Nagaoka MP-110 or Sumiko Pearl?
« on: Jul 12, 2015 at 01:40 AM »
Looking for a replacement cartridge for my vintage Pioneer PL-570 (XL-a700 Japanese version).

Currently, it still has its original Pioneer cartridge from the 70s but it's worn out.

And so, I'm looking for a good replacement cartridge without breaking the bank—should I get a Nagaoka MP-110 or a Sumiko Pearl? Any experiences with either or both?

I mostly listen to slow rock, jazz, and vocals.

If you can stretch, I'd recommend the Ortofon Red cart . . .

I can say its an all-rounder cart. Its balanced across the band which I can see suits your genre.

I vote for this one as well. I got to try both. I initially had the ortofon red but replaced it with nagaoka since the red is too bright for my taste.

What are the characteristics of the red?

I have a vintage Pioneer PL-25 Idler turntable.  As JoeyGS notes, I find it a well-balanced cart.  If I want detail and warmth, I use the main rig using a Benz Glider.

If I want to listen casually, and just enjoy in the second system,  the Ortofon Red is very musical with my Pioneer.  Not the last word in detail, but well balanced.

If your'e listening for extended hours don't get a cart that will make your system bright, you'll get listening fatigue. Remember that you want to relax, go for a cart that you can enjoy listening for extended hours.

If budget is not an issue, I would recommend the Nagaoka MP-200 instead
