Len Wiseman to Direct Swamp Thing Pilot

The live-action DC Universe adaptation of the classic antihero Swamp Thing is moving along nicely with the addition of Sleepy Hollow‘s Len Wiseman as executive-producer and director for the pilot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The drama follows what happens when CDC researcher Abby Arcane returns to her childhood home of Houma, Louisiana, in order to investigate a deadly swamp-borne virus. There, she develops a surprising bond with scientist Alec Holland — only to have him tragically taken from her. But as powerful forces descend on Houma, intent on exploiting the swamp’s mysterious properties for their own purposes, Abby will discover that the swamp holds mystical secrets, both horrifying and wondrous — and the potential love of her life may not be dead after all.

Mark Verheiden (Battlestar Galactica, Netflix’s Daredevil) and Gary Dauberman (It) are attached to co-write the series and act as showrunners, with James Wan (Aquaman) set to executive-produce the series.

Swamp Thing made his comic book debut back in 1971 and has maintained his position as a staple of the DCU since then, including seminal runs written by Alan Moore, Brian K. Vaughan, Mark Millar, and Scott Snyder. The character was previously adapted into a feature film from Wes Craven in 1982, which spawned a sequel seven years later, and a USA Network series that ran for three seasons in the early ’90s. Dick Durock took on the role in both the films and the series. An animated Swamp Thing series also debuted in the early ’90s but only aired five episodes.

Swamp Thing Series to Have Hard-R Tone, Practical Suit

In an interview with /Film, IT writer Gary Dauberman has confirmed that DC Universe‘s upcoming live-action Swamp Thing is expected to be a hard-R rated style series thanks to the creative freedom on the DC Universe platform.

“We always set out to make Swamp Thing as hard R as we could and go graphic with the violence, with the adult themes and make it as scary as possible,” Dauberman said. “Because we’re doing it through the DC streaming service, they really pushed us, although they didn’t have to push hard, for us to go as extreme as we could. We really took our inspiration from the Alan Moore run in Swamp Thing, this landmark I think run. Fans of that series will know it gets pretty weird and extreme and scary. We really wanted to live up to that standard that Moore set up back in the ‘80s. Then of course it allows us, Swamp Thing himself looks incredible what Justin Raleigh and the guys over at Fractured are doing with the suit. So it’s going to look amazing and less of the “man in suit” that you’ve seen in the movie and the other TV show.”

Derek Mears May Be DC Universe’s Swamp Thing

Splash Report and Bloody Disgusting are reporting that Derek Mears has been cast as Swamp Thing for DC Universe’s upcoming show. The report is currently unconfirmed by DC Universe, but Mears has extensive experience performing in heavy makeup and prosthetics. Mears played Jason Voorhees in the Friday the 13th reboot, as well as numerous creatures in Sleepy Hollow, Men in Black II, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., and more.

Bloody Disgusting’s report suggests that Mears will not be portraying Swamp Thing’s human self, Dr. Alec Holland. However, if the report is accurate, Mears will be carrying the series as the titular creature. Former Teen Wolf and Gotham star Crystal Reed was recently cast as Abigail Arcane, the female lead of this series. In the show, Abigail is a researcher who bonds with Alec while investigating “a deadly swamp-borne virus.” After Alec’s apparent demise, he is reborn as the Swamp Thing and the defender of the green before reuniting with Abigail.

DC Universe will premiere Swamp Thing season 1 in 2019.
