If within 8k budget, brand new, try auditioning the Anthony Audio Philippians or the wharfedale 122's.

I like how the wharfedale 122 and 220 looks but I thought they are power hungry based on forums. will a t-amp work with it?

Look for speakers that have at least 90db sensitivity. These can be driven by t-amps.

newbie question sir. how about 89db, is there any problem if below 90db? mine is Rti-A1 and wharf. 155 both are 89db and being driven by SMSL SA-60. So far ok nman.

The SA-60 is not a T-Amp; it is based on the TPA3116D2 IC from Texas Instruments. T-Amps use Tripath ICs. They are both Class D designs, however.

As for sensitivity, that depends on the playback level that you need and the material that you play. Ratings between makers also vary. You shouldn't worry too much if your system performs well; your amp can put out decent power anyway (it is more powerful than the most common T-Amps).

If you will use analog sources, then you don't need a DAC. Now, except for pure transports, most digital sources such as cd players have DACs. Even a cellphone, desktop computer or laptop has a DAC inside. Some will prefer to add an outboard DAC to their audio system.

I can understand the lure of T-amps. Relatively affordable with a reputation for being tube sounding ( I am not convinced.)

But one has to consider is that true Tripath chip amps have low power and require high sensitivity speakers. 94db is the sweet spot. Modern "t-amps", which they are not, have more power. One must make this distinction.

High sensitivity speakers are hard to come by. Modern branded speakers rarely come with high sensitivity. Choices are usually vintage speakers or DIY speakers. These aren't cheap. They also demand a lot of research and work.

Personally not tried Dai-ichi speakers but they have 90db up speakers and drivers that are budget friendly.

If you are planning to use smsl, I recommend you use the smsl sa60, it has more power, with regards to speakers, i recommend psb alpha b1, wharf 10.1 or 10.2, daichi is also a bang for the buck speaker. This speakers can ba driven well by sa60.

I've tried powering a pair of wharfedale dentons at 86db 6ohms with a smsl sa 60, they can do pretty decent volumes. I think the 122's are easier to drive.

thanks for your replies... sorry for the confusion, i meant additional dac like schiit. do you guys hear the difference between the onboard dac of iphones, ipad and pc versus external dacs? i tried using my ipad on a onkyo stereo system and i can hear that the sounds are weaker and not much detailed vs cds. i am just clarifying the dac issue since tomshardware reviewed dacs and concluded that the onboard motherboard dac has the same sound vs expensive dacs.

What dock were you using? Most Apple products can push a clean output voltage of about 1Vrms via the headphone jack. Most CD players can get closer to 2Vrms, which explains the volume difference when your Onkyo is set to the same gain.

^ my experience with 3.5 to RCA is less than ideal, used different cables, from the generic ACE hardware types to custom cables like Van Den Hul. There are certain frequencies that sound distorted, mostly in the HF. If you can get a DAC, by all means do so.

im currently using a Pioneer S-X10 two way speaker got it from a japan surplus store near my place, these are high sensitivity speakers sealed, air suspension type, sounds sweet,im pairing it with my tubes.try vintage sealed type speakers.minsan swertihan din and choose according to your sound preference and budget of course.
anyway,"sound " is subjective..my advise ..trust your ears.
