220 volt relay
« on: Jan 10, 2016 at 08:38 AM »
Don't know where to post this but i know the techies reside in this forum so here goes..

for the techies out there

I need to turn on a 1 hp pump inside the bathroom, i initially used an wall switch rated for 15 amps but the switch got damaged, now is there a electronic relay that i can use for 220 volts similar in concept sa cars 12v relays ?

yes, a relay or a contactor rated to run a 1hp motor can be used...
the switch you mentioned can then be used to turn on the relay coil and be happy to do so,
since the coil is very small in comparison....

Thanks

Question why was the switch damaged even if the switch was rated for 15 amps ?  1 hp pumps draws something like 10 amps right ?

turn on transients, a motor not yet turning is like a short circuit,
for the rotor to turn and develop torque,
it must first overcome its initial condition...

a 1hp motor is just 740 watts and at 230 volts, that is just 3.2A,
so why is the switch burning out?, first reason i think is quality if that was made in china...
second is the large turn on currents needed to overcome motor inertia.

household switches you find in your homes are not designed to handle large starting current, the sparks would either weld or create pit marks in the switch's contact points.

do get the largest contactor you can find, it should serve you more than a lifetime.

btw, what you need is properly called a "contactor", rather than a relay.

Thanks for the tip, I went to home depot, the contactor was around 3K to 4K and you had to pre-order it. I  just got a big a$$ switch that can handle a 1 HP pump, cheaper pa at around 300php.

Mahal yun! mga gamit ko sa factory nasa less than P1,000 lang. Fuji pa. SN-500 (not sure about the model) are good for 1 hp. They are guaranteed for 20,000 contacts. 4 terminals yun. Kalasin mo muna yun 2 terminals or "platino" para hindi gumana yun 2. Then, kapag nasira na or pitted na, either pwede siyang lihain or ikabit mo yun tinanggal mo. Minsan arcing ang problem din ng mga switches. Ganun din naman sa contactors but contactors are build like a tank. Yun Camsco brand from Taiwan mahusay din.

If you're not in a hurry, bigyan na lang kita. hehe! Check ko muna kung may stock ako.

Bakit ka pa mag relay? Di ba pwede yung fuse switch / mini breaker?

Baka malayo ang load sa switch. Plus, pangit tignan ang fuse switch or mini breaker sa bathroom.
