Install rca out on a hp amp
« on: Oct 02, 2017 at 09:50 PM »
Can we install an rca out on an headphone amp so it can work as a pre amp? I asked because i have a very good hp amp, the busron ha160 that i'd like to use as a pre amp for my power amp. Is it as simple as tapping the hp out and connecting an rca out? Or are there other steps involved? I was just wondering if the hp amp will also be good as a pre amp.

Thank you.

You can simply use a 1/4" plug to RCA male stereo cable and plug it to the high impedance jack. You may have to insert a voltage divider if the output at very low volume setting is very high, say your amp/speakers already distort at 9-10oclock volume setting.

Thank you sir tony and sir markcrenz. I wanted to use an rca as i'd like the hp out to be open so i could use it when needed. Can i simply tap the high impedance port and connect cables to it going to an rca out?

After a bit of confusion as to why there are two jacks, I finally realised due to the volume levels coming out of the two that the one on the left is meant for high impedance 'phones (300ohm and over I think) and the one on the right is for low impedance cans as well as IEMS.

You want to use the left output port (high impedance) as the RCA out?  You may need one of these (photo from Amazon)

Tap as in solder wires inside? Parang sayang naman, you'll devalue your HA160 if you do that. Cable na lang, pwede naman bunutin if you want to use hp. TRS plug should be the same size (1/8 or 1/4") as the jack of course.

i refuse to do this mod on a good working unit........

Thank you sirs. So it's better to use the high impedance output compared to the low impedance output?

headphone outs are low impedance outputs, 600 ohm or less is typical,
amplifer inputs are high impedance, more than 10k is typical,
so i do not see anything to worry about that much
unless your highs are taking a hit which is highly unlikely...
so just use those interconnects and enjoy the music....

I have used a Violectric HPA V100 headphone amp to drive a Musical Fidelity M6PRX using a cable like this:
