« on: Jan 27, 2013 at 10:44 AM »
Im planning to build a budget audiophile system in my bedroom and im planning to purchase a SACD player. i would like to solicit your opinion on which is the practical way of buying SACD player?

Buy a devoted CD/SACD player or Buy DVD Blu ray player with SACD playback features?

any opinions?

is there really a huge difference between CD/SACD and Blu Ray/SACD?

But this is what im planning to buy for the speakers and sub since medyo maliita lang ang room ko:

NHT superzero 2.0

paired with NHT super 8 powered sub

im still thinking about the amp at the moment, im planning to have a cheap tube amp siguro.

If 2ndhand sacd/dvd player fine with you . mag abang ka lang sa marketplace . paminsan minsan you can get highend pioneer or sony players at the price range range of 6k to 10k . these are old players but nevertheless if music matters most to you they are bang for the buck..

None, especially if you're using their digital out.

Very nice choice on the Now Hear This speakers however I don't think pairing them with a "cheap tube amp" is the way to go but in hindsight your definition of cheap might be an Audio Research model so take my advice with a grain of salt.

BTW...why SACD? Do you have a lot of material encoded in that format?

what i mean is like "pre-owned" tube amp. Why SACD? because i want the best possible audiophile quality sound. i know that SACD is hard to find here in PI but everything could source out under the web :)

Sir synchro, how much is the price ng audio research amp na 2nd hand? any model in particular?

Ill try to answer your query without veering away that much from the topic itself which is SACD. Since you mentioned that everything can and may be sourced out from the web try to visit Audiogon for a quality pre owned Audio Research tube amp. A good tube preamp and tube amp combo from AR would set you back probably in the vicinity of $8K and up. If you go monoblocks then the entry fee goes a lot higher but mind you whatever route you take with the AR you will use that for decades...ganun katibay yun AND ganun kaganda tumunog yun (assuming you get the other ancillaries right). If you want a bidget AR set up then go for their non tube solid state line. Lots of SACD players there as well that are pre owned.
I got some of my gear in Audiogon because their prices are very good as compared here.

If you want to go brand new then pay a visit to Lito Gelano. He is the official dealer of Audio Research in the Philippines. You may also be able to source out a good pre owned AR or an SACD player through PDVD member Edwin from Singapore. If you go AR then you have to up the ante for the speakers as well IMHO but that's another story or rather topic altogether......one brand comes to mind and that is Sonus Faber.

Good luck

The difference between a CD & SACD is really hard to tell. Get a very good CD Player instead and invest good cables. If you want the best possible sound, go vinyl..

Well-made SACDs are fairly distinguishable from CDs in the right system, imo. The sad part is that a lot of SACDs are poorly made, and that does not give justice to the capability of the format.

I do not know of any Oppo player that handles DSD natively through its internal DAC. They convert DSD streams to 24/88.2 PCM internally. The only way to get native DSD out of these players is to bitstream DSD through HDMI (and very few HDMI receivers actually handle DSD natively, most also do PCM conversion).

Though the conversion would likely be of good quality, DSD purists like Timber715 and some other members may not be happy with that.

If you plan to go tube, mag LP ka na lang,

No point going SACD if you don't have transparent and neutral sound system.

Also consider getting a DAC capable of playing hi-def 24bit audio. There are plenty of albums available online.

I rather buy a pre-owned Sony SCD-1 SACD Player if you are seriously want to hear SACD's. Not just a good SACD player but also a good CD player.

How easy or hard is it to buy SACD discs? Locally, I only know of Fully Booked at Serendra as a source. Frootloops also sells some 2nd hand discs. Abroad, even Amazon has very few titles and many are very expensive. I have several SACD titles, most of which are multi-channel because that's what I prefer, and I'm happy with them but the fact is that it's a dying breed.

Mabuti pa LP, pati Astrovision meron nang titles. LP's are very much alive, not so SACD and DVD-Audio.
No room acoustic treatment is like running a Ferrari on ice.

I  haven't tried them, but SACD Store supposedly has a pretty big collection.

Pure Audio Bluray is also suffering from the same lack of traction. That's less market for 82kg BDPs like the one below:

I've read somewhere, not sure if it's here. that older PS3s can actually play sacds. I've got a fat model which my daughter uses but haven't tried it yet.

Yes, the earlier PS3s can play SACDs. They do not handle DSD natively however (they do DSD to PCM conversion).

Tried it with my daughter's PS3 and it wouldn't recognize the disc. I think it should be the first version the one which has a backwards compatibility with PS2.

There are losses in conversion. You lose the biggest selling point of DSD if you convert to PCM. Most modern ADCs and DACs are delta-sigma types, and using DSD from start to finish with these components can result in the purest digital data path from recording to reproduction.

PCM conversion isn't bad, and many record companies actually do this during processing. Most PCM material actually came from a PDM source, and will revert back to PDM form during playback. Data do get lost in each layer of conversion, but the losses can be minimized with careful planning and the right hardware.

Digital files converted to dsd often starts from pcm, but converting from vinyl, master tape or other analogue sources start analogue and not pcm. Here is where dsd benefits most. Like stagea said, it is actually crazy to make a dsd file from a digital file that starts from a pcm file.
