Simula na naman ang SMC?

Anyway, here's how I see the draft going on November 3:

The 1st 9 picks of the 2013 PBA draft are more or less penciled in ...... some of my two-cents.

** BGK fans should temper their expectations - Greg Slaughter isn't EJ Feihl, but he isn't Marlou Aquino either.

Slaughter will likely struggle within his first season adjusting to the pro game ...... the scientific/rough defenses nowadays, having many ball-centric teammates and his own limitations will make for a rough 1st year.

** Ian Sangalang is best served anywhere but SMC ...... alpha scoring bigs has little place in Tim Cone's triangle offense (moreso with Devance still there).

** RR Garcia ending up with BARAKO is a win-win situation ....... Garcia will become the legitimate lead PG for a ragtag BARAKO team ...... BARAKO ends up with another asset to SELL to its mother SMCorp a few conferences later.

** Terrence Romeo = Hero-Ball = Rajko Toroman going back to Europe

i also have doubts if sangalang will fit tim cone's triangle offense.on the bright side,he is a low post player (something a triangle offense needs).if he can pass the ball well that will be great.if smcm draft's him he will surely spend more time on the bench since he can't practice that much with the team kasi ilang weeks lang umpisa na naman ng conference

Triangle offense will benefit a good passing big man. If Sangalang has it, im sure he will fit well  sa system ni Tim Cone. Pero mahirap pag aralan ang triangle offense kaya mejo d kaagad mababad.

I think Sangalang is the perfect big man for San Mig Coffee. Among the crop of big men in the upcoming draft, he's the most adaptable. He can play alongside more dominant players but he can be the focal point of the offense as well. He doesn't really need the ball to make an impact. He's a great rebounder and a decent enough defender.

there could be a change in either the 4th, 5th or 6th team to pick.

rumors are flying that barako and ginebra are involved in talksfor a trade for, most likely, the sixth pick. either that, or the monfort trade mentioned above.

The claims that Barako is an SMC team will be validated if what's written here is indeed true.

http://www.spin.ph/sports/basketball/news/rajko-toroman-left-in-shock-after-getting-fired-as-barako-bull-consultant-v02

"As news of Toroman's sudden exit spread, sources have told Spin.ph that Leo Austria, coach of San Miguel's ABL team, and Petron manager Siot Tanquingcen are among those being considered for the job.

Another source has confirmed that Koy Banal, one of Gee Abanilla's assistant coaches at Petron, is also set to move to the George Chua-owned ballclub."

And Barako is now officially open for business for the 2013-2014 season.

http://www.spin.ph/sports/basketball/news/source-barako-to-trade-no.-4-pick-to-ginebra-for-abalou-fifth-pick-to-petron-for-subs-v02

You give up getting the likes of Romeo, Forrester, Teng and Garcia for scrubs like Isip and Sison, the oft-injured Ababou who you traded away already and a 32yr old PG in Miranda?

Dapat siguro i-lifestyle check 'tong George Chua at mga Lina. Di naman siguro sila nagbabayad ng tax dun sa kinikita nila sa mga trade na 'to.

Yet more news validating SMCorp's open-secret of owning BARAKO BULL ........

http://www.spin.ph/sports/basketball/news/source-barako-to-trade-no.-4-pick-to-ginebra-for-abalou-fifth-pick-to-petron-for-subs-v02

If this holds true, soooooobrang garapalan for nth time.

** BARAKO to trade 4th pick to BGK for Dylan Ababou
** BARAKO to trade 5th pick to PETRON for ..... wait for it ....... Mark Isip & Magi Sison

Note that Ababou, Isip & Sison were all members of the BARAKO teams just a few conferences ago, before they were dealt to SMCorp teams as part of lopsided trades.

The cycle continues on and on and on and on ........ bravo Comm. Cheato Salud.

....... Me salary cap kaya yun mga SMC teams?

Walang sinusunod na salary cap ang SMCorp teams ...... honestly working under the annual salary cap (IIRC it's 20+M annually), would allow PBA teams only 2-3 players to receive approximately maximum salary.

A team like SMC has stars such as Yap, Pingris, Simon, Devance, Reavis, Maliksi, etc - all known to receive max or near max salaries ....... no way in hell that team management can fit all of these salaries (plus others on the roster) under the cap.

Exactly ..... like I've posted a hundred times here, Tim Cone was a major critic of the way SMCorp operates in the PBA - from their unfair trade practices to their "paid" referees ....  a few times he has even told media that he doubts certain game results when their SMCorp teams play against each other.

Tim Cone blasted SMCorp when BARAKO released then top PG Urbiztondo to the reserved list, then was "conveniently" picked-up by then BMEG.

Of course all of this was before he got employed by SMCorp as SMC head coach. ;)

Since then, he has presided over many lopsided deals e.g. Barocca from BARAKO, Maliksi from BARAKO, Urbiztondo back to BARAKO for a 1st round pick! (how's that for going full-circle), etc ...... not to mention being the beneficiary of referees "help" during many crucial games.

Tim Cone will probably go down as the greatest to ever coach in the PBA ..... if there's a public vote, he'll defintely get my vote.

Tim Cone is the greatest hypocrite in the PBA as well ..... he'll get my vote as well.  ;)

it is really hard to criticize if your eyes are blocked by the peso sign...

rookie draft in a few hours. i think slaughter is going to be the top pick, especially since Sanggalang was officially measured at just 6'6". sabi nga ni Jawo "you can't teach height". But i don't think slaughter, or any of the other bigs in the top three for that matter, will flourish under a coach like ato, who becomes effective only with  players whose potentials have already been tapped. the san miguel team he coached became champions because the players were good...the players made ato a champion coach, and not him making a champion team.

