Has anyone tried setting up HTPC using XBMC and Linux? What hardware would you recommend?

You may want to try OpenElec (http://openelec.tv/) as an option ... you wouldn't have to deal with the Linux OS.

Hi Tristan,

Sorry, I was not as helpful as I want to be. I use an ATOM-based unit with an NVIDIA GPU. I use OpenElec (openelec.tv) as the OS/package. OpenElec can be installed to a USB flash drive (as a Live version) ... that way you can check for compatibility with your hardware without installing. If you set it up in this manner, booting to the flash drive will bring you to Kodi (XBMC's new name), after a few seconds, and you can add and scrape (for info) your video and music libraries.

Check out the site and the screenshots using the link above. As I said, you don't have to be a Linux expert or user to use OpenElec.

I am using XBMC in an E450 machine, Nvidia GT530 with Zorin (Linux OS) and everything works ok. I just have a problem when you are playing a remuxed movie with HD audio. Video works fine but there is just a static sound for audio. For non hd audio movies no problem.

I am running XBMC(Gotham) recently updated under Centos 6, runs perfectly except it won't shutdown/poweroff the system it only closes XBMC, had to write a small shell script to make it shutdown and power off the computer once it sees XBMC no longer running, also had some trouble setting up "wake on lan", apart from that every thing plays and work perfectly.

I am using old hardware, my MB does not have HDMI and Optical out so I used a discrete video and sound card, using up both PCI-E and PCI slot.

1 40GB DIsk for OS

Asus DG Soundcard for 5.1 Output (Toslink)

Do you shutdown your PC through XBMC?  When you press S in your keyboard it shows the shutdown options (Exit, Shutdown, Reboot, etc).  Maybe it also depends on your skin.  I use the original Confluence.
