King, nakita mo ba yun "sinulid" type na speaker cover ng Sonus? You also might want to consider that in your next built.

Thanks! I deliberately made it into a document/blog style so that many other can get some ideas and start building their own hehe

@Courage
Thanks for the hospitality. I really enjoyed the session.

@Gino
Haha sige swap tayo dun sa 2A3 mo, joke! :)

@Nelson
Believe me sir Nelson, 3 years ago pa lang, naisip ko na gawin yan haha. I wanted to incorporate that "string grill" into my sub build before. Pero hindi rin natuloy. But it's do-able. Difficult but do-able :)
Maybe on my next project :D

Currently, I'm experimenting on a project. I'm stuffing my sealed sub build with acoustic foam at the backside and fiberfill at the sides (per chamber), to see if there are any improvement(s) with regards to bass quality and output for HT use. Cut-off would be at 50hz (hi-pass) for these subs, but for now it's full bass range (0-150hz) for testing

Sir Nelson, when I get to go there soon, I need some more acoustic foam hehe

Honestly, I haven't tried putting acoustic absorbers sa sub because I think  wala masyadong improvement but you can try it because sealed sub ka naman. I'll explain it to you when you when you come.

Agree with master nelson.  Sine waves of low frequencies are too looong that will require thick abosorbers.  If your dealing with sealed box, try to consider using deadening materials to conpletely seal te box.

Pwede din niyang integrate sa big cabinets ng upcoming theater room niya.

Actually, that was my initial thinking too. Lower frequencies might just pass through the absorbers.
But based on my experience, on sealed enclosures (that I made before), the stuffing inside really affects the quality/tightness of the bass. On ported enclosures, not so much (negligible lang). I also tried deadening materials inside, may improvement naman, but not much really for the effort, as long as you enclosure is properly braced already.

Also, besides the experimental acoustic absorbers inside, I also had these things in mind on this project:

1. I initially created the enclosure based on recommended manufacturer specs, which means the sealed subs perform on full bass range (0hz-100hz) but now I am going to make the enclosure space (cu. ft.) smaller by putting foam inside to reduce displacement a little to make the subs have a little more punch at the expense of decreased lower bass roll-off.

2. I am going to have these sealed subs cut off at 50hz (highpass) for them to act as upperbass/midbass up to 150hz. My other ported 15" subs will handle the 50hz (lowpass) and below bass.

3. These are strictly meant for HT use only, which means that SPL/slam&depth will be the highest priority (not SQ).
 I will probably make a strictly music-only sub in the future for the ultimate distortion-free musical bass hahaha

4. Also, when all else fails, I'll just remove the acoustic foam and re-use it for another project, so no loss in trying :)

I got to tinker and experiment with the sealed subwoofer with acoustic egg crate foam inside.
Since my sealed subwoofer enclosure is comprised of a separate 4-chamber (one for each sub driver @1.5cu.ft. each), I was only able to fill up 2 chambers with acoustic foam, so it means only half of the whole enclosure is stuffed. The subwoofer set is bi-amped (1 amp for the 2 left pieces, and 1 identical amp for the 2 right pieces), so I was able to do an A-B test if there are any differences in the bass output/quality (left drivers vs right drivers).

NOTES:
1. The sub drivers are meant and designed for HT (slam and SPL), so SQ is not of top priority here (although distortion must of course be kept to a minimum). For me, I find these 12" drivers a bit slow and not too musical for SQ music (compared to expensive subs), but it is very good for HT, even for very low frequencies, kayang kaya niya, it is really hard to bottom-out.
2. For the experiment, the bass range is from 0hz-150hz, but next time it will be high passed from 50hz-150hz (upper/mid bass duties).
3. Each driver is 350w RMS rated, but I think the amp is a bit underpowered for them. Estimate ko is 250w RMS lang ang actual for each sub real-time.

