IMHO, For me FS or a big bookshelf  with Subwoofer :) There is only a handful of FS that can go down to 20 hz and those that do are frikkin $$$$$$$.  Most FS that I have heard rarely goes down to 30 hz, even 35 hz is not common, even if they do go down to 30 hz on its technical spec, they can not do this with the required SPL (depending on the listeners volume preference and type of music). An FS with a 8 inch woofer can only do so much bass compared to a 12 or 15 inch subwoofer

* Even today, 8 inch woofers is seldom seen in FS speakers, so expect less bass with a 7 or 6.5  inch woofers and its smaller brothers.

Once you have heard a properly setup 2.1 channel with BS or a FS for that matter, you would never go back to 2.0

I agree with you. Maraming nawawala kung mag-start mag-roll off sa 50-hz region and speakers.

Very true. Without the aid of a very good sub that is integrated thoughtfully in the system you will lose a whole lot of the 3D simulation, spatial cues and ambience. A good sub not only extends the frequency capability of the system..it brings to the table a lot more than that.

for audio? a pair of 4 ft tall MTMW FS and two 4 ft3 subs is enough for me.

I like the bottom end sound of Wharfedale speakers, although it lacks the detailed sound for critical listening.
If you already have the 9 or 10-series Wharfedale speakers, I recommend you have Anthony Lueterio tweak the speakers and you will get the detailed sound.
I was very impressed also with the Wharfedale 121 BS... this model does not need tweaking but needs a good amplifier with lots of power to sing very well.

thanks mga bossing for the replies much appreciated. now im confused with intergrated amps and avr's..research research muna ko dito boards

Integrated amp basically means the preamp and power amp section is "integrated" into 1 package. Whereas, AVR = Audio Video Receiver, can also be an integrated amp, except they have the ability to accept video signals.

I just added  a sub to my 2.0 setup to be able to listen first hand the diff between with or without a sub and yes it makes a big difference...you can hear and feel the low freq and it gives more life and weight whatever you call it to any genre you would listen to but yes you will have to blend the sub to your main and therefore you must excert some effort in tweaking the bass management knobs on the sub until you get it right not to mention the position/location of the sub coz it really have a major impact in filling the room with bass..for a start I got a vintage dynaquest 12".got it cheap but sounds good..just sharing :-)

Congrats sir. proper integration is the key.

Heed the words of Master Nelson. A sub in a music system used to augment a bookshelf or floor stander  can be utilized as a weapon for mass destruction however its best to be used as a scalpel with utmost precision.

When the musical material doesn't call for it the sub must be "invisible"

sakli  :)

in my experience, the only time I enjoy (most) listening w/o a sub is when i'm close to the speakers (2-3ft).

^ or power amp & pre-amp combo OR tube amp  ;)

for audio I like listening to 2.0 setup, was never a fan of subs for pure audio. for HT a sub plays a big role.

Me din left/right channel lang powered by a-50T. Di masyadong hilig yung bassy. more ako sa clarity

in my case, I am happy with the amount of bass that is coming out of my floorstanders.  the two pairs have 7" woofers and when played with trance and Bass Beat Sound really shakes the hanging wooden carvings against the wall.  anything more baka ipa-baranggay na ako ng neighbor, townhouse kasi.

he he he he.   :)
