sir levi, i am a proud owner of AMX David 1, an 8 wpc El-34 based ss rectified amp. i already posted some of my observations in my previous posts above. fyi.

i am a builder myself and although my standard is good P2P wiring, it does not guarantee your amp will sound good. i've seen spaghetti wired amps that are excellent sounding. tube amps using properly designed PCBs sound excellent too.

the design has to be technically correct, that's true.

and i know that the dynaco ST-70 was designed for the masses, but how can you make a claim that its circuit topology limits its performance? what proof? i am not an expert in ST-70 or tubes for that matter so please elaborate such a bold claim.

there is nothing mystical, magical in tube amp design. heck, even those invented by western electric since 1930's are still in use today.

i'm not biased on the ST-70 for the record, i don't even own one and i don't plan to own one. you can be a critique of anything as long as your criticisms are substantiated. making baseless claims (until such a reply is posted) such as that is not good.

i scrutinize even my own work, and i'm not ashamed some of them sucks, but most of them are very good, if not excellent. i don't say this amp sounds good because i designed it, or i built it. i'm more critical in my work.

if somebody says the AMX amps sucks, i would still ask the same question. why? what substantiated the claim?

don't get me wrong. it is not about a 'particular' amp i reacted to, rather the claim or the statement that was made.

maybe it is the poster's opinion, and if it is the case, then i don't have a problem with that. opinions are just that, opinions.

i had the opportunity to try out the following at Phasetron yesterday with sir hans adrianne:
1. 6BQ5 amp
2. KT-88 amp
3. EL-34 amp
4. 300B amp

using the following setup:
1. DIY speakers with vintage Corral driver
2. Denon CD Player

given the short warm-up time of less than 30 minutes, my observation are as follows:
1. 6BQ5 amp
this amp didn't quite sing with the above setup. i missed the usual lusciousness of Keiko Lee's voice when we played several tracks from her "Voices" album.

perhaps, it would have sounded better if it is properly warmed up or when paired with a higher sensitivity speaker.

2. KT-88 amp
this amp sounded better than the 6BQ5 in all departments especially when it has warmed up after several tracks. Keiko Lee's "Imagine" is more passionate when played using this amp.

i noticed, though, that the male second voice is more subdued. i would love it to be more forward as it emphasizes the quality of Keiko Lee's voice.

3. EL-34 Amp
i was surprised to hear this amp to sound better than the KT-88. It has a much clearer & better balanced sound. it sounded good on both vocals & instrumental tracks.

we played several tracks from the Starbucks West Coast Jazz album. ganda! it is as if the bands are playing right in front of you.

4. 300B Amp
dito ako saludo. i love the way this amp sounded. ang lambing! wala na akong masabi...

, let me say that the above are purely my personal observations/opinions. i didn't follow any scientific method when i did the audition... i just tried to listen to the same tracks when i went through each of the amps.

i suggest that you visit the shop & request for an audition. i feel that they are worth checking out given their prices.

oks lang naman sa kanila, eh. the people in Phasetron are very accommodating. actually, i enjoyed talking to Mr. Sevilla, the shop owner, as much as listening to the amps.

'yung speakers lang nila ang ginamit namin... balak ko bumalik this weekend, most probably sunday evening, para ma-test 'yung amps with my RB-3.

fyi, yung el-34 na kasama sa taas... secret sana kasi baka sabihin biased ako pero 'yun 'yung david 1.

dinala ko sa Phasetron dahil lumuwag 'yung power knob. 'yun ang naging reference ko n'ung sinubukan ko 'yung ibang amps...

yung 6BQ5, KT-88, at 300B na lang ang nandoroon... the owner told me, though, that they will coming up with several models in the very near future.

ang tagal naman ng christmas bonus...

i believe they do made-to-order amps. go talk to the owner. open siya sa ganitong ideas.

Sir geko,

I'm not good in reviews

but i'll give it a try... wasn't able to bring some cd fortunately Geko have a bunch..

1, 6BQ5 amp - dynamic is ok clear vocal but sound is a little bit slim for my taste Keiko lee voice sounded different mmmh.. parang little girl ang dating (sorry) think it need a very good speaker to match it to give a much warm and body sound.

2. KT-88 amp - better sound than 6BQ5 amp especially after an hour of play agree with Geko now keiko lee voice is now a lady keiko lee

compare the sound nice.

3. David 1 ( Geko amp ) - first I taught yun speaker ang problema But now the coral DIY speaker sings nicely compare to the first 2 amp..

more livelier and vocals are centered even without the toe in instrument are on there respective place.. tapos for the price Geko got it.. Grabe!! PANALO I think better wire will give more justice to that amp tapos ako will paired it with a very good floorstander..

4. 300B - ANG GALING!!! yan ang hinahanap kooooo... but the price naku po... Grabe din..

The owner/builder can make tube to your preference and he mention that he plans to make a hybrid amp soon..

Heard the SV83 tubed 6w AMX amp. Napangiti ako. This time around the the amp's graces blossomed with the diy Coral. Even with poor speaker placement the system delivered palpable imaging and depth. Naroon na yung lambing. This will sound great with my Fostex. Small size, small price, you get much more than value for money.
