Passive, Active or All-in-One systems?
« on: Jul 20, 2015 at 02:17 PM »
Hi guys. I read in other forums that it is not advisable to use a component or HT system for live (e.g. videoke, PA) applications for a long period of time as the speakers are not designed for this type of application. I've been using my HT for videoke parties kaya natatakot ako baka bumigay na ang mga speakers kaya I'm planning to have a PA system dedicated for videoke, as well as pwede pang gamitin ng mga bata pag may show sa school. My options are as follows:

1) All-in-One system: Available brands are Laney Audiohub, Fender Passport/Venue, Yamaha Stagepas and Peavey Escort/PVi Portable. This is the most convenient and is portable, but it cannot be upgraded. Among them, yung Laney and Peavey ang medyo affordable.

2) Passive speakers + Powered mixer: Marami ring brands available. Yun lang, pag nagdown and powered mixer, hindi na magagamit until it is repaired, or may spare amp/mixer. Medyo mas mahal din pag pinagsama ang costs ng each component.

3) Active speakers: Since I have an analog Phonic mixer, I can just get a pair of active speakers. Advantage is hindi na problema ang pag match ng rating, and if one speaker blows, tuloy pa rin ang ligaya. The downside however is that each speaker has a separate power supply kaya kailangan ng 2 mahabang extension cords kung sa garden or sa hall gagamitin. I took a look at JBL, Laney, Carvin and Alto. Yung QSC and B-52 are out of my budget range.

I hope our experienced members can give me advice as to which option would be the better choice, as well as recommend brands that are good. Thanks in advance.

I personally don't mind using my HT system for videoke. Is there such thing as designed for videoke etc speakers?
But it seems you need to play higher volumes kaya you might need pro audio speakers. I would go the powered speakers route for ease of implementation. No more matching for resistance etc. Just remember, most pro audio speakers are not designed to go below 50 hz so you might need a sub.

Thanks sir Nelson. I have been using my HT speakers for videoke too, until I read the posts over at Karaoke Scene. Apparently, the HT speakers are designed for recorded audio. If using it for live applications (like singing with mics), there is the risk of blowing them especially if the mics are dropped or if the singer suddenly screams into the mic. Probably it would also depend on the specs of the speakers. Yun lang, medyo din natakot ako as I would not want to destroy my stuff especially kung yung mga bisita ay walang pakialam sa gamit ko (yes there are those types of people lalo na pag nakainom) kaya I'm thinking of going the pro audio route.

I agree about the need for a sub for speakers that don't go below 50Hz which are usually those using 10 inch woofers. There are also speakers with 12" - 15" woofers that have base frequency responses from about 40Hz - 44Hz. I'll have to check first then maybe buy a subwoofer later kung talagang kulang ang low end.

Btw, what do you think of the local brands (Konzert, Crown, Dai Ichi, etc.) compared to the imported ones (Carvin, Laney, Peavey, etc.) in terms of audio quality? Kasi kung may local brand na comparable ang quality sa mg imported, I might opt to buy them instead.

Durability is another issue din kasi. Pero mukha nga malakas ka magpatugtog so ba all means get pro audio speakers na lalo na kung outdoor setup. Yun nadinig ko na maayos is yun JBL.

Compressor / Limiter siguro kailangan if you're concerned about this.

Agree. Dapat nga lahat ng mic mixer meron na nyan, pro-audio or not.

Meron din pro EQ with limiter na. Aside from the normal EQ functions you can use the EQ part to trim the frequency/ies that causes feedback.

And of course use a mic foam for minimizing plosives and spit.  :P
