. No. 3 ATLANTA HAWKS (53-29, 4-3)

Season series: Magic, 3-1. Atlanta pulled out an 86-84 victory on March 24 in one of the most thrilling finishes of the NBA season, when Josh Smith just beat the buzzer with a follow dunk of Joe Johnson's missed shot. It was all Magic before that, winning the first three meetings by an average of 22.3 points. The Hawks shot under 40 per cent in all three losses and barely cracked that mark in their victory, finishing at 40.8 per cent. The 86 points were the Hawks' high for the series.

Storyline: The Southeast Division rivals took far different routes to the second round. The well-rested Magic had the lone sweep of the first round and last played on April 26, while the Hawks were the only team that was forced to the limit, finally finishing off the Milwaukee Bucks in Game 7 on Sunday.

Key Matchup 1: Dwight Howard vs. Al Horford. Howard was frustrated by constant foul trouble throughout the first-round victory over Charlotte, but seeing his hometown team could brighten his mood. He had some massive performances against the Hawks in the regular season, going for 31 points and 19 rebounds in one win, 22 and 17 in another before finishing with 19 points and 24 boards in Atlanta's lone victory. Horford had two decent outings against his fellow All-Star, but was held to four points or fewer twice.

Key Matchup II: Jameer Nelson vs. Mike Bibby. Nelson helped make up for Howard's lack of productivity by averaging 23.8 points in the first round. The Hawks need Bibby, their most veteran post-season performer, to be consistent. He scored 13.5 points per game in their four first-round wins but only 7.7 in the three losses.

X-Factor: The benches. Atlanta has the league's top sixth man in Jamal Crawford, but Orlando might have the deepest bench in the league. That allowed the Magic to beat the Hawks in the regular season even while missing Nelson in one game and Vince Carter in another. Crawford shot the ball terribly against Orlando, with a pair of 4-for-14 nights and another 4-for-13. If he struggles like that he'll shoot the Hawks right out of the series.

Prediction: Magic in 6.
