MasterChef
« on: Sep 03, 2011 at 12:16 PM »
Season 2 of the U.S. version just concluded its run on the Lifestyle Network. While it's okay, I didn't really care much for the annoyingly loud and grating American Idol-style preliminary rounds, which took about 3 episodes and seems to have been set in the same dingy warehouse that the Ark of the Covenant is stored in Raiders of the Lost Ark, LOL.

To his credit, Gordon Ramsay seems to be less of an ass here than in his other shows; he actually seems nice here, and I had to double check to make sure it's the same person, heh. And Joe Bastianich appears to have none of the caring and warmth of his famous mom, but he does make a good and scary judge though.

The lighting and studio set of this show bothers me--it looks garish and the colors are too saturated, plus everyone seems to have a permanent spotlight on them. The main difference between MasterChef and other cooking competition shows are the contestants, who are mostly home cooks with no professional training, and it shows--most of them can't take criticism and rejection well, resulting in tears and even pleading to the judges not to eliminate them. But as always whenever colorful personalities and big egos clash, there's always drama, and MasterChef has plenty of contestants trash-talking and screaming at each other, LOL.

MasterChef also has a Junior version (in Australia and also here), which I think is unnecessary, concept-wise, as kids generally don't know anything about food except to load it with tons of sugar. Kids who claim to know and cook good food probably has some scheming parent behind them dictating everything they do, but that's just me.  ;)  Everyone is so nice and goody-goody to avoid hurting the kids' feelings that it makes the entire idea of competing pointless, and turns the show into a cooking class/praisefest.

I think Ramsay's demeanor here is more of an image move. Imagine, he actually hugs the contestants! :) Bastianich took the ass/Cowell role. Is the third judge still Graham Elliot? I didn't like his comments in the first season. Actually, if you watch really closely, Elliot and Bastianich have ear monitors. This means they were being coached on what to do or say. I didn't catch if Ramsay also wore an ear monitor. I'd like to think he didn't because he's already a veteran after 9 seasons of Hell's Kitchen.

I couldn't believe it when I saw Ramsay actually hugging and even rubbing the head of some of the male contestants. And he actually says, "delicious" here so many times, I lost count--I keep expecting him to spit out the food after tasting it. :D

And yup, Graham Elliot is still with the judges. Didn't notice the earpieces; good catch! And you're right about Ramsay--after having so many shows, he probably adlibs his own lines by now, hehe.

Mukha namang genki gumalaw.  Did you see him use that bouncy thing and catch the football?   Chubby rin yata si Joe The Mean Guy nung araw.

Sabi ng Wife ko hindi raw talaga blind si Christine.  hehehe.  I couldnt believe how she was able to copy that Sashimi dish served to Obama by Mr. Chubby.  Pero maiyak-iyak and grabe excitement from the Top 6 towards the finale.  I learned how to cook steak nga pala properly with that fillet mignon pressure challenge...hehehe

Ang tanong ko, how will they react sa Adobong Manok and Sweet Filipino Spaghetti.

Has anyone here see the Pinoy edition of MasterChef?

And I think the Masterchef Junior edition of the U.S. is pretty good.

really? masipat nga. we stopped watching last season ata or the past two. medyo hindi interesting contestants. my wife and I prefer Masterchef Australia though. Although matagal siya at 60 episodes++ per season.
