2016 system build
« on: Jan 05, 2016 at 10:02 AM »
After a couple of months hibernating and spending time auditioning various sets, my wife and I would like to set-up a simple stereo system this year.  We are putting a cap of 100K for the complete set (dac, amp and speakers).  The idea is to use a laptop as source although venturing into turntables is part of the wishlist.

I have narrowed my choices of speakers to the following:
1.  Opera Mezza
2.  Dynaudio Xcite
3.  B&W CM1 (I wish CM6 is cheap)

To my ears, I love the sound of Vivid but I cannot afford.  The Opera is very agile and fast,  labas lahat but falls short in "emotions" to the Devore-Naim combo I once heard.  The dyns has that silky midrange which my wife really really love but not as detailed as the Opera.  The B&W CM1 has that highs similar to the 800s series I heard which is lively but delicate and not ear piercing.

Any reviews out particularly on the 3 speakers?  Another delimna is to find a suitable budget-friendly amp to pair.  Any comments?

Thanks pdvd.

I will recommend to include a DIY Audio Nirvana 8Inch Horn in the mix.
As an owner for many branded speakers (BW, Dyns, Proac, ZU, Duevel, SF, among others), I must say that the Audio Nirvana 8inch Horn is very very good, at a fraction of the price of High end speakers.

Also because the AN 8"inch Horn is very sensitive you do not need to get a high output AMP. Instead the budget can do to the most detailed and music amp.

Thanks sir.  I already heard the Audio Nirvana but not the 8, I think its 6.5.  Also heard a Mark Audio Alpair.  Both are very very good.  Midrange is very coherent as expected from a single driver but I find it a bit shouty and forward-sounding to my taste.  Im also curious with your Zu with raving reviews, hope to hear one someday.

Uy eto na pala ang balak mo. Suggest ko sana Voxativ then I volunteer RXV to do the box. Then for amp pwede na Cayin or Line Magnetic. Kaso magexceed sa budget na.

There's a Rega Elicit amp and a Dynaudio Excite in the marketplace. Both will sound great paired (and will fit your budget). Besides pleasing your wife, you can not go wrong with a Dynaudio. I miss its silky midrange and detailed highs. For DAC, consider an Audiolab or Rega.

if we're strictly sticking to your 3 choices, it's a toss-up between the Opera and the Dynes.

Used to have Dyn Excite paired with Rega amp and DAC. It sounded awesome. Lalong labas na labas yung silky mids nung Dyns.

thanks guys!  heard the dynes with rega and a synthesis magnum from a friend.  it matches very very well.  unfortunately, i havent heard the opera mezza with a solid state amp though it matches very well with the unico tube amp.  some says the opera is a beast with atleast 50rms.

You should hear the latest Audio Nirvana 8inch Horn. It is a different Animal from the previous Audio Nirvana models.
