The New Warriors
« on: Apr 06, 2017 at 12:48 AM »
Freeform, the cable and satellite TV channel owned by Disney, has ordered The New Warriors straight to series. The live-action series will be something different--it's a 30-minute comedy show that will feature teenage heroes on a journey into adulthood, except in this world, they're not quite super and not yet heroes.

The list of New Warrior members have not been revealed except for Squirrel Girl, currently a fan favorite heroine in the comics. Freeform is courting Cougar Town and Scrubs alum Kevin Biegel to pen the script and serve as showrunner on the comedy. 10 episodes have been ordered for The New Warriors, which joins Cloak & Dagger as the second Marvel Comics property on Freeform, with both series premiering in 2018.

New Warriors Cast

Marvel Entertainment has lined up the cast for their upcoming live-action Freeform series New Warriors, led by Doreen Green / Squirrel Girl actress Milana Vayntrub (This Is Us, AT&T commercials) and Derek Theler (Baby Daddy, Shark Killer) as Craig Hollis / Mister Immortal.

Joining (pictured above from left) Vayntrub and Theler are Jeremy Tardy (Dear White People) as Dwayne Taylor/Night Thrasher, Calum Worthy (Austin & Ally) as Robbie Baldwin/Speedball, Matthew Moy (2 Broke Girls) as Zack Smith/Microbe and Kate Comer (The Comeback) as Deborah Fields/Debrii.

“I am thrilled beyond belief to be working with this incredible group of actors. They are funny, sincere, eager, charming and perfectly embody these characters. It’ll be a blast and an honor to create this show with each of them, “ said showrunner Kevin Biegel (Enlisted).

“We’re so lucky to have assembled such a diverse and incredibly talented cast,” Marvel head of TV Jeph Loeb said. “We can’t wait for the fans to see what’s in store when we unleash these iconic characters into the world!”

The network has ordered ten 30-minute episodes slated to debut 2018.

Marvel’s New Warriors is about six young people with powers living and working together. With powers and abilities on the opposite end of the spectrum of The Avengers, the New Warriors want to make a difference in the world… Even if the world isn’t ready. Not quite super, not yet heroes, Marvel’s New Warriors is about that time in your life when you first enter adulthood and feel like you can do everything and nothing at once — except in this world, bad guys can be as terrifying as bad dates.

The series is co-produced by Marvel Television and ABC Signature Studios. Kevin Biegel (Cougar Town, Enlisted) will serve as showrunner and executive producer, with Marvel’s Jeph Loeb (Marvel’s The Defenders, Marvel’s Punisher) and Jim Chory (Marvel’s The Punisher, Marvel’s Inhumans) as executive producers.

Marvel's 'New Warriors' Won't Air on Freeform, Series Will Be Shopped Elsewhere

Marvel's highly anticipated take on New Warriors is on the move.

The half-hour scripted comedy, picked up straight to series at Freeform in April, will no longer air on the younger-skewing, Disney-owned cable network. Instead, sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Marvel will shop the live-action comedy to other outlets. Sources say there has been some talk that the 10-episode series from Kevin Biegel (Enlisted) could be taken to Disney's forthcoming subscription streaming service, though insiders stress that's a long shot.

The pilot — which stars Baby Daddy grad Derek Theler as Mister Immortal and This Is Us' Milana Vayntrub as fan-favorite Squirrel Girl — is said to have tested through the roof and caught the attention of high-level Disney executives. Insiders note that Freeform — which is expanding original programming to four nights a week in 2018 — could not find a slot for the show next year as it had originally intended. Marvel then asked for New Warriors back as the comic book powerhouse wants it to premiere in the new year. Freeform obliged.

"We are extremely excited about Marvel’s New Warriors and look forward to finding the perfect partner to launch the series with in 2018,” said Dan Buckley, president of Marvel Entertainment.
