Great that they added more screening venues this year. The use of UP Town Center is particularly of note to me, since it's much nearer to my place. ;D

Watched TUOS this afternoon. Well done & acted with excellent shots & editing. I particularly liked how they did the shadow play sequences, which I think was combined with some painterly background effects in post. The look achieved was outstanding & the transitions were seamless. For me, it's a good first movie watched this Cinemalaya 2016.

Pamilyang Ordinaryo (Eduardo Roy Jr.) *** - A married teenaged couple living out on their streets with their infant son, making ends meet through petty crime, has their baby stolen. This is the first of a series of independent Filipino films i will be seeing during the Cinemalaya Film Festival this week. And this is directed by someone I know personally, not to brag. If I was a professional critic, I wouldn't be reviewing this but since i'm not I will review it and give my rating and fortunately it's a really good one. It's not quite as great as his last film but it's still a solid drama. He wisely peppered this with humor so it wouldn't be too much of a misery porn. The ending is quite reminiscent of a DeSica film, I must say. I highly recommend people check this out.

pamilya ordinaryo was good indeed..felt sad in the end but i think it ended well. wasnt able to catch dagsin full house nksi and i was late even if i had a festival pass.. slept through most of i america, either because it was too long or i was just too tired for a late night screening.. might get to watch it again if time permits.. shorts A has some nice ones too..particularly liked Pektus, and i enjoyed Ang maangas, ang marikit at ang makata..

Hiblang Abo (Ralston Jover) **1/2 - This is my second film from the Cinemalaya Film Festival. This one is about a group of elderly living in a hospice home in a rural province as they reminisce about their respective dark pasts and contemplate on their regrets. I'm not a big fan of this one. I mean, I respect what it was trying to do. It's sort of a take on Wild Strawberries but playing with much darker notes. The performances of the four main actors are faultless, outstanding even. But overall, the film didn't really grab me as much as it should and cinematography is way too dark in some places.

KUSINA - Another fine entry to Cinemalaya 2016. With a screenplay that has won the grand prize at the 2006 Palanca Memorial Awards in Literature, the movie is made as a minimalist one setting theatrical play on film. This approach can sometimes cause a bit of a hitch in a few of the transition scenes, but it mostly works well as an unconventional stylistic choice. I feel a few of the supporting actors are a bit miscast, but the excellent performance of Judy Ann Santos as the lead holds it all together. The finale is also great; a perfectly shot ending to the film.

There were extended screenings today. Caught Shorts A.

Bugtaw (Awake) (Noah del Rosario) **1/2 - Two boys meet up to share their dreams. One boy's father died and the other left. It's a neat concept. The dreams are depicted in animation. But it needed a bit more flourish in the execution.

Ang Maangas, Ang Marikit at Ang Makata (The Cool, the Fool and the Lovely) (Jose Ibarra Guballa) *** - This is a period black comedy set in the Philippines roughly late 1800's to early 1900's. It's about a young woman who loves to dance but her father forbids it. Then two suitors show up. The film is actually genuinely funny. It is pretty strong entry then it dropped the ball on the ending. It seemed it didn't know how to end.

Mansyong Papel (Paper Mansion) (Ogos Aznar) ** - A matriarch of a Chinese-Filipino family sees her family falling apart with various fights and money problems. The film feels like it should be a longer feature but was chopped up into a short featuring highlight reels. The sound mix sucks. Not even veteran Perla Bautista can save it.

Nakauwi Na (Gone Home) (John Relano/Patrick Baleros/Luis Hidalgo) **1/2 - Two brothers reminisce about old times when one of them comes home after spending decades in the U.S. I'm puzzled how there could be three credited directors in this when it's largely just two people talking. Anyway, as this was going on, I predicted the ending coming a mile away. It was okay.

Pektus (Spin) (Isabel Quesada) ***1/2 - They saved the best for last. A young man who knocked up his girlfriend and an insurance salesman with a heart problem get into a traffic altercation. This somehow affects each of their lives. This is a funny, dark comedy that somehow manages to be oddly life affirming in the end without being sentimental. From the shorts, this is the one director whose work I will be looking out for in the future.

Isabel Quesada is actress Ces Quesada's daughter... Her mother was very supportive of her throughout the festival as she was always present during her screenings even in the awards night..

I put two and two together when I saw Ces Quesada in a small role as a complaining customer!
