Foam Surround Punctured
« on: Oct 23, 2014 at 11:37 AM »
Helping a friend to source opinions on how to easily fix his damaged foam surround. Natusok ng screwdriver while attaching the driver to the enclosure. Item just arrived and was shipped from US pa. Ano pinakamadaling way to fix this? Pwede ba idikit na lang? If for replacement, kelangan same na same ba because it might affect SQ? Thanks sa mga sasagot.

Sound check mo if there is audible mechanical sounds. Also observe over time if the tear grows. If sq is ok and tear remains the same then I suggest that you leave it alone. I don't think that will be much of an issue.

Thanks! We did check the sound last night and so far wala naman kami narinig na difference. We'll be observing the sound again soon.

I suggest that you forget about it. If something comes up later then pa bago mong surround. I personally kasi like it a lil damaged like that but has original surround and glue than a fixed one with questionalble quality and durability. These closed cell foam naman have rip stopping characteristics.

So would you suggest to glue it? What glue should he use? The owner wants it fixed talaga but the shipping cost worries him. If he will be convinced na walang SQ difference then he might leave it like that.

Try putting tape (not sure what kind para tumagal ang kapit) over the tear to prevent further ripping of the foam.

Kung lumaki na talaga ang rip (over time), have the foam surround changed by the Speaker Doctor.

Of course iba pa rin kapag original foam.

I suggested to have it replaced with the same and original foam surround. Told him to contact the manufacturer and buy the surround as it will be cheaper that way than sending the driver back to them.

Haha.

Naiisip ko din ito tukayo. Hindi ba siya matigas kapag nag-dry? What if rugby para may flexibility pa din?

rugby might eat up the surround material.
i'd go with the elmer's glue suggestion by jo.

if rugby is too strong, you might consider rubber chack..ito ung ginagamit namin pandikit ng table tennis rubber sa kanyang handle..less viscous pa siya.

Patch up work lang naman, as in surgical repair lang. You can use rugby contact cement pero matigas din yun.

If you're concerned with flexibility then use silicone sealant, usually available ito sa mga hardware, hindi na kailangan ng syringe na nabibili naman sa botika.

i'd go with the elmer's glue suggestion by jo.

I tthink it would not if the surrounds are made of expanded polyethylene foam. But just to be sure, you can test with a tiny drop sa teared surrounds.

foam surrounds should not be a big deal, its "reason for being" is to support the diaphragm in tandem with the spiders........

Kailangan flexible glue, Elmers is hard when it dries. Thin layer of silicone should work. Contact cement should work but it would be risky as if you make a mistake when your joining the two pieces, wala ng tangalan.

Question master Tony. What if the original foam surrounds is replaced with rubber, ano ang magbabago sa kanya? Sensitivity etc?

Anong brand at saan nakakabili niyan sinasabi mo flexible glue? Might come in handy even with fabrics.

Btw, have you tried using Elmer's glue? The all-purpose white glue really isn't that hard.

Have you even seen the intended application? ;D Wala naman two pieces to join there eh, it's just a small rip in the surround that needs patching up.  ;)
