Enclosure for Fostex FE126En
« on: Dec 28, 2016 at 07:26 AM »
Planning to build an enclosure for a pair of Fostex FE126En and would appreciate some advice.

As I mentioned in the Amplifier forum, I plan to have a small tube amp, possibly 10W/ch thereabouts so Fostex, having efficiency above 90db, would do nicely.

I also like the idea of having a 4-incher  produce good sound through proper cabinetry.

I am, right now, seriously considering the Frugel-Horm MarkIII (FH3) because it's simple and have read some good reviews about it.

But I am open to be convinced on alternatives.

I listen to a lot of orchestral music, 70's vocals (which my kids think is jologs, whatever that means), and also some quiet ambient new age when reading a book.

I think I have pretty good woodworking skills so construction difficulty, where necessary, will not daunt me.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks.  I had downloaded those Olson-Nagaoka plans, too, and I have both space and capability to build them.

I would appreciate any comments from those who may have built them or who are aware of the technical features and benefits of the ON against FH3.  From another thread, someone preferred the FH3; i.e. Longer horn versus larger mouth.  Frankly, I do not know the advantages/ trade-offs of these characteristics.

Have you decided on what enclosure will you be making?

If I we're to choose between the ON and FH3, I will probably start with the FH3 due to its simplicity and fewer materials/labor needed. But in the end, I will still make the ON because I am also curious on how it sounds and of course the eye-catching design/aesthetics it will impact on your listening room/experience. I have yet to see/hear an ON. Maraming nang may FH3, pero ON wala pa akong nakikita probably because it is harder to make. ON actually has a smaller footprint than FH3 (and smaller "breathing space" requirements) but has greater visual presence due to its structure and height. If ever gagawa ka ng ON, please let me hear it next time hehe

Sure!  If I get to build the ON, will let you hear it.

The woodworking challenge is actually not an issue for me.  I have made quite a number of cabinets and tables already.  The ON will be fairly simple for me.  All right angles, all butt joints (which I will probably enhance a bit with better joinery).

One problem though is that my source of Birch plywood has them only in 5'x5'.  Too short for the ON.

I can see that there's an ON in my future.  But, for now, I'd want to build something that sounds best for my 4-inch Fostex.  Ahhh...choices!

If it would not be abusing your kindness, I would love to hear it.  I still have your Yaqin!

Thanks.
