Minidisc Players
« on: Mar 07, 2002 at 03:48 AM »
Anyone here uses md for their music needs?

I prefer using this medium since I travel alot and its very easy to carry them around (their players are very very small).

Also, is there anyone here nows where I can find blank md's since I almost used up most of my stock.

Mobile One (branches at Park Square 1 and Greenbelt) sells Minidiscs. I think Image at Harrison Plaza sells them too. You can also try the AVID stores.

I'm using SHARP MDMT 821,great MD player/recorder never had any problems since i bought it, almost 3 yrs ko ng gamit but still looks and perform like new. What i love about MD is you can record your favorite songs so you'll have them all in just one MD(74 or 80), and if you have the newer version you can record 320 min. of music on just one 80 min MD. The sound is near CD quality if not better IMO. I love MD. :-*

yup its the MDLP, i think they released it in Japan in 2000. I bought an MDLP Sharp (forgot which model).  It can compress four CD's in one MD (about 320 min.).  I also have a Pioneer MD car stereo, great for showing of  ;D and a portable one (easy to hide in the office) ;D

regarding sound quality, i really dont notice any difference from my orig cd and my copied md (although internet sites say there is a slight loss)

too bad md isnt really well known here. in Japan its everywhere

bently:
i think i saw an md component in abenson here in alabang u might want to check it out.  i dont know how much tho

HI apatmata,

How much in peso is the MDLP and one blank md? youre right men,...kalat na kalat nga ito sa Japan,... its like a pack of bubblegum kung ibenta ang mga md doon  :),.. lalo na yung mga mini cellphone nila  ;D,.... bakit kaya hindi ito patok dito sa pinas,.... my friend merong sony md recorder/player very small talaga sya and we record a live band,... ok ang tunog,.. crispy ang mga cymbals,... mas maganda talaga kesa sa tape recorder. :)

I planning to buy talaga,.. meron kaya sa RAON nito?

sorry blued pero yung mga nakita kong models ng MD players dito is not yet MDLP but then tagal na kong hindi nakakita ng MD players. last time I saw one was three weeks ago in Abenson Alabang branch. im not sure now. cant say in Raon havent been there lately eh.

but if you got a friend in Japan, i think the deck (stand alone) cost about 30-45T yen and the portable w/ record is about 25-30T.  the blank md i think is 1500-2000 yen per ten pack depending on the brand (i recommend the sony and maxell tdk brands) that was last Dec. when i went there.

the best thing that i saw in japan was their music atm (dont know what its called). you just insert your md and you can get your favorite single from an artist. no need to buy the whole album. sana meron din non dito  :(

I've been using an Aiwa MD player for about 2.5-3 years now. Sound is great, it's super portable, but, yes, blank MD's are hard to come by. They're also prohibitively expensive here in the Philippines. If ever, magpabili nalang kayo sa HK...it's really cheap over there. A case of 10 MD's will run you about Php 500+.

One thing tho...HIRAP magrecord! I don't have an optical deck to use, so I go the old analog input way, which is like dubbing a cassette tape.

Guess I've been spoiled by my CD burner. Hehehehe ;D

Cheers.

apatmata,
I also use Pioneer MD player in my Car (forgot the model).
what's your player model? I have'nt been able to use this since it needs some cleaning and i have not been able to find an md lens cleaner.
For home use, i got a Sony Md player/recorder bought last December, around 11K. I used to use a Sharp mini compo but the cd broke down.

i usually buy my blank md's at japan (dami akong kaibigan doon eh).  hindi naman mahirap magrecord from cd to md as long as na meron kang optical cord. just press the record button yun na yun. automatic pa yung track numbering and minimal yung loss nya. you should buy an optical cord ;)

Apatmata:

x-plod series nila kaya medyo mahal pa nung time na iyon.

If anyone having problem with their recording, most probably yung head ay madumi na.  I have an MD head cleaner here kung gusto ninyo hiramin no problem, pero wala akong MD lens cleaner.

Meron din ako ditong spare na optical cable which I am selling discounted na, di ko kasi ma edit yung price kasi I was using a different handle then.

apatmata: I have a really good optical cord na, pero not an optical-capable CD deck to use it with.  :(

I want to use my PC to record to my MD, but sadly, the stupid soundcard doesn't have an optical out. Can you recommend a cheap soundcard with optical out? Mahal ng sa Creative e.

