Lets start a discussion. 5 or 6 yrs ago when i bought my plasma, may nabasa ko dito na mas ok not to use the built in media player dahil it makes the tv work harder therefore shortening its lifespan. I bought a cheap xtreamer player and my tv lasted 5 yr plus, never had any problems until ngka issue yung hdmi 1 (but was still usable). I would like to know if its still the case now. Would you prefer using the tvs app like netflix and youtube rather than buying a separate box? Ako gusto ko yung apps ng smart tv dahil sa ease of navigation and ganda ng interface compare to android boxes (except the high end ones maybe). For movies dapat siguro separate box pa din because of HD sound format (connected to receiver), but for streaming, ok lang kaya? Lalo na pag marathon watching sessions? What are your thoughts?

it's all about heat build-up kaya nashoshorten ang lifespan nya. stressing it produces more heat so technically walang pagkakaiba several years ago. if you have a good ventilation/cooling sa TV then it doesn't matter, stress it all you want.

if you are using its built in media player of course that has some wear and tear effect on the said media player, otherwise the wear and tear of the separate media player you use.

Ask ko lang, my samsung 6303 always read the audio of my movies played via USB as DTS.  my media player does not see it to be so. I feel it weird.

we have a 7 year old samsung led, it's built-in media player have been used since day 1. no issues up to now. so i don't think it would shorten it's lifespan.

Do you do marathon watching sessions? Ngayon kasi ang dali mag marathon sessions, whether watching it from netflix, iflix, etc or downloading full seasons ng tv series.

Back in the day, the processing power of a smart tv was barely enough to do 1080p. There's definitely added wear and tear to the tv if the media player is used, particularly in areas with bad ventilation.

These days, 4k 60Hz is a breeze to a 2017 tv. :)
