Sony's in a 'bag of hurt' because of Blu-ray
Sony cuts earnings estimates as disc market shrinks faster than expected
By Aaron Souppourison
May 1, 2014 03:31

... The second charge is due to what Sony calls "demand for physical media contracting faster than anticipated," especially in Europe. Because of this, Sony says it does not believe the business will generate "sufficient cash flow in the future to recover the carrying amount of long-lived assets."

Steve Jobs' wise decision to avoid Blu-ray
by Yoni Heisler @edibleapple|May 7th 2014 at 1:30PM.

With Blu-ray sales losing steam, Apple's decision to avoid the format altogether seems smarter than ever.

Sony banked on Blu-Ray and is paying the price
Reporter: David Chirico

in Technology

... Sony invested so much time and money into making Blu-Ray players and investing in the Blu-Ray business, it stopped the company from noticing the big trend growing, namely digital media. Apple famously dropped Blu-Ray from all of its systems, with Steve Jobs claiming the format was a ‘bag of hurt’ and not worth using.

Its disc manufacturing business has been severely hit in the past year, with Sony claiming it did not expect so many people to move away from physical media as fast. In Europe, a prime place for Blu-Ray, the rate of movement to digital has been incredible, putting Sony’s platform in the dust.

I still can't digest what might be the implication on those news.I had a little Blu ray collection and I also download movies. And I buy a Blu ray of the downloaded movie that I like.. IMO, BD's dismal sales in Europe might be attributed to region coding..

Without BluRay, the source would suck!

Oh well, majority of us got used to MP3 quality, then WEB-DL it is.

It's not because of the media, you can still have HD video/audio even without Bluray. It's just that they thought it is the best way to take it to the mainstream consumer. But looks like they are wrong... ;D

Bluray will be a thing of the past and attractive only to die hard collectors.  Those that want to use them as Displays in their media room.  I don't mind having a small collection...

Each to his own I think.  I prefer physical media over digital files.  I do have digital files of TV series and mediocre movies.  But for really good movies I prefer Them to be in Blu-ray discs.

I think meron but on a subscription basis and you cannot download the movie.  You can only stream it.  And the service is not available in the Philippines for now.

There is no announcement about discontinuing Blu-ray.  There are no plans to discontinue it, and there are no rumors that they will discontinue it.

The point is not that BD will disappear any time soon.  The point is that it just didn't sell as well as expected.

but what media can store those HD files if not bluray? not everyone have reliable and fast internet speeds..

I think Steve Jobs decision to avoid bluray because they will have to partner up with Sony and it is not good for their ecosystem..but what do I know hehe..never owned an apple product :D

For now, the highest quality is on BD.  Not everyone has a fast internet, but not everyone wants the highest quality either.

In my case, do I want the highest quality?  Yes and no.  If I really like the movie, I buy the BD.  If I haven't seen the movie yet and I don't know whether I'm going to like it or not, I check it out on 720p, 800Mb digital media first.

I think Steve Jobs decision to avoid bluray because they will have to partner up with Sony and it is not good for their ecosystem..but what do I know hehe..never owned an apple product :D

Steve Jobs never liked physical media.  When the Macbook Air came out, I thought it was weird that it didn't have any CD slot at all.  Now it turns out that Steve Jobs was right.  These days, it's weird for any laptop to still have a CD slot.

i just hope our internet speed catches up when bluray dies.

Don't worry ---

- BD will not die soon.
- New codecs will allow encodes to have smaller sizes yet higher quality.
- Combine that with improving internet speeds, and we might have BD-quality downloads in 3GB sizes in some years' time.

I am not sure if Jobs predicted the demise of the physical discs or he simply planned for its failure by providing downloadable content in iTunes.

Hopefully wag muna agad agad mawala ang BDs. I love watching movies in high quality format, most downloads are not really at par on BD's quality.

The 4K Blu-ray format could be dead in the water
OPINION Sony is losing faith in physical formats
By James Rivington
May 1st

Sony has been talking about Blu-ray in Japan this morning and the news does not bode well for anyone hoping for a new 4K Blu-ray format.

... Clearly this doesn't spell the imminent death of the Blu-ray market. Indeed, the BVA reported as recently as December that Blu-ray sales were still on the rise, so let's not get ahead of ourselves.

But you've got to wonder, if Sony - the biggest supporter of Blu-ray over the years - is losing faith in disc formats and sees no financial future in them, what hope is there of the Blu-ray Disc Association pushing out a new physical format for 4K?

That could be true, the question is, kaya kayang masustain ng buying public na yan para makapagpatuloy sa production?

Wala naman kinalaman yan sa quality ng picture and sound eh, its just that the best picture and sound almost always have huge file size. So kung ilalagay mo sa ibang media as long as kasya same na same. ;)
