Avr pinakamababang power consumption
« on: May 05, 2011 at 12:13 PM »

It's a wild idea but I hope you hear me out.

Get the receiver with preouts, then get 5 channels of a Class D amp (kemozavi sells them here and some other guy I'm not sure) and mash them together. Your receiver will just act as a processor and it's consumption will only be the idle bias of the internal amps plus the other vlsi electronics inside.

With the Class D on the top of the efficiency list of amplifier types, I bet this setup will be the setup with the least power consumption.

Master J,

Meron ding mga AVR na Class-D yung built-in amp (Pioneer Elite comes to mind). O kaya mga separates from brands like Rotel na Class-D yung power amp. :)

Master S,

Frankly, I will not buy a pure Class D AVR, sa class AB pa din ako. But that's just me.

Yup, Master J. Yung ICEpower modules (from B&O ICEpower) are Class D implementations by Bang and Olufsen (kalaban ng mga Tripath-based modules).

http://www.ultimateavmag.com/content/pioneer-elite-sc-09tx-av-receiver-measurements

Ako din, up until recently talagang Class-AB din ang preferred ko (or Class A kung mayaman ako sa kuryente). Pero I've been hearing more and more Class-D amps na comparable sa Class-AB yung output to my ears kaya nagbabago yung pananaw ko. These days, I care less kung Class D siya or Class A or Class AB, basta gusto ko yung tunog. :)

I see, so tama pala ang dinig ko. Though I never knew that Pioneer has receivers with Class D amps already. I once saw (and opened  ;D) a Samsung HTiB and saw Tripath chips in here for the power amps, cool looking devices except the smps is kaput.

I also care less if it's AB or D or H or A (ang init na ng panahon) as long as it's clear and fits the bill, I'm still a little hesitant about reliability and durability of Class D as opposed to the olden Class AB. Maybe in 10 years time, when the technology matures and there are models we can call vintage.  ;D

Totoo din na medyo bago-bago pa ang mga full-range Class D designs, and yung mga medyo proven reliable are mostly yung mga pricier ones (Lyngdorf, Mark Levinson, Jeff Rowland, PS Audio, Bel Canto, etc... and to some extent NAD, Yamaha, Onkyo, Rotel and Pioneer). Mostly sa PA systems ko nakikita yung Class G and H designs, wala pa ako nakita sa domestic audio and HT (though I'm sure meron din out there).

Mga boss, newbie lng po aq d2. Ask q lng po if malakas ba s kuryente ang 50watts amplifier tapos may dalawang tig-100watts n speaker. Biglang taas kc kuryente nmin tapos aq sinisisi ng asawa q kc araw araw aq nagpapatugtog, mga 3-4hours a day.

Minsan yun constant open and close ng freezer also contributes to the higher consumption. But normally 4 hours a day for that amp looks like hindi naman ganun ka-significant.

download this and use it: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.meralco.phone.move&hl=en

This will enable you to more or less estimate the power consumption of your amp if used 4 hours per day in a month. BTW if its a 50 watt amp it doesn't mean that it draws 50 watts constantly.  There are other variables.

Unless your using the amplifier 24/7  or using a "Monster AVR", I do not think an AVR will put a big dent on your electricity bills.

I tried to compute and IMHO the impact is not that much. I hope my math is correct.

50 watts Ampli played for 4 hours = 200 watts per day and 6000 watts or 6 Kilowatts for 30 days. If your electric bill charges 11 pesos per Kilowatt then it is only 66 pesos additional to your electric bill. On the other hand if speakers also consumes electricity. Then your 100 watts pair of speakers will have a total of 800 watts for 4 hours of usage and a total of 24000 watts or 24 Kilowatts for 30 days, Multiply it with you meralco per kilowatt charge then you have roughly around 264 pesos for that. So more or less an additional of 330 pesos on top of your bill. HTH..

Loudspeaker does not consumes electricity unless it is of the Powered Variety or a Powered subwoofer. Only the Amplifier consumes electricity.

Thanks qguy for the clarification. If that's the case then the amplifier only comsumes less than 100 pesos a month.

Passive speakers "gets" it's power from amplifier.
