Hard disk Enclosures

What hard disk enclosure do you use for JBOD (just a bunch of disks/non-RAID)?

I can't find a nice 3-4 disk enclosure locally.

Hi Peorth, I also have a Probox HF2-SU3S2 but my experience it that it disconnects intermittently. Does this happen also with your Proboxes?

Thanks

I had no problems with it. I pulled it out of my mainstream use only when I shifted over to a NAS.

Are you using a Synology NAS?

My Probox' fan has this annoying noise although I haven't encountered the disconnection issue.

Anyway, I'm using a Synology NAS now and I've been happy with it ever since especially when my data and media files are conveniently accessible from any device 24-7, even remotely when I'm out and about. The cost of a NAS is high but it's worth it.

Yup. I have a DS416. Looking back it would have been better if I hadn't purchased the Probox and instead just saved up directly to buy the nas.

Nope, I never have disconnections. I rarely turn on the Proboxes though, especially now that I installed 2 x 8 Tb WD Red NAS HDDs in the desktop rig. However, I sometimes turn them on for many hours at a time and they don't disconnect

The problem with the Probox is that the provided external power supply ("adapter") is unreliable. I actually have 3 of these Proboxes, one is no longer used because the circuit board failed. Of the 3 power bricks, 2 have already died. I currently power one Probox off the desktop's 750W Seasonic PSU using a DIY 12 volt power tap. If the last brick dies I'll just do a little rewiring and power both boxes off the PC's PSU.

My Probox' fan has this annoying noise although I haven't encountered the disconnection issue.

The Probox's fan is really noisy, that's a given which has been reiterated by feedback from numerous users. At the lowest fan speed I find it tolerable, however at maximum speed it sounds like a vacuum cleaner. Good thing that you can control the fan speed manually or automatically, I leave mine on Auto and the box runs the fan at the lowest speed setting. However if you're gonna do heavy duty file transfer for many hours I suggest manually ramping up the fan speed, as I've never seen the Auto setting increase the fan speed even in the middle of summer (the Auto setting is supposed to change fan speed depending on the HDD temperature).

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I'll leaning on getting the Synology DS418J.
