Speaker Question
« on: Aug 25, 2017 at 06:46 PM »
Kids at home develop a habit of turning the amp knobs, today I forgot to check the knob so when I turned on my amp...Boom naka full blast pla. The speakers & sub seems working normally naman. Check ko din if napunit Hindi naman.
What do I have to observe or expect after putting the speakers to a full blast? How about yung amp? Is there something to observe to? TIA

Try to test your speakers using music that you're very familiar with. A torn speaker is just one manifestation of damage but there is something else that cannot be visibly, easily seen. Now, if you don't hear any grating, clacking or buzzing sound, then your speakers are okay.

I also had a similar experience. Someone turned up the knob without my knowing. Thankfully the speakers are still okay.  I am using a set of B&W floorstanders. Very durable.

Maglagay na rin ng note/reminder sa amp para di malimutan.

Haha, I know the feeling. I had "Victim Of Love" by the Eagles when it happened. Bira agad ng malakas na sound dahil mabangis yung intro ng song. Naramdaman ko parang tumayo ang buhok sa likod ng batok ko when I heard the screaming volume.

Since I treat my system with utmost care, hindi na naulit. I have implemented house rules in my mancave and nobody touches anything. Hehehe. Of course, the kids have their own stuff to play with in their own space in the den so they can fiddle with their own gears.

Just try to observe if anything doesn't sound "right" in the next few days while you use your speakers.  Should there be any damage that isn't visible, at least it will manifest itself in the sound kung meron nga. I am hoping all is well.

Uy fave ko yang victim of love. Yung grandson ko ang Lagi nag turn ng knob. Naughty eh. Becoz of what happened feeling ko tuloy prang naiba tunog though wala naman strange sound, more on baka nabawasan ang bass or twitter. Maybe ako Lang yun. Sana wala naman na damage.

teka sirs, is there any way to know if volume knob turned to max while avr is off?  usually digital knob sila so there's no turn limit kahit ilan beses 360degrees turned to the right.. or sa integ amp meron?

anyway, check your amp/avr if there's a setting of "turn-on" volume level... mine (though an avr) is set to level 30... so even if i turn it off at >50level, when turned on it is always back to volume 30 level

thats true sa avr bumabalik yung lowest volume pag turn ON mo depende sa setting i put my denon avr sa minimum 20 so nka lock lng sya dun. Sa integ amp ko nman mdyo vintage na manual knob talaga volume nya so double ingat nalang pg npag laruan ng mga bata. ng yari na rin sa akin sagad volume to the max diko npansin kakagulat yung lakas buti hindi napunit speakers ko hehe. ;D kaya now mg lalagay ako ng speaker holder with fuse sa + line ng amp binding post to speaker + terminal just in case kc mas mataas ang wattage ng amp ko kaysa speaker...pero mas gusto ko yung tunog ng ganun busog na busog yung speakers. :)

Nope its more safer higher amp than speakers. Try to google it... Just type 100 watts amp in to 50 watts speakers it will give you a lot of result. Just read lang whats their comments about it.

Im using 105 watts integ amp in to 85 watts speakers not so big difference. Planning to put fuse holder lang just in case hehe.

To simplify things, just check the manual volume settings of the integrated amp before turning it on. There are other ways of "controlling" the volume when turned on like adding a separate potentiometer in the input. However it would only complicate things further. And even if you add a separate potentiometer, you will still have to check the manual volume setting of the integrated amp. Lalo lang dadami ang intindihin. It's the TS din naman who will power up the amp so most likely manual din ang pag-turn on ng power niyan. So before you turn it on, a simple check on the volume control, or to simplify it even further, before yoou power up your amp, just turn the volume knob all the way to zero.

combinations I tried using big S/S power (not AVR power but separate amp muscle):

1000w x 2 RMS @ 4 ohms paired to 150 watt bookshelf speakers/150 watt floor stand
400W x 2 rms @ 4 ohms paired to 150 watt bookshelf speakers
400W x 2 rms @ 4 ohms paired to 150 watt floor stand speakers
200W x 2 rms @ 4 ohms paired to 150 watt floor stand speakers

never had issues.

Ako its my normal routine to lower the volume first before hitting play although wala naman bata na nakikialam ng gears ko pero its better to be safe than magka heart attack ka sa gulat hehehehe

This happened to me before but it was my brand new NAD T752 receiver, the receiver was defective, some software issues.. Intemittent na na seset sa full volume yung receiver upon turning on. Twice nangyari na pag on ko and hit play biglang boom. I remember pinost ko pa yung issue na yun dito so many years ago

if the system plays well sa level na ginagamit mo siya dati pa i guess wala naman problema. kung wala output tweets o kaya may nagkasayad woofer yun na. madali naman madinig distortion lalo na kung very familiar ka sa gears mo.
Without the proper image, all else is background music.

Routine ko rin na lower the volume before hitting play pero minsan it happen na nakalimutan. Actually nung time na yun I already holding the knob & about to turn counter kaya Lang mabilis yung intro nung song, w vocals & instruments agad.

I agree.

In my case I'm using a 380 watts/channel (RMS) Power Amplifier to drive a 200 watts/channel (RMS) speaker, and its fine.

The way I understand why its safer to use a more powerful amplifier, is that the distortion noise generated at higher volume levels are more on less powerful amplifiers, and it's this distortion noise that will ruin the speakers especially the tweeters where these distortion noise are directed.

Pwede din naman lagyan ng tape yun volume knob. Kapag natangal, it means somebody turned it.
