desktop speaker
« on: May 31, 2017 at 02:47 PM »
so basically im seating in front of my desk for 6+ hours (work) and was watching these "dream desk" vids in youtube. some speakers there are not available here.

what can you recommended for a computer speaker that is budget friendly and/or delivers outstanding sound?

so far i've seen audioengine, bose, also considering q acoustics pero needs amp pa or others. 2 or 2.1 setup max. i have limited space and need to put cactus on both sides :D

ay sige search ko nga. preferably yun available sana dito

so far these are the options pero nothing is final pa.
 - bose companion 5 (probably not new due to price and reviews compared sa cheaper options)
 - audioengine (pero mix reviews sa youtube)
 - q acoustics 2010i or 3010 depends sa size and need pa ng amp :(
 - other options.

if you want a world class killer desktop set up then a KEF LS50 powered by a clean sounding  amp would be hard to beat. Add in a musical sub to complete the system
Pioneer Elite/Dynaudio/REL 7.1 THX
Pioneer DDJ SR2/Pioneer DM60/Mac Air M1
Sonos/NHT 2,1 sub sat

I owned Bose Companion 5. NOT RECOMMENDED.

The control pod broke down in 3 months of moderate use. Then I ordered a replacement. After 6 months the subwoofer broke down and there was a burnt smell coming out of it.

Take note, I own an array of Bose speakers including floorstanders but Companion 5 sucked big time in terms of quality control.

Great tip Sir @emorej2015.

I have the M50W 2.1 powered speaker. Bang for buck. I think it is available locally. This brand exceeded my expectations and even outlasted the Bose Companion 5.

^ Check if PCHUB has the M50W (this is 2.1) in stock. The M100 MKII (this is 2.0) is also an excellent bang for buck contender.  These Swans are powered speakers.

im looking at 10-12 unless there is a compelling reason to go beyond that. if there is a cheaper bang for the buck option, i'll check it out too.

Just a few pics unboxing the Swans M50W:

Take note of the pair of white cloth gloves which came with the box. Why? Because the speakers (satellites and sub) have a nice walnut finish while the top is a shiny black piano lacquer surface. That delicate finish on top is a total fingerprint magnet.

The satellites and sub came wrapped in individual bags made of durable fabric.

These specs don't necessarily give the entire picture, just for reference. Your ears will stilll be your best judge when you audition the speaker.

I did not buy my M50W locally. I got it from Funan in Singapore about two years ago and it was a promotional sale I couldn't resist for almost an equivalent ten grand. I auditioned every single Swans desktop speakers on display. When I heard John Coltrane's sax on the M50W with natural tonal quality and Diana Krall's vocals in her signature drawl without sounding hazy, I did not think twice making a purchase. A lesser-quality speaker will never sound "natural" to my ears.

I posted an earlier comment here:

also reading about it now... i guess im narrowing down to two options: audioengine a2+ and this swan.

at least di na mahirap mamili except maraming options sa swan while sa audioengine isa nalang.

may isang dangkal ba yun height nun m50w?

Satellites: almost isang dangkal ang height. The sub is a bit more than that.

Just want to mention in passing and I know it's not in your shortlist.

I also nearly bought the Audioengine B2. This is a single-cabinet 2.0 speaker with bluetooth. I like the overall sound signature of this one but it lacks bass. Medyo bitin lang kapag yung playlist ko merong songs with considerable bass, and I don't really listen to bass-heavy hip-hop songs. On Amazon this is listed at $179 (about P8900 at current rate). It's priced at nearly P16k locally.
