The S905 chip is fairly recent. It is the same chip that minix neo u1 uses. Basically 4k 30fps or 60fps, h265 video playback is possible.

Check how well the manufacturer supports this product before buying. S905 based Androlid boxes are starting to come out. The designs are fairly similar. How good they perform depends on how good the manufacturer will support the product re firmware upgrades.

Thanks uvax. I got attracted to the Mxq price which is way lower than the HiMedia and Minix. I don't know if the PQ and AQ is equal to, better, or inferior to the other 2 products in "real life" situations. I just got into this 4k thing and I'm still learning the ropes, especially with interconnecting the TV and NMT to the internet.

Edit: Reading up further, the difference between Himedia H8 and Mxq Pro 4K is that the Mxq only has 1GB RAM and 8GB ROM compared to Himedia's 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM. Both claim to have quadcore android 5.1 installed. Price in olx of the Mxq is P3,000 while the Himedia is 7,990.

S905 boards have a reference design that amlogic is recommending.

The part where individual  manufacturer of boxes tweak or cut corners is another topic on its own.

Software is also another issue.

Hit or miss unless you try  or someone tried and make it work.

Nice to see an mxq thread. a friend recently got this from lazada:

http://www.lazada.com.ph/mxq-pro-tv-box-s905-quad-core-wifi-hdmi-20-media-player-eu-plug-6031638.html

it sells for P2,089, but got it forabout P1.8K after using a voucher.

My friend testifies to it being a very good player. after getting it, it updated four times with various FW upgrades up to the most recent. he plays android games on his TV using this

I also orderd one for x265 playability

Branding is quickplay, as it has the built-in wifi, and bluetooth features

You may want to sideload libreelec if your purpose is for video playing only.

Also. Performance is snappy with kodi if you connect a hard drive 2tb and below. Connected a 4tb and things became sluggish.

Am using this...

I just re-flashed it to Dec 2016 firmware you can find sa chinagadgetsreviews.com. Small improvements in the UI but still not possible for Kodi 16.1 to detect AV Receivers with TrueHD/DTS-HD.

hi, sir.  pa-OT please.. can you kindly ask your friend which gamepad is he using when playing Android games with this NMT?  appreciate it a lot if he provides the brand/model and connectivity i.e. thru USB dongle or thru bluetooth.

TIA!

Just an update with this box. After hours of research, flashing and tweaking I've gotten a stable Kodi install.

Kodi Jarvis 16.1 w/ DTS-HD & TrueHD working by using Libreelec firmware for Amlogic S905.

Do not install Kodi 17 on the MXQ because the Android firmware is non-compliant for HD Audio support.

How's the wifi connectivity of the MXQ?  Stable ba?  I got a Beelink GT1 kasi, which seems to only work well with a wired connection.  Planning to get MXQ for a second unit.

Initially I've had a lot of wifi issues with it.

However I realized that my own home network was also old (last wifi router I had was bought in 2010). It was when I made the decision to buy a newer wifi router that now I can stream reliably using wifi with my cellphones, tablets, laptops and other devices in the house.

The good news is that you don't have to spend a lot. Bumili ako ng trendnet na bago sa office warehouse and I am amazed how good it was considering it did not even cost more than 2500.

On hindsight, after reading the comments above from those who have tired the MXQ, I should have gotten this instead of the Kata Box.

This MXQ brand is also heavily counterfeited sa China so even though it says MXQ on the case, the manufacturers are different as well as the firmware. I still can't recommend this unless you're a techie na marunong ma-kilatis what to look for.

- Do NOT get the ones that have Rockchip processors. AmLogic S905 dapat.
- Do NOT get the ones that still have Kit-Kat. Bare minimum should be Android 5

I was lucky I was sold the AmLogic version pero grabe dami ng research na dinaanan ko, flashing, re-flashing before I found the right features I needed to work in my setup.

Thanks for the advice sir. I'm not a techie so I can't do the flashing/reflashing. Maybe I'll just get another Minix U1, or an Nvidia if it is affordable.

True... spending a little more will get you better support/firmware. That's why I also got a Wetek HUB. Out of the box, tumatakbo lahat ng files and HD Audio works.

I just got this as my second box.  I have used this out of the box (save for a few skin customizations), and compared to my other box (with 2gb RAM), it is a bit sluggish, but it works fine.  Even wifi connectivity is good.  As a second box, I am happy with the performance, so far.

That's good. However the effort to port SPMC using Krypton code is not going to be easy.

Very tempting for the price. Anyone tested IPTV channels via Kodi add-ons?
