I'm enjoying an EL-34 SET amp made my Andrew Sevilla.

Build quality is excellent.  Was expecting a bare chassi but got some nice wood sidings, too.  Andrew even put in a phono input and a bias knob for when I get into he mood of going for KT-88s.

Sound is sweet.

Must admit there's an ever-so-slight hum.  But I'm using dangerously cheap cables for now.  Have good cables on the way so hope that'll solve the problem.
I'd rather add life to my years than years to my life.

I'm also using one made by Andrew Sevilla. Sonatina 5 PP EL84. I also experienced a loud hum when I connected the preout to my subwoofer. I rearranged the cables and the humming was gone.

yes, since mass manufactured amps are made with parts the are bought by the thousands, and labor costs will not be that high since
workers need not be highly skilled, in other words unit costs will be low...

units that sell for 100k can have a unit cost of just 10k because of that...this known as economy of scale....and manufacturing efficiency..

even if the locally diy amp may sell for only say 20k that would be more expensive in comparison....

it is in this context that i say DIY is more expensive....

there was a time during the 70's that parts were very cheap, i remember i could buy 12ax7 tubes for a peso each and power tube at around 30 pesos, but those days are gone, never to come back...

Okay na lang sana kung manufacturing efficiency ang reason ng lower cost. Ngayon, pati tolerances sobrang tight (to lower cost) kaya yun expected natin na tatagal for a decade would only last us 3-5 years.

cost is king, when buying caps by the thousand pieces, they get the cheapest part that they can get that meets design specs...

Commercial manufacturers see their amps as product. DIYers, most especially those who design and build their own, see them as works of art which reflect how they view themselves and their craft.