I totally disagree with this. Petron mostly had role players in that team. They went to the finals that conference not because their players were good. It was because TNT chose them.

That Petron team wasn't teeming with stars like the Petron or Ginebra teams now. They had guys like Duncil, Salvacion, Pennisi and Hubalde playing significant minutes. Guys like Yeo, Washington and Al-Hussaini were injured then. Ato made that lineup work against a TNT team laden with stars and coached by Chot Reyes. Not many coaches could have done the same at that time.

Ato is not a bad coach. Yung system niya lang works best when players have their roles set. Something that doesn't work in teams where almost every player is a star and scorer.

Indeed, that PETRON team was more about role-players e.g. Pennisi & Duncil were very valuable during that run ....... partly accidental due to their many injuries that conference.

TnT did choose PETRON (ALASKA and one other team had the same record), partly to blame then was a very flawed quotient system ...... it's a good thing that the PBA board has since implemented the knockout-game rule to break certain ties.

However, TnT also had key people who got injured and/or broke down towards the end of the conference e.g. Reyes, Dillinger, Castro, etc.

Also, a major reason for PETRON winning was the the import Grundy ...... IMO Grundy was one of the best ever from this import height limit (6'5" below). Whatever PETRON needed, he provided (very similar to old SLR import Damien Owens).

Ato Agustin is old-school coaching. He's not part of that long outdated Ron Jacobs-fraternity of coaches. However, Ato is still evolving as a PBA coach ...... the main knock on him has been his tendency to always rely on a short rotation.

Tim Cone also works on a short rotation - but the difference is Tim Cone has his team always sharing and moving the ball via his triangle offense ....... BGK on the other hand, has more than a few ball-centric/hogging players e.g. Caguioa, Tenorio, Helterbrand, etc.

=============================================================================

It's another PBA draft day today ...... where the ultra-elite teams get stronger and their farm-teams get richer.

Manood para makita ang harap-harapang garapalan na gagawin nang SMCorp and Bert Lina-teams.

1st Round

[Ginebra] Greg Slaughter
[San Mig] Ian Sangalang
[RoS] Raymond Almazan
[Ginebra] James Forrester (to Ginebra from Barako for Maeirhofer/Wilson)
[Global] Terrence Romeo (to Petron from Barako for Sison/Isip then from Petron to Global for Taha)
[Global] RR Garcia (to Global from Barako for Denok Miranda)
[Global] Isaac Holstein
[Alaska] Ryan Buenafe
[RoS] Alex Nuyles
[San Mig] Justin Chua

2nd Round

[Global] Nico Salva
[RoS] Jeric Teng
[San Mig] Justin Melton
[Barako] Jeric Fortuna
[TNT] JP Erram (to TNT from Alaska)
[Air21] Eric Camson
[TNT] Robby Celiz
[Alaska] Chris Exciminiano
[RoS] Gayford Rodriguez
[Barako] Carlo Lastimosa

*Romeo, Garcia and Salva in one team. That's going to be interesting.
*Surprised that Teng dropped to the 2nd round. But still good that he went to RoS.
*RoS getting quality picks without going through lopsided trades. Dami na rin nilang Chinese.

3rd Round (not televised)

[Air21] Joshua Webb
[Global] Jopher Custodio
[Barako] Darwin Cordero
[Global] LA Revilla (this pick & Ginebra's 2016 & 2017 2nd rd for Global's 2014 1st rd))
[Petron] Sam Marata
[Meralco] Anjo Caram
[TNT] Eliud Poligrates
[Alaska] Raymund Ilagan
[RoS] Ervic Vijandre
[San Mig] JR Cawaling

4th Round (not televised)

[Global] --Pass--
[Air21] Angelo Ingco
[Barako] Jett Vidal
[Ginebra] John Usita
[Petron] Nate Matute
[Meralco] Mark Parala
[TNT] Chris Sumalinog
[Alaska] --Pass--
[RoS] --Pass--
[San Mig] --Pass--

*That 3rd round Ginebra-Global trade could be interesting. If Global still performs badly this season, Ginebra has a shot at another lottery pick.

** Right on cue, Bert Lina starts his annual PBA draft firesale ...... getting Maierhoffer/Wilson/Sison/Isip/Miranda in exchange for 3 future franchise players.

What's always overlooked in every lopsided trade, BARAKO is taking in more salary (a cumulative amount of more than 1M/month) in exchange for prime rookies whose total 1st year salary would just be around 400k/month ....... sino ba ang nagpapatakbo sa BARAKO BULL?  ;)

** Literally a big surprise that ALASKA picked Buenafe ..... first off, they're shallow at SG. They've long needed a prime reliever for Baguio and a guy like Nuyles (or Teng) would have been the much better choice.

I like Buenafe for his IQ and his uncanny knack for hitting big shots and making the big plays ...... but that was all in the amateurs. Slow and plump is a bad combo in the PBA.

In many ways, a guy like Ken Bono had a better amateur career (awards, stats, etc) than Buenafe ...... look how that turned out for Bono.

I'm rooting for Buenafe (and ALASKA), but that conditioning is likely to bug him in his pro career.

** ROS with yet another great haul in the PBA draft ...... ROS already picked Almazan to add to an already quality frontline. Taking both Nuyles & Teng with late picks makes for a great night.

** BGK can draft or buy all the primetime rookies that they want ....... as long as (still) Mark Caguioa has the offensive reins, a championship will still likely elude them.
