Just to share with you some first hand experience from a batchmate ( ex PBA player ) who got to train with the San Antonio Spurs camp ( for coaching ) less than a decade ago.  Eto mga kwento nya which he personally witnessed while training with the Spurs :

1)  Coach Pop got pissed off with Tim Duncan for not following directions and sent him home in one of their practices.

2)  Fresh from his Lakers stint, Robert Horry was admonished by Coach Pop for sitting down during a practice session and was made to run around the court the whole time the team was scrimmaging.  Bawal pala umupo pag practice at hindi sinasabi ni Coach Pop.  Coach Pop is a disciplinarian indeed.

3)  One of the main requirements to be part of the San Antonio Spurs team is a HIGH IQ in basketball.  So all the players you see in their team may not be immensely skilled players but you can bet that they are all intelligent players.

4)  The basketball system that Coach Pop is using now is still the same system that they are using 10 years ago or maybe farther back.  My friend said it's highly complicated.  "Hindi pwede sa PBA dito masyado kumplikado." It just so happened that ngayong finals lang talaga pumutok ng maganda yun sistema but they have been trying to perfect that ever since.  Bad news for the Heat indeed!

5)  Spurs management didn't initially like Tony Parker. They were having second thoughts in getting him then as they were keen in getting Jason Kidd, another player with high IQ in basketball.  Coach Pop was the one who lobbied for Parker and told management to give him a chance.  Good decision as it turned out.

Interesting.  No wonder Spurs is really a solid, well managed and very efficient franchise.  Deserving to be the new NBA champs and their 5th..

^ Very nice

With movement that crisp and passing that sharp it was not a wonder that it took them years to perfect.  I wouldn't be surprised if it took PhilJax and Tex Winter that long to establish the triangle offense with the bulls too.

Parker was already on the Spurs roster though.  I remember that because the Spurs were trying to recruit the person they just defeated in the finals.  This was in 2003.  Parker was drafted 2001.  He was still on his rookie contract when San Antonio was wooing Kidd.  If it pushed through, Parker would have been the main back up.

The triangle offense wont win games unless you have the talent ...... it only worked well with the Bulls, because they had the right fit of players (something which GM Jerry Krause was hugely uncredited for).

The Bulls also had the single greatest play in the entire history of basketball ....... "Give the ball to Michael".

Hahaha! That's right!  If the play fails... MJ on iso na.  I remember another famous Jackson line... "Don't leave Michael alone.  It's not time yet!"

I also like the Steve Kerr line... "If you get doubled, pass it to me.  I'll be ready!"  And Kerr surely was.  :D

Like I've posted more than a few times in these threads, all of the other Phil Jackson assistant coaches have used the triangle offense - all of them failed miserably and won very few games.

Not a single one of Jackson's many so-called disciples, won anything significant in the NBA ...... it's no coincidence that they didn't have players named Kobe & Michael.

The triangle offense is a decent ball-sharing system which a team can use to compete ...... however, it takes great talent to win in the NBA.

IMO the PBA's Tim Cone uses the most advanced form of triangle offense in the planet - yet he only sporadically won during the post-Abbarientos years ....... he only began winning big again, when he jumped ship to the ultra-loaded SAN MIG Team.

I believe Jackson know that as well.  That's why he was always accused of only coaching ready made teams.  The 2005 and 2006 seasons did prove you need great talent to successfully implement the triangle.
