Raspberry Pi
« on: Dec 10, 2012 at 05:25 AM »

Noticed that a thread about this has not been created yet.  :)

I've seen a couple of NAS builds which doubled as an HTPC.  I have yet to see a purely HTPC build in the Philippines, though.

OpenElec might be a place to start and there may be others who've forked or built a similar/better solution.

If you have a Raspberry Pi build, please feel free to post it on this thread!  ^-^

^ That's great! Where did you buy the unit? Is it rev b already? My brother mentioned that there's a distributor here but I just can't remember who/where. I'm planning to build one as well. :D

pa update naman once you get this project going. I've read a lot of good reviews over the net but none from PH users. This is a very cheap alternative.

Yes, it is very cheap.
When you buy the unit, no more assembly needed. You just need to install OpenElec to an SD card (2GB min). Connect HDMI and plug it in. Then It fires up your XBMC. With all the addons enabled!

The video streaming of 1080p movies from Navi-X was fast and clear.
It also streams 3D movies on IceFilms.

My Pi also serves as a media center for the files I have downloaded. It has 2 USB ports to connect independent powered external HD's

Video and audio output on the Raspberry Pi
Shortcut: #Output

Video output via HDMI up to 1080P (the GUI will be rendered at 720P, but video will play up to 1080P).
Video output via the analog component video (RCA) jack will be in SD.
Analog audio output via the mini phone jack is supported.
USB audio is currently not supported.
DTS and AC3 audio passthrough audio is supported (and recommended, as it will reduce CPU load on the R-Pi)

Supported digital video resolutions are: 640 × 350 EGA; 640 × 480 VGA; 800 × 600 SVGA; 1024 × 768 XGA; 1280×720 720p HDTV; 1280 × 768 WXGA Variant; 1280 × 800 WXGA Variant; 1280 × 1024 SXGA; 1366 × 768 WXGA Variant; 1400 × 1050 SXGA+; 1600 × 1200 UXGA; 1680 × 1050 WXGA+; 1920 × 1080 1080p HDTV; 1920 × 1200 WUXGA.[77] Also to be supported are the generation of 576i and 480i composite video signals for PAL-BGHID, PAL-M, PAL-N, NTSC and NTSC-J[89]

And so far all kinds of files I throw at it.. it delivers good!

But of course it is limited with the video files available out there.

It delivers good how big is the file and the video bitrate? Like 1080p bluray iso 40gb or 1080p 30gb and so on? HD audio or DTS?

Dapat i-merge na lang ng mods ito sa thread mo JojoD818.

Sa states this RaspberryPi is applicable because of the price but here there are lots of alternatives cheaper than this (wtih casing pa). Maganda lang dito you can easily modify it to your liking.

As a media player the kaiboer K3 for example is more practical , but as a squeezebox client or even as a server . This is really cost effective.

Will get a chance to get this from Element14. Sasabay lang sa paguwi ng sister ko from Sydney this October.
Planning to buy 2. One will function as a torrent downloader and the other one as an XBMC Media Player.
Beginner here. Just wanted to know of anyone else's experience with these Raspberry's.

I have 2 Raspberry Pi's as satellite XBMC clients running OpenElec 4 (XBMC Gotham) - one in the bedroom and one in the living room. They're connected to a media server (also hosting the central XBMC mySQL DB) via wireless LAN. Depending on the XBMC skin, GUI navigation may not be as buttery smooth as my main HTPC (a more powerful Intel NUC) but you can overclock it to have a more fluid navigation. You have an option to control XBMC via smartphone or tablet so it's not really a deal breaker IMHO. Another nice thing about the Pi/OpenElec is that it supports CEC via HDMI. You can control XBMC using just the TV's remote control (increases WAF hehe). In terms of video playback, it has no problems playing all my media :)

If you're into HTPC and XBMC, this little device is such a great addition to your system ;D

I've almost got the same setup as yours, mav14. I'm also using CEC via HDMI coupled with Keymap Editor to further customize the remote, albeit limited. CEC is convenient since you won't need extra hardware (remote/IR), but there's a bit of response lag compared to an external IR/remote setup. I got a cheap IR/remote and it works great too. Openelec feels a lot snappier. :-)

A few tips for new RPi users:

1. Make sure you're supplying adequate power to your Pi. Power supplies rated at 5VDC 1.5A to 2A are best. And make sure your Micro USB cable is thick enough and able to handle 2A+ currents. This is the usual bottleneck that's often overlooked. B+ models feature a brown-out detector and the red power LED flickers if not enough current is supplied to the Pi. This should be a steady red light.

2. Use a powered USB hub when connecting USB devices requiring high current draws (i.e., external USB hard disks, etc.). No need for this if you're only using a wifi adapter, keyboard, mouse, flash drives, other low power devices, or external drives/devices with their own power supplies. The B+ normally allows 600mA total, but can be set to 1.2A with a bit of hacking/tweaking.

3. I found cheap USB wifi adapters (PHP 300+) from CDRKING that work well (better than Edimax, etc.). You can also use antennas with higher dBi ratings with these wifi adapters. This is great if your house/location is big or spans 2 or 3 floors.

question lang po sa xbmc users with rpi, if using a dedicated htpc with xbmc is 10/10, how would you rate the rpi? rate should not include power consumption

and has anyone tried navi-x addon on rpi with xbmc? how's the streaming?

Never had an htpc so I cant compare. Always opted for media players and this New toy, the Raspberry. I would rate it at 9/10. I would be taking into consideration the added uses of an HTPC. For a new user like me The Raspberry is limited to one OS at a time unless you swap memory cards. The hardware used in HTPC's are more powerful and has a wider range of use. However, the feeling of consuming very little power in a small form factor is very welcoming.
