was also at Abensons yesterday, dami ng 4K na less than 100k ... napansin ko lang nawala na mga OLED, at yung mga curved models mas makapal sa flat LED ... have they stopped developing OLED? or wala lang dito sa atin ... i was expecting na boom na yung technology this year

I think it's because of the price. OLED is priced waaay out of reach of most consumers.  :-\

I think it's because of the price. OLED is priced waaay out of reach of most consumers.  :-\

Plus the fact that despite the high price, LG and Samsung are losing money on OLED TV sales. Manufacturing cost is still very high at this point (partly because of BOM, and partly because of low yields). The makers won't push a product that they don't make money from. The high initial investment and development costs are apparently what stopped Panasonic and Sony from dipping their hands into an OLED joint venture.

If their fabs progress as expected, LG is projecting that they can start to break even on this product by the latter part of this year (I doubt Samsung would be behind on this). LG and Samsung are in such tough competition to get this product to the market that they are suspecting that corporate espionage is happening. Once the tech becomes truly profitable, the panel makers will surely ramp production and start pushing them to the shelves. Once they reach this point, they will start milking the technology with sustained premium pricing to pay for the original investment until other producers get the capability to deliver competing products.

Right now the 4 big panel makers are:
1. LG Display (Korea)
2. Samsung (Korea)
3. Innolux Corp. (Taiwan) - formerly ChiMei
4. AU Optronics (Taiwan) - formerly Acer Display

Most TV makers just source from these 4 panel makers. The largest Japanese panel maker (Sharp) is now a small niche player when compared to the market shares of the top 4.

The Taiwanese panel makers (Innolux and AUO) are closing the gap in terms of LCD performance, but they they may take some time to bring the fight to OLED (based on the time they took to develop their LCD tech).

Guys,

Any thoughts on LG 42UB820T? Is it worth the plunge or should I get a FHD TV instead for the price?

Thanks!

Thanks! What about HD cable TV box content? Would it still look good on a 4k screen? Like Sky Cable's HD channels?

4K TV owners, I'm curious, I noticed that 4K TV brands are advertising upscaling effect.

Does it mean that even though you are playing a 1080p content, screen quality is better than a regular HDTV?

Im down to these three:

l
LG 65UB980
SAMSUNG 65HU8500
SONY 65X850B

yung lg top of the line. While samsung and sony is one step down.

LG and Samsung pareho ng price. Sony is 20k more expensive per sir vic's price in olx. If magdecide ako sa sony. Baka maghaggle ako kay sir vic to remove the free ps4 para pareho na sila ng price.

Curiously, parang downgraded yung version ng sammy compared to UE version or I might be looking at a diff model.

Notable yung pagkawala ng camera and ome connect box pwr sm appl. Will check ansons na lang to recon.

Master Louie, I have not seen them locally. I have not been checking though baka meron naman (kung wala sa local distributor, baka grey units meron).

They have three lines in that size for 2015:
Beyond 4K (Flagship) - THX 4K Cert, Quattron+ Panel
Aquos UH30 (High End) - THX 4K Cert, Wide Gamut RGB Panel
Aquos UE30 (Mid Level) - Mainstream Large Panel 4K

Prior 70" 4K models were from the UD27 (2014) and UD1 (2013) lines.

Sobra ganda ng PQ ng OLED ng LG. Ang itim ng blacks sobra. Sana mag mura na sya agad. Ito lang kasing ganda ng plasma.

Sobra ganda ng PQ ng OLED ng LG. Ang itim ng blacks sobra. Sana mag mura na sya agad. Ito lang kasing ganda ng plasma.

OLED is well beyond Plasma in contrast ratio and color gamut. The technology is being limited by the source material available, however. Currently available materials were designed for less capable display technologies (Rec.709 color space).

Only OLED panels are capable of reproducing the Rec.2020 color space faithfully at this moment. They are trying to further develop Laser and LED projectors and Quantum Dot LCD panels to get there however (as cheaper options to OLED).

HDR, Rec.2020 and Deep Color are now supported by the UHD Bluray standard. If film production companies utilize these properly, OLED will start showing its true capability. I think most will take some time to do so however, as most theaters cannot display that level of image quality (nor would the production companies have the equipment to fully maximize these technologies). Dolby Vision (one of the HDR specs) contrast ratio is 10x that of the best plasma TV measured. Netflix is readying HDR UHD material ahead of UHD Blurays. This should look awesome on HDR displays (I hope they start adopting Rec.2020 and Deep Color as well).

Color space improvement:

As you can see, Rec.2020 covers a wider range of what humans can perceive (the colored shape is the extent of human color vision). This allows for a more realistic image. With display technology improvements, they are getting closer to a "glass window" when it comes to image quality.

On the LCD end, QD backlighting on LG's and Samsung's flagship LCD panels are allowing wider color gamuts and greater contrast ratios.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z7aqJpKfPC0

The Taiwanese makers should not have much difficulty following this route (manufacturing these would not be as intricate or as costly as OLED manufacturing).

The new 2015 LG UF7600 series....Quantum Dots technology na kaya? It says in the article..."Color Prime Technology"...is it same as the quantum dots tech?   Looks like Samsung and LG are really hell bent on outdoing each other...am kinda incline sa LG..ang ganda tlaga.
