What is the proper gauge to use in HT?

The following is a general guide for picking gauges for certain lengths. 

0-25ft - 18AWG
25-50ft - 16AWG
50-75ft - 14AWG
75 & up - 12AWG

Do you follow this guide?

yes that is in order...but nothing stops you from using bigger gauge wires, since most will be undersized anyway...

Yes!  Must also be based on impedance load.  ;)

would this still apply assuming you are using the branded cat-5e type cables for example?

cat-5e have 8 wires, usually 24AWG as per wikipedia.

if i'm not mistaken, using half of these (4 copper strands 24AWG) should be equivalent to 18AWG. using all of them (8 copper strands 24AWG) should yield 15AWG

using 4x runs of cat-5e (2x for POS and 2x for NEG) should be more or less equivalent to 12AWG speaker wire (at least as far as copper strand cross-sectional area is concerned)

^if you have those cat5 cables, you might as well use them....pero kung bibili ka pa, bumile ka na ng tamang cable...marami sa raon.....marming pagpipilian....
