How Sony Is Turning into a Ghost in Japan and Around the World
Jake Adelstein and Nathalie-Kyoko Stucky    Nov 14, 2012 4:00 AM
For some people in Japan, Sony is already dead. The only question they have is how did Sony die, or who killed it, and how long will the spectre of Sony remain haunting Japan. It's a pessimistic view of the company but it's one reality in this island country.

Sony, A Dying Brand The Prognosis Is Not Good
By David Richards & BusinessWeek | Tuesday | 13/12/2011
Sony Australia boss Carl Rose has given little if any interview about the performance of his local operation during the past 18 months, and when he has, he has failed to talk about the serious problems Sony is facing.
Back in September 2000 when we were first planning the launch of SmartHouse Sony, was worth $100 billion It is now valued at only $18 billion and slipping.

Sony Slips Further Into The Red, Clings To Dying Handheld Market
Friday, August 03, 2012 - by Joel Hruska
Sony is halfway through an ugly restructuring period as it seeks to cut costs, consolidate markets, and turn its once-mighty television business around. That's a difficult proposition for any company, but the Japanese giant's recent earnings call was gloomy even under these circumstances. Modest upticks in Imaging Products and Services and Pictures were offset by heavy declines in gaming, home entertainment, and music. The company reported a $314M loss for its first quarter of fiscal year 2012 and cut forecasts for a number of markets.

It looks like there won't be any physical disc for 4K content.  It may be distributed through internet downloads.

From AVS Forums:
http://www.avsforum.com/t/1450935/no-plans-for-new-4k-disc-format-sony

With all this 4K talk at CES this year and no one knows where the content will come from, everyone is asking themselves, how will the content be transmitted?

There's been some teasers from Samsung and Netflix but no real details have been announced yet.

After Sony announced plans on "Mastered in 4K Blu-Rays", Sony's CEO Kaz Hirai told The Verge the following:

Quote
A physical format might sound like a good stop-gap, but Kaz doesn’t think 4K distribution will go that way

What about downloads and bandwidth caps from service providers?

Quote
It might seem early for an internet-based 4K distribution platform given that even Sony admits the massive downloads might take days, but Sony does have some experience with 50GB downloads in the realm of PS3 game distribution. When speaking to us today, Kaz called the adaptation to these long download times a “journey” for consumers that will hopefully be eased eventually by fatter internet pipes to the home.

The Real plan for now:

Quote
“I think as the industry evolves 4K, [it] might decide that a disc format might be something that the consumers are looking for,” Kaz admitted to us. “But at this point, before we get into that sort of format, we’re looking for distribution through the network.”

says Hirai.

Assuming materials is at the local player,  kelan mo ba makikita ang difference ng 4K at 1080p with the type if displays we have at home?

Is it a function of the viewing distance + the display size? And significant ba talaga ang difference PQ wise?

Why 4K TVs are stupid
There's all this buzz about 4K resolution. You don't need it, and probably never will.

4K will allow HT-projector size displays under very bright lights - something a projector cannot nicely do.

and 4K will allow you to install really big displays within smaller confines.  You can kiss the monitor if you like.

Significant PQ difference compared with 1080p?  based on the 84" Sony 4K , Yes - from way up close to the maximum distance where PQ is optimum.

Smaller confines?

If I had that much money and a small house, I wouldn't buy a 4K TV and sit up close.

I'd buy a bigger house.   ^-^

Perfect for very rich Japan and Hongkong and Singapore and even in the EU.

Eventually, dapat lang maging affordable sa mainstream ang 4K or 8K or ....K para pati mahihirap with small house can have a 4K TV that is bigger than what they're using right now.

The demo set-up at Bic Ginza of the 84" Sony 4K actually looks very similar to that in terms of distance.

Eh ang lalaki naman kasi ng mga bahay sa US and ng mga PDVD members eh.   ;)  Kaya nga ayon sa isang post na nabasa ko recently in another thread, kapag mayaman ka daw dapat 720p TV.   ;D ;D ;D.  May pag-asa ba talaga Pilipinas kung 720p pa rin isip ng mga tao sa panahong eto?   ;D

Something like this

Iba na ngayon ang 720p plasma e.

Noon Ok lang ang 720p plasma from 10 feet away, or even 6 feet away.

Virgin Media in the UK already sells 100Mbps broadband package so Britons can download a 100GB 4k video in just a 2-3 hours.

You'd be lucky if they serve you coffee while they process your purchase.

If not mistaken, the first plasma TV that went on sale were in the same price range.  Could be more if adjusted for inflation. And it was just 720p.
