Just saw a tweet confirming that the appointment of Tab Baldwin as Ateneo HC is official. That's quite an upgrade :)
We deserve better.

will this change anything as far as who has the biggest chance in winning it all? I mean with La Salles' virtually intact line up, addition of Mbala and acquisition of Ayo?

by the way, any worthy player that might probably find his way to UST, kahit isang magaling ng PG lang sana.

IMO, not by much - talent almost always wins out in basketball and DLSU will simply be too talented and too deep next season.

I don't like the hiring of Tab Baldwin, for the same reason why I'm never in favor of imports playing in the collegiate leagues ....... collegiate basketball is one sport where our country has an absolute over-supply of local talent. Hiring foreign players/coaches will just displace a few more deserving people.

I'm with the BCAP (Yeng Guiao, at least) on this one, Tab running ADMU would be displacing a just-as or more deserving local coach .......Guiao used LETRAN's Ayo as an example of an "unknown" coach just waiting for his shot at coaching and showing great results.

No need to look far for ADMU, Sandy A. has long paid his dues serving as assistant coach in the UAAP and the PBA ...... he deserves a shot being head coach.

by the way, any worthy player that might probably find his way to UST, kahit isang magaling ng PG lang sana.

UST will be in UAAP seniors basketball hell for the next few seasons (at least) ...... the last Finals was their best shot at winning. Marvin Lee looks like the only nice piece left, Bonleon should be dropped asap.

Now that their man core is gone, they should get back to basics. UST doesn't play the tycoon-recruitment game and have always relied on walk-in tryouts and their HS program.

They should get back to what Aric Del Rosario did many years ago, by watching & recruiting players from a specific region ........ in Aric's time, he got players from his home province of Pampanga & the Tarlac areas.

for some reason madaming magagaling sa Pampanga, I recall yung mga powerhouse team ng UST dati maraming taga Pampanga like Ballesteros(not sure) and espino.

sana maka tsamba naman, yung pagkatalo nila sa FEU sa pananaw ko kung meron silang solid PG baka naiba ang istorya.

And they didn't object to Black during that time? MVP will get the best out there pulling anyone from his roster of companies. Same with Danding for DLSU.

The best coach is believing their players can do their jobs. It helps if they have a good set of superstars but it would be great if they can motivate and hone skills of bench players as well.

Sobrang madaming magaling from Pampanga & the surrounding provinces. Right of the bat, PBA players Abueva, Arwind, Sangalang, Castro, etc.

Besides, being a hotbed of basketball, there are many Kapampangans with foreign lineage - kaya madaming matatangkad.

A college friend of mine (kumpare, as well), is a Kapampangan. He tells stories of the old days when the US military bases were still in Pampanga ....... the Americans subsidized the meals/snacks of the public elementary schools of the surrounding areas.

Since the food served came from the US, the rich nutrition likely played a part on why people there are taller than the rest of the country.

This is not limited to basketball players ..... many of the famous beauty queens/models come from the area.

=======================================================================

UST has long starved for a great PG to man it ........ the last good (not great) one was probably Fortuna. The last great ones were probably Bal David & Dale Singson.

Sad to say, UST will be in basketball hell for a looong time - hope they get lucky with their walk-in tryouts.

Makes sense newwaveboy.

Norman Black is married to a Filipina and has long been a permanent resident here. By law, he is allowed to coach in the professional and collegiate leagues. Tim Cone falls in the same category.

If MVP chooses, he can go around the rules and just appoint Baldwin as team consultant & have him call the shots. Of course, it won't look good as whoever is the head coach will be a lame duck.  ;D

Madami akong naging kaklase from the Pampanga/Tarlac areas ...... sadyang mas malalaki at malalakas sila. Hehe.

I recalled in one inter baranggay league in our town, may player yung team ng mga tyuhin ko, isang parang si paras ang buhok na mahaba at may kulay pa, isang may Chinese features at isang 5"10 inches player na black lineage, sabi ko sa sarili ko wala naman sa itsura ang magaling, may bagbulong player daw ng UAAP pero di naman ako pamilyar, nung nag round robin, yung mukhang Chinese nag dunk ng windmill same nung ginawa ni Jordan na nilagpasan yung ring tapos dunk, turned out to be Roloff Liangco, a star player from Angeles, the 5"10 guy jumped barely foot from the free throw line and slammed the ball hard, turned out to be Starling, a player from Clark, yung kamukha ni paras, ilang beses nag two hand reverse slam dunk sa game mismo, the guy is Hacbang not sure kung pampanga din.

anyway, ive been wondering why yung magagaling na foreign players sa UAAP and NCAA bakit di nakakarating sa PBA?

Simply put, only Filipinos and Fil-Foreigners (with approved documents) are allowed to enter the PBA.

Standout collegiate imports like Ekwe, Adeogun, Abdul, Mbala, etc can only play in the PBA as imports in import-laden conferences ...... of course, this is unlikely since they are up against more-skilled imports from the USA.

Hehe, tama ka brader ...... it does sound a bit strange and ironic.

Of course, they were accepted and allowed to play being student-athletes of their respective schools ....... however, it's an open secret that most were "recruited" by certain schools specifically to play ball, with bigtime "benefits" to boot.

There are lots of foreign students who played in the UAAP who were neither heavily recruited nor played for "benefits".  One that comes to mind is Bornancin of UP and the Faith Academy players of Ateneo (Kirk Long is one). There are also quite a few in football.

Sam Ekwe's massive success in the NCAA opened the gates for more African players in the collegiate leagues, so much so, that we actually have scouts in places like Nigeria and Cameroon.

Of course bro, Bornancin & Long were of a different case as the others - everyone knows that the discussion on imports, refer mainly to those from Africa.

I agree that it was Ekwe's success who jump-started the "recruitment" of these imports.
