Are curved TV's a gimmick?
« on: May 30, 2014 at 10:54 PM »
A couple of experts say that curved TV's are a gimmick; the result not of R&D and science on picture quality, but of marketing research.

"Consider this: Samsung's consumer research shows that, when presented the option, Curved TV design is the preferred form factor and raises purchase intent; more than 80% of consumers surveyed said that they would purchase a curved display, even with a $600 premium," says Dan Schinasi, senior manager of TV Product Planning at Samsung.

The article then concludes that "The novelty of curved screens is expected to wear off with time, leading to shipments peaking and then trailing off."

I think so. I think all it does is limit the viewing position.

Mas may depth daw ang images. Pero hindi ko nahalata when i saw 1 at abenson because hindi ko na-compare with flat panels using the same film/material.

If a flat screen is large enough, the distance from its center to the viewer may be shorter than its edges to the viewer. There will be distortion of the image. But that too happens in real life. This distortion our brains factor in as depth.

To me a curved screen will mimmic real life if it wraps around the head simulating peripheral vision. Other than that, a modestly curve screen won't make a big enough impact.

If the screen very big then curve it. But for this screen sizes... keep it flat. Just gimmick.

marketing gimmick definitely

curved screen at a distance - you'll still look at any part or the whole screen with both eyes
your brain will still see it as flat
in 3D however, using glasses isolating one eye from the other may have an interesting effect

watched on a new Samsung 55-inch curved LCD
I had to move in closer than 4-ft to be in the sweet spot
kung mag-isa okay, kung may kasama agawan kayo sa sweet spot
wala pang perceived quality or depth ek ek yan - sweet spot pa lang

sa bahay na 50-inch gamit ko 5-6ft ayos pa
with the curved screen lalapit ka talaga so kung family kayo manood tabla agad

I still have to watch a good 3D movie on it though pero I doubt it'll bring anything new
especially with content not in 3D using glasses that isolate one eye from the other
it's this isolation that makes the 3D giving that false depth to a flat plane image

with the same amount of money, I'll go for a bigger sized screen instead
makapanood pa buong village

Best Buy here had a side by side coparison on 2 Samsung models, both 4K, both 55", one is curved and the other one is our conventional panel,...

My daughter and I both agreed that the conventional panel still is much crisp and accurate,
colors are really bright and vibrant, the only thing that took somehow excite us was that the curved panel
look quite nice, its something different, but somehow has nothing special to offer much,...
