when it will be done? i read somewhere sony is considered a dead company

Not yet, it's just bleeding to death. But it still has a lot cash to survive a few more years during which it may still be revived if the PS4 becomes a success.

I heard they're now pushing harder to turnaround their mobile device business, as this is potentially a bigger market than the game console business. They're really envious of Apple's and Samsung's profitability in this segment.

Digital imaging is also one of their recent drives, as Canon and Nikon are showing increased profits in this sphere.

Sony already hinted that 4k source may not be a disc, but via online downloads.

Meron nang 4k videocam from JVC 2011 pa.  $2T lang.
http://www.eoshd.com/content/498/meet-the-prosumer-camcorder-which-is-4k-for-2k

Meron na rin Canon EOS-1D na 4K that debuted last.
http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/04/12/Canon-EOS-1D-C-4K-capable-DSLR

Patay tayo jan sa online download na yan lets say 100GB for 3mbps @ 4days 1080p pa din ako.

LG's 84" UltraHDTV on display at Ansons Makati... yours for a measly P849,990.

Overpriced talaga 'yang si Sony. Eto na lang ang sa akin, LOL

Grabe, ang mahal. Parang bumili na rin ako ng kotse.

You'd be lucky if they serve you coffee while they process your purchase.

If not mistaken, the first plasma TV that went on sale were in the same price range.  Could be more if adjusted for inflation. And it was just 720p.
You are absolutely right! I bought my first 42" Plasma for 140K  (2006)

Kawawa talaga mga Pinoy if that happens with our pathetic broadband speeds.  But not so in the UK where consumers using Virgin Media's 100Mbps package averages 86mbps download speeds, for only the equivalent of less than P3T a month.   Also in Japan, Singapore and S Korea, just to mention a few.

I saw this as well, last night, sa Trinoma. For cash transactions, 600k (whew!) For my eyes, 4k is like the screen of the rMBP (retina macbookpro).

The sales man said that there are only 5 so far who were able to purchase this. The first one? Mr. Hayden Kho last December :)

This is just plain nonsense to me.

1.  20 inch for a tablet is too big to lug around, and too big to fit in a regular business bag...puede sa stroller or bayong.
2.  20 inch is too small for 4K.    Gawin nalang nilang mala Retina Display ang quality ng texts (does that need 4K rez?)

But I wouldnt mind having one for free...and kung mura.

Same same as iTunes eventually.  Ang daming Web DL in P2P  sites which I suppose were originally purchased from iTunes.  Big question is, how can they stream 4K at full bitrate - or even half - or even a quarter?  Right now, iTunes is streaming at around 4000-6000 kbps at 1080p...that's not even a quarter of Full 1080p BD's bitrate.

Baka naman ang ganda pa rin lalabas ng 4K at 4000-6000 kbps? - that would be around 10-16GB in my reckoning.

Yes.  A retina display is supposed to match the ability of the human eye with 20/20 vision to resolve details up close.  And if not mistaken, this involves around 320 ppi (pixels per inch) or pixel density - the true measure of resolution. Some say it should around 440ppi so you can see no pixels even at 1 ft viewing distance.  iPhone 5 only has a 4-inch display with an 1136 x 640 resolution that yields a magnificent 326ppi.  In contrast, a 42-inch TV with 1080p resolution is only around 60ppi.  A 20-inch TV with 1080p has 110ppi.  Ergo, a 20-incher would need to have at least 4k (3820 x 2160) to yield 216ppi, which matches the 220ppi retina display on the 15-inch MacBook Pro.

Formula for ppi is simple it's just the square root of the sum of the squared length and width indicated in a resolution.  Then divide this by the screen size.

1080p movies with file sizes of 10-12GB are already fine.  I can imagine 4k movies at around 20GB to be just as good.

That's what the new Full HD phones are hitting now.

I think it's very possible with HEVC.

Perhaps they'd make the movies available in different bitrates.

Ayun approved na pala ang H.265 standard.  Since half (DAW) the bitrate ng H.264, instead of approx. 4x the size of 1080p, 2x nalang for a 4K encode.   ;)

That would socialize the pricing scheme, if sold at different prices.

It looks like Sony will only make available its Sony Pictures/Columbia Tri-Star catalogue on 4K to purchasers of Sony UHDTVs.  Desperate to boost its dying TV business, Sony will now use its movie making muscle as a competitive tool.

"Asked by reporters if Sony planned to extend the 4K delivery service to TV sets from competitors, Hirai said that might happen eventually, but it would initially be restricted to Sony TVs."

http://news.idg.no/cw/art.cfm?id=1813A7DB-9D0A-EBA2-EBCA2832EA1CCD32

Implication:  If you bought a Panasonic or Samsung UHDTV, you can't watch 4k home video versions of future James Bond iterations, Spider-man, Men In Black, Resident Evil, Underworld, etc.   And since Sony Pictures also has full distribution rights to MGM home video products, you can make a guess.  Now don't ask me how long is "initial."

If not mistaken, of all the CE brands,  only Sony has the affiliate that produces content (movie business).  Will see how this can be leveraged to bring Sony out of junk status.  It can either do so or further alienate its markets.

If Sony prices it's UDTVs way too higher than the competition's, basically strong arming consumers into buying its products, the I say alienate >:(

you can say the same for ipad 3. it worked for a small 9 inch screen. Picture quality of the ipad 3 looks a lot sharper. Ipad 3 resolution is 2,048 by 1,536. Half more then the out going ipad 2 which was 1080p and this is on a 9 inch screen.
the only ussie with pannys pad is battery life.

HDTV's are pricey, as of now. I believe that the number of people willing to procure the same today is still small. Nonetheless, i'm, sure that the prices will go down in 5-7 years.

Hdtvs have never been cheaper than now. Most people are simply contented with crt tvs but once their eyes get opened with HD quality, im sure they would want one. Affordable na lang hdtvs these days