TEST MATERIALS
1. Fast Five (starting scene where bus tumbles and then title screen booms)
2. Man of Steel (Fighting scene with main villain near the end)
3. MI: 4 (Scene where bomb explodes near the Russian Kremlin I think)
4. Master and Commander (Ship fight scene) - nawawala copy ko :p
5. You can recommend me a movie action scene and I'll try it out :)

OBSERVATIONS
Doing an A-B testing (over and over), reveals not much difference between A and B enclosures, it's really hard to distinguish between the two sides for HT bass heavy scenes since you are focused on the action and not for any SQ.
Please note that the acoustic foam is only 2" thick, so it may not be sufficient to absorb the lowest frequencies at that thickness. I wonder if there is any difference if I will make it 4" or 6" thick? That would be another experiment :) Also, if I line the whole enclosure literally with acoustic foam and no fiberfill? Although that may also change the internal displacement too much.

SIDE EXPERIMENT
Finished on doing HT tests, I decided to just try out some SQ music to see if there are any differences on more "subtle" bass duties. Although I don't consider these sub drivers as "musical", I just did it anyway out of curiosity.
Playing Jennifer Warnes - Way down deep, I did notice a slight difference in bass quality from A and B.
When I was about 1-2 feet away from the drivers, I noticed that side B (with the acoustic foam) had slightly less distortion/vibration from the driver cones, probably due to the back waves being "more" absorbed/diffused than the the other side (A) without acoustic foam. But of course it is not a night-and-day difference, you really have to hear it or listen critically to distinguish the two (A-B). But yes, there is a slight improvement, although just a little (but every little step matters right hehe).

VERDICT
Although there are too many factors to consider (that I haven't done yet), putting 2" acoustic foam inside the enclosure (sealed) reveals little/negligible improvement for HT SPL/slam duties, but MAY have a slight improvement when used for subtle SQ music bass duties, wherein distortion must be kept at a minimum.

For now, I'll remove the acoustic foam from my sub enclosure and put it somewhere else more useful, like my Monitor Audio speaker and BG full towers, soon :)

pare, try to play on fiberfills and wood blocks.  Fiberfill would allow you to fool the speakers and will simulate larger box of up to 20%.  If your sub sounded like a midbass and would like to add for that reverb, add some fiberfill.  The wood blocks acts in the reverse.  It reduces the volume of the box.  If it sounded delayed or too boomy, try to add some for that snap.

Yes, nasubukan ko na Paeng. Yung fiberfill gamay ko na. Yung wood din nagamit ko na rin, although sa port area lang ng ported box, to lower frequency tuning. Grabe ramdam na ramdam ang difference :)

on my sealed sub, the designer recommends a single thin layer of fibre fill on all sides...i asked if I could add more (why do we always want to add more ???).  He said its going to make the sound less lively or something to that effect...

For me it really depends on the design of the enclosure. There are some which don't require any stuffing at all. But for for some, tuning can be adjusted to an extent, but of course the enclosure design is the most critical part. Dapat sa simula pa lang eh ok na :)

"Fiberfill would allow you to fool the speakers and will simulate larger box of up to 20%."

This was what I was told during my car audio days. I've accepted it for years. Now that I have researched quite a bit of acoustic info and having talked to people in the know, I doubt this is true. If in fact the fiberfill offers air resistance, it will do the opposite. It will give the effect of a smaller box.

For me (based on my experience), fiberfill may not simulate a larger box in real-time,
but it made my sealed sub a heck tighter in bass response. But yes, too much is also not good.

With some time to spare, I decide to open up my Monitor Audio RS Center and try to stuff in acoustic egg crate foam if there would be any sonic improvement. Actually, the MA's already sound excellent for my tastes (paired with a Denon for HT duties with port hole sealed), but I just wanted to see and try :)

Upon opening the box, 'Lo and behold...

Naunahan na pala ako ng MA engineers hahaha! The whole box is lined with acoustic foam.
Well, why fix it if it ain't broke, right? Haha. If Monitor Audio uses acoustic foam for their boxes, then I'm probably also in the right track of stuffing acoustic foam into anything I can get my hands on :)
