4K Blu-ray Disc
« on: Oct 07, 2014 at 01:03 AM »
Announced: September 5, 2014 (over a month ago)
Spec: 4K resolution video at 60fps on 66-100GB discs.
License: Starts Spring/Summer 2015
Players: Christmas 2015

I expect a need for new AV receivers and HDMI ver 2.0 cables

This would really improve the saleability of 4K TVs.

So when are you buying your 4K player?

I would really like to see a Playstation 4 or Xbox One with a 4K Blu-ray drive.

I kind of doubt that either would have it without a hardware upgrade. Maybe in a later revision with a new drive and a new SOC.

Stagea: When has Sony or Microsoft not make a hardware revision in their respective video consoles? Sony for example did hardware revisions in these stages for the original PS3 (2006), slim PS3 (2009) & super slim PS3 (2012). PS4 came out in 2013 so a "slim PS4 with 4K Blu-ray drive" can come out as early as 2015 or 2016. 2015 coincides with dedicated 4K Blu-ray players being placed on the shelf.

It makes a lot of marketing sense if they want to move units. One of the motivators for me to get a PS3 in 2007 was the Blu-ray drive and free Spider-man 3 Blu-ray bundle.

jas: Thread appears to be 4K in general. This thread is specific to 4K Blu-ray Discs.

I think the timing's great as the cost of 4K displays are still somewhat high today and should improve by 2016. Glad I didn't buy a new TV when my 46-inch green screened.
