Hi Sirs,

I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me. I've been reading back on this thread for quite some time now. Finally, having been convinced by several posts that say Surplus CD players from the Pier are good buys, I went there and got one for myself. I picked up a Victor XL-V501 for P2000.

It's still in a pretty good state cosmetically, quite heavy and is equipped with gold-plated RCA line-out (fixed and variable). It plays Original CD's without a hitch and is a really big improvement over playing CD's on my DVD player, although this would be expected. Anyway, I'm having problems with playing non-original CD's and CD's I burned with Toast on my Mac. When playing these kinds of CD's, a sound similar to static is heard, sometimes it's a clicking sound at fixed intervals. I did audition it with CD's that I brought before buying and, needless to say, there were no problems with its sound output at the store. I only noticed it when I hooked it up to my system. I'm frustrated because much of my music collection (FLAC) is on my Mac. I wanna burn them to CD's so I can enjoy listening to them without having to hook-up my computer to my amp.

Are there any adjustments that I can do with regards to the player? Does it need lens cleaning? Can it be repaired or tweaked? Is it worth repairing at all? If nothing can be done, I might just take it back to the store and exchange it for a different unit.

Any input from you guys will be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

It may need lens cleaning. If after lens cleaning it is still unable to read burned CDR then you may have to adjust focus trimpot.

Pls remember that the lens on these CDs were not designed for CDRs of today. So if neither cleaning or focus trimpot adjustment works you may need to replace the lens so you can play your CDRs.

@hebrew

Thanks for the info, Sir. Were you able to play CDR's on your unit? I'm guessing mine is on it's way to suffering the same fate as yours. I'm not sure though if it's worth the time and effort to have it repaired and I doubt if parts are still be available for this dinosaur.:)

@rascal101

Did lens cleaning already, still no luck. I doubt if it's just dust though coz' original CD's play just fine. I agree with you, CDR's didn't exist when this thing was made. I talked to the owner of the store where I bought the unit just now, I'll be bringing it back to them to have it checked. I'll just ask for a replacement if all else fails. Never had experience with focus trimpot adjustment so that would be a last resort for me. I'll update later when I get back from the store. Thanks for the help, Sir.

Bro cmagalona,,, We have both problem encountered when played cd-r on my DENON DCD-1100, I heared statics sounds also and it was like rain drops but not all occassion specially at original one... I think bro Rascal101 is correct that our vintage CD player was not capable for today cd-r recording mostly pirated cd. I will do what Bro Rascal101 recommendation regarding lens focusing adjustment and will keep you posted for any development... VhinX

This is the problem with Pier surplus CD Players. Simple lens cleaning won't do. Most of those being sold there already had their lenses adjusted, and will eventually fail. You can stick with your unit since ok naman yata sya with other CDs or you can try your luck and exchange unit. Swerte-swerte lang mga units doon and you should really be careful. Sadly, I think you can no longer find replacement lens for this model sa Raon

Bro Rascal101,,, Thanks for the info... BTW, I already find the rootcause of my CD player intermittent static sounds heared when playing CD's,. Clean the lens and adjust the lens focus and gain trimpot does not resolved the problem, The last thing to do was tried to plug the player at 110VAC (100VAC before) and now the static sound noise likes rain drops was loss at all any CD's & CD-R's I play...

Place a 1uF X1 or X2 capacitor between line 1 and line 2 of your AC cord. And, make sure to parallel a 1Megaohm bleeder resistor across the capacitor. After which, connect your CDP to 100Vac.

Bro, replace the power diodes with 11dq10. These are schotkkys and the best i used so far. Now all my upgrades within this rating are the replacement i use (cd player, DACs, tuner). Rating is at 1.1amps, 100v.

Bro Vhinx, if you have trouble acquiring the schottky's I have a lot of BYV26C ultrafast rectifier diodes with Trr or reverse recovery time <= 30ns.

Ano ba dapat ang tolerance ng AC line voltage ng Meralco? +/-10%? Kung +/-10% kasi, acceptable ang 198V-242V. Kung +/-5%, medyo mahirap ata ma-accomplish iyun ... iniisip ko lang.
