Transformer Volume Control Preamp (Passive)
« on: Sep 05, 2015 at 06:37 PM »
Is there anybody who knows the effects of this transformer volume control preamp to low wattage single ended triode amp such as 6bm8?  What I understand is that, it increases the db of the input and output.  So it may increase attack to my 100db speakers.  It's what I need for now to improve performance of my 6bm8 SET. Is my speculation correct?  Kindly enlightened me.

If there anybody who can locally manufacture this TVC?  How much?  Thank you. :)

you may want to ask around for mang Rod Teope, He makes TVC preamp and tube amp as well.
i have his number in my old fone before...

I'm not sure what you are expecting but a TVC attenuates the input signal by stepping it down, the amount of attenuation is selected by selecting different taps in the secondary of the transformer. The truth of the matter is that with TVCs, the output impedance changes as you change taps as opposed to the manner employed by all resistive potentiometers that creates a voltage divider between the input and the output and presents a constant impedance across the entire adjustment range.

Quote
What I understand is that, it increases the db of the input and output.

It does not.

In fact, it does quite the opposite. Being a step-down transformer, the attenuation is accomplished by varying the ratio of the primary versus the secondary windings, however, this is not practical so to be able to choose different attenuation levels, one must use a "stepped" rotary switch and choose the appropriate tap that corresponds to the desired signal attenuation level.

Quote
So it may increase attack to my 100db speakers.  It's what I need for now to improve performance of my 6bm8 SET.

I doubt it. No type of volume control nor preamp can do that to an amp, especially to a tube amp. Most tube amps are "lazy" risers, for they tend to compress the signal and prevent distortion. This is, for what it's worth, is sometimes what is sought after from them. But for your predicament, perhaps a further study of the input section of your amp and stiffening your psu can improve the "attack" you are referring to but at the expense of compression and distortion.

You change one thing for the sake of another thing applies here.

Quote
Is my speculation correct?  Kindly enlightened me.

I hope I didn't lost you up there, it can be quite technical and I was trying to be as objective as I can in my response rather than be subjective.

Quote

I am not aware of such but, IMHO, you may want to reconsider, the reason these TVCs, and moving coil SUTs are priced like that is because of the materials required and the strict tolerance that they must go through during manufacturing. You get what you pay for in this department.

Anyway, you may want to take that last paragraph with a grain of salt.

I agree with JojoD.

But before jumping into another system component,  see if there is a mismatch between your preamp output and your power amp input.  Try borrowing a tubed buffer (aka, MF X-10D) and connect between your preamp and poweramp.  See or rather hear what happens......

Mang Rod s the guy.....;)

if I many ad to what jojod has said, TVC is a passive device, attenuates the signal much like a volume pot...
it has insertion loss and impedance is not uniform with frequency.....Z= 2pifL....
where Z is the impedance, f is frequency and L is inductance of the coils...
it can be made as an isolation type or autotransformer type....

best to use this TVS between a power amp and a preamp if used....

Spot on. And like I said, the impedance varies wildly which, may, or may not, be a match to the preceding stage.

It is common for tube amps to have 470K-ish and above whist a modern Class D amp has a typical input impedance of 10K. So be guided accordingly to prevent a mismatch.

i tried to convince the owner of Golden Mars to make the TVC's offering to give them my design, but no deal...;)
i figured years ago that i am not making this TVC, it will be very costly and difficult to make....
but those who are interested to make one, you can ask Rey Lus to make one for you....09332235765
i can give him my coil winding data.....Rey Luis is the official traffo winder for Rene Rivo....
or you can also ask Boy Pangilinan of Deeco...

Sir Tony pano config or wiring neto? Ilang taps para malaman kung ilan switch/selector kailangan? Si mang Rey gawa pala kaya pulido rin yan.

this is just a continuous winding with several taps, the number of taps
depends on the rotary switch you want to use, anywhere between six to 24 position will do...
in all honesty, i made several attempts to make this, pero palagi akong napuputulan ng wire,
tinigilan ko....pasmado kasi kamay ko...
btw, i was on the phone with mang rey this morning, he says he is good to go
with this, i can guide him with this build, no problem....

Congrats to you bro!  Im glad you have a TVC preamp similar to this TVC SQ.

http://www.tnt-audio.com/ampli/django_e.html

So expensive!  At least kay Mang Rey mura at same SQ lang din naman.  I also found out that tvc quality depends on tranny design.

Norman, eto ang pinagmulan nyan.....http://www.diyaudio.com/forums/tubes-valves/51391-poor-mans-transformer-volume-control.html

pwede naman lagyan ng input selector so you can choose two or more line amps or sources,
pwede rin lagyan ng buffer bago TVC.....maraming pwedeng gawin....
meron akong niluluto, isolation type, pwede gawing balanced outputs...
mag-uusap pa kami ni Rey Luis...

wala namang masyadong makikita sa loob...pagawa ka na, wala ka pan nyan, better kung yung coil former ni Edrel at yung Z11 na bakal nya ang gagamitin....;) we do not have nickel laminates here so GOSS is good enough.....

for those wanting to build this TVC is the schematic:

was at DEECO this noon, and guess who i bumped into? no other than the builder of this TVC....
Ronald DeJesus, he was the diy'er who put this thing together, he built a yellow ST70 that was
able to drive electrostatic speakers....

i met Ronald in 2010 in december in dampalit , malabon, we were co-judges in a music exhibition...

so now it can be told, Ronald DeJesus, tvc builder,
Rey Luis, winder of the tvc traffo....
and Tony Tecson designed this tvc.....

Edrel have z11 cores that will ensure about 3 times more inductance