Kung may murang CD na optical-ready, pa-reco na rin.

How much do you get your MD's for in Japan?

Salamat,

leftman:
sorry ha i'm not that knowledgeable pag dating sa mga pc eh.

yung portable ko less than 1 lapad (na-tsambahan ko yung sale), yung car stereo ko 4 na lapad (nakipagbaratn ako sa akihabara hehehehehe ;D), tapos yung MD deck is 35000 yen

leftman: there are a couple of alternative soundcards that can give you optical outs. zoltrix has one, and it's around 600 pesos (converted from hk$). actually, if you're not that picky, using the analog line outs with an ok cable should produce passable recordings (excuse me while i duck for cover from the hardcore audiophiles)

i've been using the sharp mt831 for almost 2 years. it's the last model before they introduced mdlp, so i just missed it, but i'm not planning to upgrade anytime soon. personally, i think md's are great for their size and portability, but one of the biggest deterring factor for me is the recording time.

unless you have a deck or component that can do high-speed recording, you're stuck with real time (parang back to the good old days of cassette dubbing). nakakatamad minsan magrecord. that, and if you're going on a fairly long trip, there's still the hassle of lugging a lot of discs.

that said, there's still the coolness factor that mds will always have. it probably never went mainstream in manila because it's not mainstream in the US (knowing how hopelessly colonial we still are), plus the cost and lack of availability.

for price reference, 10 packs here average around 330-400 pesos, depending on brand (can go as high as 800 pesos). hope it helps...

To all audio enthusiasts out there:

Have you tried playing dvd as source and record its audio tracks to a minidisc player/recorder?  I tried experimenting on this to my Sony MDS JE330.  Special features on DVDs like the movie's MTV are mostly what I record most.  In doing this, front left and right audio tracks are expected to be recorded since the recording only allows analog recording (sayang!)  During playback, that's where the digital out comes in use

One thing I've noticed though, CD quality sound is not achieved when an MTV audio is recorded in 2.1 format.  But in 5.1, it's a different story.  I was able to borrow a concert dvd (Music for Montserrat - DD and DTS) from a friend and tried to record the audio of the whole disc.  I was surprised to notice the recording is like listening to an audio cd.

Any suggestions kung ano pa ang pwedeng magawa sa MD to maximize it?

i tried recording my Metallica S&M audio tracks to the MD using the optical connection.  just make sure your dvd player has an optical out.

better yet connect the dvd player to an amplifier/receiver (which also has on optical out/in) using the optical connections and adjust the setting of your ampli to your desired effect (mine I used the concert setting) and from your ampli straight to your md recorder.

:)

To Viper:

Music for Montserrat is a good buy in a dvd concert line.  Good dts sound compared to Eagles' Hell Freezes Over and Bee Gees' One Night Only, eh hindi pahuhuli yan.  In my opinion, it even sounded better than the two.  It has the feel of actually being there in the concert.  Try apatmata's suggestion of connection.  Recording directly via optical is very clean and will result to a very good fidelity.

To Apatmata:

Thanks for the suggestion.  My Sony MDS-JE330 MD player/recorder has this limitation: it doesn't record signal coming from my Sony DVP-S560D R1 dvd player using digital in when dvd disc is used as source.  It only accepts analog kaya I have to resolve to RCA jacks when recording.  An error message will appear on the MD when you attemp to record in a digital mode.  When an audio CD is used as source, digital-in is useable.  I think copyright protection software for the DVD is interfering it.

Dazed: Thanks for the sound card suggestions. Now if i could find that brand here, ok na.  ;D

Finally found a way to dub via optical...through my DVD player! Yun lang nga...retro dubbing time ala cassette. Hehehe.

Anyone in Manila can recommend a place to buy low-cost blank MD's? Magkano yung hi-capacity MD's dito?

i also have a portable MD player.  Sony MZR-30 ata yung model.  bought this about 5 years ago.  i hardly use it anymore kasi kakatamad mag-record.  easier pa to save it into mp3 then burn nalang sa CDR.  although sound quality degrades...

has anyone tried copying back audio from MD to PC?  i have some songs kasi that i want to store to my PC.  i copied those a long time ago and di pa uso nun mp3.

thanks!
