HELP: Probox 4-Bay Enclosure Power Supply Issues
« on: Feb 15, 2015 at 09:15 PM »
Need some HELP!

As I turned on my bedroom HT setup this evening, all components turned on EXCEPT my probox 4bay HDD enclosure. It actually turned on for 1-second then it immediately turned off. All the while I thought it was just some loose connection on the power cord of the power supply but I have tried different outlets...even tried 2 different power cords but still not turning on. The power supply unit is a SHANPU POWER SWITCHING ADAPTER model no: PAS060123-H1. It has 4-pins on one end of the cable leading to the probox. Checked if something got fried via smelling but no smell of any butned components. Isolated already the problem but still won't turn on. Unfortunately I only have one set of this so I cannot check if the probox got affected.

What could have been the culprit? Thanks!

Have same problem before.
Just unplug the psu from outlet for 30mins.  Before  yoy push the power button on the box,  make it sure that the equipment/device that it is connected has been boot up. On my part,  I make it sure na naka boot up na pch ko before ko push yung power button ng box.

Thanks Doc John (comet) for letting me borrow his PSU for the probox. I just tested it now and it worked w/ myy probox. Therefore the issue is really w/ the PSU. Need to have it replaced or repaired.

Im in the market now for a Probox. In this thread alone, 2 users have bad experience. Is it a not so good product? Or, at the very least, not sturdy or well built enough item?

I am planning to get one next week.

atty,
As to the probox PSU, i had a similar case pero that's entirely my fault coz i dropped it during a relocation to another room. it will fire up for a second (LED indicates there's power) then goes blank.

IMO, the probox are ok,They've served my storage needs until i moved to RAID/JBOD. No secret here that for a time i was selling these just 'cause there are no sellers locally, tien and nocs sell them now i think.

I find the USB 3.0 cables bundled a replaceable item. so make sure you lay down the cable with least tension and uncoiled for sable connections. HTH

There is a probox seller here at Pdvd. I got mine from his. Forget lang his name and digits. Maybe he can help in sourcing one.

I have three 4-bay Proboxes and reading the feedback here, I believe that the PSUs are inherently of low quality. I had one Probox (bought from Australia) die early, seems the board itself was faulty. Then I got two Proboxes locally, bought from Dynaquest, which left me with one extra PSU. The PSU of one of the locally-bought Proboxes early on had issues, it would only work intermittently.  I didn't have it replaced under warranty though because I thought it was a hassle and I had the extra PSU from the dead Probox anyway. Eventually this PSU died, leaving me with only one working PSU.

The good thing about the Probox PSU is that it only requires one voltage (+12V), unlike some enclosures that need +12 and +5V. Moreover, the pin layout of the PSU's 4-pin plug is clearly marked in the PSU's sticker, i.e. which pins are +12V and which are the ground. Knowing this, I built a so-called "PSU tap" i.e. I tapped the 12V rail of my computer's PSU to power one Probox. The current requirement of the Probox is just 5A, which can obviously be supplied by a computer's PSU:

This is a simple DIY project that only required components salvaged from old PC parts (e.g. expansion card bracket, male and female "Molex" connectors, LEDs), a small piece of leftover breadboard and some soldering equipment/skills. It powers the Probox perfectly, and even if the last PSU dies, I'll just connect the salvaged 4-pin plug to the "externalized" Molex connector and have the computer's PSU power my two Proboxes:

If you really can't find a specific replacement PSU, the foolproof way to power your Probox is to use a computer PSU. That's because 12V is a standard PC PSU voltage (along with +5V), and 12V rails typically have a lot of amps so that one PSU can power a bunch of Proboxes. It's not necessarily a PSU powering an actual rig, since you might be using the Probox for an NMT or something. Rather, you can just hunt for a working PSU from obsolete or junk computers so you won't have to spend anything. You need to DIY it a little though to put a power on switch and maybe a load resistor for some PSUs, but it's a surefire way to power a Probox and it's nearly cost-free as long as you can look for an obsolete computer with a working PSU.

Or just buy any 12V 5A power adaptor and replace the wire with your probox wire.
84" 100" 120" 150" Motorized or Manual Projector Screens still available. Just pm.

This is the easier approach, though I don't know if these are easy to find from mall stores. From what I've seen switching power supplies that are sold in malls are typically for laptops and no laptop runs at 12V only. Maybe more specialized electronics stores like Deeco or those in Raon have these. Or you can just try getting it online, I did an OLX search and spotted someone selling a 5A 12V adapter intended for DVR/CCTV use, it only costs P250. You just need to chop off the plug and wire it to the 4-pin plug properly. Here's the link to the ad:

Sorry to bump this thread but, in light of the covid thingy, I started to tinker again with my HT which I havent been using for awhile. Alas, when I started everything, everything else worked except for my Probox. There is also no light in the LED indicator of the power adaptor.

1. There is a seller in Shopee that sells the exact adapter, anyone tried that seller already?
2. What are my other options instead of buying the same adapter? Something tells me, the power adapter is really the weakest link of this product and getting exactly the same adapter wil prolly give me the same problem pretty soon.

Thanks

If you are a little handy in electronics and may have an old but reliable laptop psu laying around, you can buy a dc to dc buck converter in shopee for 250 pesos. This device converts 20 Vdc laptop psu to 12 volts with constant current. Actually, you can set it to any voltage lower than the source. However, it looks ugly with the circuit board exposed but you can find a case though.

Here's my re-purposed laptop psu used in powering an 8-ch CCTV.
