Topic: Rockwool Under Gypsum Board Ceiling???

Im constructing my modest home and simple HT room for a few months now.  Since I do not have the funds to treat the room, my only concern is rattling of the ceiling during bass heavy movie scenes.  My question is, will it help to put rockwool under the gypsum board of my entire ceiling to minimize the rattle?

If any of you can recommend a ceiling material instead of gypsum, please let me know.  Thanks!

not only the gypsum board rattles but the metal furrings as well. i think better use wood as ceiling joist para walang garalgal na mangyayari.

Sir, baka hindi gaano makatulong ang rockwool or any sound absorber device. You need to "strengthen" or "patibayin" ang ceiling with additional braces.

Weng, sa case mo, the spaces between the gypsum board and metal furrings ang nag-rattle. You can put adhesive in between those gaps and let it dry before using your HT. May mga expanding foam in canisters din pero medjo mahal na kasi yun.

Yun ang mode or "tuning" ng board. Hehe! Surface area vs volume of air inside. basically para siyang panel trap.

hindi pala simple na problema ito.  Pwede nga wood kaso kadalasan metal furrings talaga.  Baka nga damihan ko nalang ng screws.

Rockwool under gypsum is very good in noise isolation.  Our showroom has two adjacent listening rooms and our walls and ceiling have rock wood under gypsum.  You can listen in both rooms with almost no sound leaking across.   

For the bass… the room dimension is more critical.  There are some dimensions that really just hit the right frequencies resulting is either echo or bass reflex. However, the suggestion of other members of adding more screws or more studs will help.

40 Kgs is adequate if using a 4" layer & I would recommend at least a 2" gap above the Rockwool. I used sealant on all the framing to eliminate any chance of rattles. If you are using more than 1 layer or a combination of plywood & gypsum board, Green Glue (if your pockets are deep enough) between the layers is excellent otherwise silicon sealant will suffice.

I'm reviving this thread because I have a similar situation.

I'm having one of my room's ceiling constructed out of wooden framing (2x2) instead of metal furrings to prevent vibrations caused by low frequencies. I will be using gypsum board as ceiling.

QUESTION: Will the wooden framing + gypsum board be sufficient to avoid any rattling during heavy bass scenes/music? Damihan na lang ng screws. Or mas maganda kung 3/4" plywood na lang gamitin as ceiling?
Or better yet, wooden frame + 3/4" plywood + gypsum board  <--- O.A. na ba ito?

I have visited rooms with Metal Furrings as ceiling and with the use of Bass traps we could not make the ceiling rattle. We can schedule an audition if you would want to see how TRODT / Tony Rodriguez set it up.

Mga Boss,,,,claro ko lang,  Rockwool 4" thick is above the gypsum ceiling with a space between them...meaning ang Rockwool expose sa ceiling void?....tama ba understanding ko?

Ano ang sound insulation neto noise from outside or is it noise going out of the room?  Sana both

Lastly saan pwede bumili ng pinka affordable na rockwool...if meron banda South mas ok Thanks sa mga feedback

Thanks! Ginawa ko na lang wood ang framing para sure na hindi magvibrate. Yes, use of bass traps/diffusers/absorbers will definitely be included in the room. I'm trying to isolate the problem on the ceiling alone, para sa ceiling pa lang, well constructed na against vibrations (or ma-minimize man lang, plus with the help of bass traps etc).

Yung din plan ko dati e, may Rockwool sa loob ng ceiling, but I scrapped that out since masyadong maliit ang opening between gypsum ang cement ceiling. Besides, buhos (cement) kasi yung mismong upper ceiling ko e kaya pwede na siguro hehe.

As far as I know, both, but for me it is more of sound insulation going out of the room, because lower frequencies tend to escape more out of a room.

Pagkaalam ko, meron warehouse na nagbebenta ng Rockwool malapit sa NAIA1/2 dati (Paranaque), I forgot. Search the forums here na lang. Nakabili ako dati dun, Roxul brand yata, pero mas pricey.

RXV, whatever material you choose, try to look for its MSDS, material safety disposition sheet, you can ask the vendor about it or search the internet...
