I have have now done a proper calibration using all 8 mic positions & the difference is like night & day compared to the 1st calibration where I only used 3 positions. It'll teach me to read all the literature 1st instead of relying on what I've already experienced. The sub seems a bit lacking in volume but will assess the situation once I have watched films with known low end content.

There's always the xover cutoff option from the receiver and the subwoofer gain to compensate for our preferences. You're right. When it comes to movies, there's nothing like a good low end.

Your right Nelson, I've got to do a little experimenting. I will probably use Terminator Salvation for my testing as that has good reference sound.

Usually using the mic calibration the sub lacks the output based on our preference. I usually add +6 to the output level of the sub after calibration.

I've always done that in the past doc. but having done a little reading about Audyssey & the reasons why the sub output may appear to be low I thought I'd wait until I'd listened to a known reference before tweaking it.

A toss between REFERENCE and PREFERENCE.

The question is how do you define reference. Hehe!

As doc surmised it's more preference but there are films that the critics class as reference quality audio & having played Terminator Salvation a few times I'll agree with them on that title  ;) >:D

At the end of the day you will be the one watching and listening. Do the Audyssey calibration for reference or starting point then adjust accordingly to your preference. Lucky after the calibration it already suits your taste.

Case in point, I find the center speaker lacking after calibration so I added 2 more clicks to suit my needs. A also added +4 to my sub levels after calibration. Others are untouched.  That's just me though.

Nothing beats manual calibration whether at 70db or 80db.

Manual calibration is ok for your sweet spot using an SPL meter but using Audyssey is better for large theater rooms with more than one row of seats.

I haven't tried comparing the 2 methods though if it will come up with the same results.

For larger home theatre rooms I toy around with the time delay or speaker distance for manual calibration.

As you say doc I'm the only one the calibration has to please & in the past I've always lifted the sub but never had to alter the center. The difference is I'm now in a dedicated HT room so conditions are not quite the same. I will probably end up lifting the center & sub but for the time being I'll leave it as it is so I can get used to the sound before I start tweaking. At the moment all my spare time is being taken up completing the house build. After 2 & a half years & precious little having been done from the punch list I'm slowly sorting it all out & hopefully by the end of the year all outstanding work will be complete. Then I will have time to tweak to my hearts content but at the moment it's watching a film or 2 with the family straight after evening meal & then off to bed.

For me it is. Its also basically what the auto calibration will probably do, including additional  tweaks sa EQ.

Hi guys,
I can't believe that my sabatical from the forum has been just over 2 years, time flies when you're having fun or not. I had to put everything on hold to complete the house, it has been a long haul & still not going to be completed for at least 6 months but that's another story.
I've done a little in the theater, finally got the aircon covered but the LED lighting along the front has failed, I think maybe the psu but it will have to wait until I can get to it.
My server is now up & running with all my CD's archived & slowly going through my DVD's. Found a few with what is commonly known as disc rot but not much of a problem caused.
A bit angry with the way Photobucket tried to basically blackmail users into buying storage plans. Me being me would rather pay extra somewhere else than deal with them so have downloaded all my pics & will re post them. I had a bit of a problem where all the pics I posted in this thread disappeared, having built a highish end gaming PC things went missing when I did the transfer. All seems to be OK now so business as usual from now on & once I've sorted out the pics will be a more frequent visitor to the forum.

Hi Nelson, yes it's me, almost a blast from the past.
Still trying to make time to get to the forum as well as a lot of other things.
Wifey decided she wanted the front garden completely redone so in the middle of that now.
Away to Boracay for a 3 day rest tomorrow so hopefully will have some time when we get back.

Hopefully all the pics will be reposted over the next few weeks. Uploaded the 1st 31, there's just under 400 to do, re posted 4 pics in reply 246 so now I know what I'm doing. Once I've got the old pics re posted I'll give an update to the current situation.

Hi guys, I was doing so well, got up to page 17 re posting photo's but it would appear that some of the pics I downloaded from Photobucket are missing, lost in cyberspace I presume. Checked my old PC, now the wife's & it would appear that the ones I want are still there. In attempting to transfer between PCs the wife's failed with a 'bad system config info' error. I tried all the suggestions I could find to no avail so was thinking of one of the hard drives failing. Fitted them to my PC 1 at a time & decided to do what I should have done a long time ago, transferred all the photos & music. Unfortunately as most of the pics were recovered from a previously erased drive they have lost their original names so a lot of sorting to do. The wife's PC is now up & running, I wan't bore you with the details but how I didn't tear my hair out I don't know. Now after a week I can start re posting & should be finished in a few days.
Then I'll be be able to update this thread.

Update :- 1st update was get the network sorted so I could put the NAS into use. The 5 port HT switch was moved to the HT room, router & 8 port gigabit switch moved to our bedroom then installed an Asus RT-AC88U in the control room. Things were getting a little complicated so decided that was the best way to go.

On top, Globe LTE modem, 1st shelf, netgear firewall, 2nd shelf RT-AC88U, bottom CCTV & printer.
Apologies for the pic being lop sided, I took it 4 times, looked OK in the viewfinder so either the camera has a problem or it's my eyes.
