MANILA, Philippines -- The first trailer for the restored high-definition version of the Ishmael Bernal classic "Himala" has been released.

Released online Wednesday via ABS-CBN's official page on video-sharing site YouTube, the first trailer of "Himala" gives an extended look at the 1982 film in restored high-definition quality.

Filipino audiences can now relive the story of Elsa (Nora Aunor), a barrio lass whose visions of the Virgin Mary changes her life and her community, once it hits selected cinemas nationwide on December 5, 2012.

The restored version of "Himala" was first screened at the 2012 Venice International Film Festival in September. But a long history of international recognition for the film preceded the Italian showing.

Notably, it was recognized as a contender for the prestigious Golden Bear Award at the 1983 Berlin International Film Festival. It also won the Bronze Hugo Prize at the Chicago International Film Festival in the same year; and in 2008, was hailed as the Best Asia-Pacific Film Of All Time by the CNN and Asia Pacific Screen Awards.

Written by Ricky Lee, "Himala" is the first film to be restored in HD quality by the ABS-CBN Restoration Project, in partnership with Central Digital Lab, Inc.

According to Leo Katigbak, head of ABS-CBN Film Archives, other films that will be restored in HD quality are: Peque Gallaga's “Oro, Plata, Mata”, and a number of Star Cinema films including Olivia Lamasan’s “Maalaala Mo Kaya” and “Madrasta”; Laurice Guillen’s “Tanging Yaman”; Rory Quintos’ “Anak”; Marilou Diaz-Abaya’s “Bagong Buwan”; and Chito Roño’s “Dekada ’70.”

I really hope they consider restoring a lot more. I'd like to see Itim, Kakabakaba ka ba, Kisapmata, and Sister Stella L.

Pasensya na kung biased yung list. :-)

And btw, I hope the restoration is done conscientiously.  I've seen overzalous restorations where the result becomes somewhat artificial in look.  I hope they consult the original filmmakers whenever possible.

Shangrila Cinema or Robinson's Galleria Cinema, i'll confirm soon. Its the opening film of Cinema One Origs.

Just like in the 20th Anniv., cast and crew have been invited to grace the occasion. How time flies..I still remember Jessica Zafra mounting the 20th Anniv. of ORO PLATA MATA.....we can now see soon the hd restored version in full glory!

I read something online that the Criterion Collection was considering adding MAYNILA to their roster of films but it was rejected due to the quality of the prints. Perhaps they might change their minds after this!

Hey Dan you should not miss the preem on Nov. 28, no more burn out print since its in full hd na! Caught the technical preview this morning at Power Plant Mall Rockwell Cinema 2. Its fantastic, beautiful and marvelous!

Central Digital Lab found the original negatives with the original audio. All the sounds are intact from the original release and the picture quality is truly a sight to behold! Direk PQ was very happy with the restoration effort.

No announcement yet for the release date on video. Leo Katigbak said this morning they are eyeing for Jan or Feb theatrical release of OPM. And hoping for R-16 rating from the MTRCB. Ang dami sound na namiss from the dvd release!

This is ORO PLATA MATA as you've never seen or heard before!

Yeah, and I just recently discovered na hindi anamorphic yung OPM -- a couple of months ago, actually.

Ano yung nawawalang sound na sinasabi mo? Dialog or effects?

Most audio sa forest or during the MATA section ang nawala plus during the love scene of Cherie Gil & Ronnie Lazaro, there's a background music coming from the long playing record of Manny Ojeda....they even corrected the framing.

Just saw the Himala HD trailer. To be honest, and I don't want to offend anyone, the film looks a million times better than any contemporary Pinoy film I've seen. It was as if it was made only yesterday.

Sorry, I'm just blown away at the possibility that our film heritage has a shot at being saved finally.

I hope not only the pic quality gets restored, but the audio as well.
hoping some if not all Old black n white movies gets digitally restored as well.

I bought an original DVD of Ang Tatay Kong Nanay thinking it was restored clearly, but it's a disappointing purchase.  That stopped me from buying further old Filipino classic films.

I do hope that it starts a trend. Although the next batch of starcinema restorations are quite a disappointment.

Yeah, although mga current local movies, pangit pa rin audio until now.
