'Rogue One' Spinoff Series Enlists 'Americans' Producer as Showrunner

Disney+ had enlisted a showrunner for its prequel series to Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

The Americans producer Stephen Schiff will oversee the series, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. The series stars Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, and will follow the Rebel spy during the early days of the Rebellion.

When the series was announced earlier this month, Luna said of reprising his role, "We have a fantastic adventure ahead of us, and this new exciting format will give us the chance to explore this character more deeply.”

Rogue One Series Has A Filming Date

Production Weekly, a website that tracks film and television production information and schedules, has posted on Twitter that the series will beginning production in October of 2019. Obviously this means the live-action series will not debut with other new shows such as The Mandalorian when Disney+ launches at the end of next year.

If they shoot things expeditiously, perhaps we could see something as early as summer 2020, fingers crossed.

Disney+’s ‘Star Wars’ Spinoff Series ‘Rogue One’ Sets Adria Arjona To Co-Star With Diego Luna

Adria Arjona is set to star opposite Diego Luna in Disney Plus’ Star Wars series based on the Cassian Andor character Luna played in the 2016 spinoff film Rogue One. Denise Gough, Genevieve O’Reilly, Stellan Skarsgard and Kyle Soller also are on board.

A Disney spokesperson declined to comment.

Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, is set to write the pilot for the series in addition to directing multiple episodes. He is also serving as series show-runner.

Character details of who Arjona will be playing are unknown.

Arjona breakout role came on Legendary’s Pacific Rim: Uprising, where she co-starred opposite John Boyega and Scott Eastwood. She would follow that up with key roles in Life of the Party, Triple Frontier and most recently in the Michael Bay action pic, 6 Underground. She can be seen next in Sony’s extended Marvel Universe pic Morbius, which also stars Jared Leto and Matt Smith.

‘Black Mirror’s Toby Haynes To Direct ‘Rogue One’ Spin-Off Series At Disney+ As Tony Gilroy Steps Aside As Director

As Disney+ prepares to start production on its new Rogue One spinoff series, it will be doing so with a new director as sources tell Deadline Toby Haynes will helm the first three episodes, replacing Tony Gilroy.

Sources say Gilroy dropped off as director for COVID-19-related travel reasons. Gilroy lives in New York and had to make a decision quickly on whether he would head over to the UK for the shoot; in the end, he thought it would be best that he stay in New York and have Haynes take over his directing duties.

Haynes already was high on the list of directors who would helm future episodes and since he also already was in the UK, all parties thought this would make the most sense. Gilroy will stay very much involved with the series as exec producer and showrunner.

Cassian Andor: Diego Luna Confirms Disney+ Series Has Begun Filming

In a recent appearance at Jimmy Kimmel Live, Narcos: Mexico alum Diego Luna has confirmed that production has already started on Disney+’s upcoming Star Wars spinoff series in London. Without revealing any major spoilers, Luna also teased that the Cassian Andor series will help fans have a much better understanding of Rogue One.

“It’s basically everything you have to know to understand Rogue One,” Luna said. “The story of the character before. I can spoil the ending I guess!”

He added, “It’s nice to go into a story you already know the ending. Now you can take the nuances and the layers. I think it’s fun to do something that isn’t just about getting to the end. It’s about delaying that.”

Star Wars: Andor Star Confirms Season 2 Plans for Disney+ Series

In a recent interview with Swedish news site Dagens Nyheter, Star Wars: Andor star Stellan Skarsgård has teased an interesting new detail about the upcoming Disney+ series ahead of its long-awaited debut later this year. While talking about his filming schedule for this year, the acclaimed actor confirmed that he is currently slated to start production on the not-yet-announced second season of Star Wars: Andor in the autumn of this year after completing his work on Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two.

“We start with [filming Dune: Part Two] in July,” Skarsgård revealed in the Swedish-language interview (via Comic Book). “And then in the autumn, it’s time for the second season of the Star Wars series Andor.”

When asked about the potential release of the Andor Season 2, Skarsgård stated “I do not know when they will start broadcasting it. It will take some time so that it does not take too long between season one and season two.”

Star Wars: Andor Reportedly Reduces Planned Season Count

Officially, Disney+ Star Wars series Andor only has a single season in the works. Twelve episodes to document the adventures of Diego Luna’s title character before the events of Rogue One. However, in a recent interview, Director of Photography Adriano Goldman let slip that the show has much more in store than that, although they may not be as grand as initially planned.

According to the interview (which was filmed in Portuguese), Goldman stated that the show he signed up for was planned for five seasons initially, and it has been scaled back to three. This could all mean several different things depending on how Disney is planning on releasing the show onto their streaming service. No matter what, it appears that a second season is on the way, which was also stated by star Stellan Skarsgård.

Andor‘s first batch features 12 episodes, which is longer than any other Star Wars television project so far. It’s possible that Disney’s plan for Andor started with a set number of episodes to tell their story rather than a specific season order. This would mean that the show simply rearranged how many episodes are in each season rather than cutting away some of that sweet Rogue One lore.

This show is running under the radar of most people's watch lists even if it is the best show Disney+ has ever produced.

Better than WandaVision, better than The Mandalorian, and far better than the Star Wars sequel and prequel series, I would rank this show on the same level as Rogue One.

It is very grown up, almost has a neo-noir feel to it.  The acting is intense, particularly for Diego Luna (Cassian Andor), Stellan Skarsgård (Luthen), and Andy Serkis (Kino Loy).  Theatre actors Kyle Soller (Syril) and Denise Gough (Imperial Lieutenant Dedra Meero) also put in memorable performances.

This is must watch television, even for non-fans of Star Wars.

^  Yup, I'm currently on episode 9 and it is a smartly written and very grown-up story as compared to all other Star Wars fare. The series' feel is more of an espionage-drama rather than the usual space action-adventure genre that most are expecting. I think most kids will be bored by the much slower pacing and the dialogue driven plot, but adults should give it a chance.

The production design, script and cinematography are also of a far higher quality than all the other Disney+ shows.  There is a constant reminder to the viewer that the protagonists are like real people in the star wars universe, as opposed to jedis, siths, admirals, princesses, etc, but there is also the continued intercourse between darkness vs light throughout the series.  The interweaving of stories is also quite seamless.

This one is definitely one of the best Star Wars Series to date. A lot better than Obi Wan actually, which depended too much on nostalgia and fan service.

I agree that this is a mature series and has very complex characters, at times I forget that this is Star Wars Series because of how different the tone is. Episode 10 - One Way Out is a favorite, and who knew that Mom Mothma can be that interesting. I am quite excited to watch the finale tomorrow!
