The Penguin HBO Max Series Starring Colin Farrell Casts Cristin Milioti

Cristin Milioti is joining Colin Farrell in “The Batman” spinoff series centered on The Penguin at HBO Max, Variety has learned.

Exact plot details for the series, which is currently titled “The Penguin,” are under wraps. It is believed to take place in the immediate aftermath of the events of “The Batman.” Farrell will reprise the role of the infamous Batman villain, whom he played in the film.

Milioti will star as Sofia Falcone, the daughter of Gotham mob boss Carmine Falcone. John Turturro played Carmine in “The Batman,” with The Penguin serving as his right-hand man.

Sofia was originally introduced in the Batman comic books in the mid-1990s.

Variety exclusively reported that Farrell had signed on to star in “The Penguin” in December 2021, with HBO Max officially ordering the show to series in March 2022. Lauren LeFranc serves as writer, executive producer and showrunner.

The Penguin: The Batman Spin-off Series’ Timeline Revealed

Not a whole lot is known about the upcoming HBO series The Penguin, but in a recent interview with Variety, HBO Max’s Sarah Aubrey revealed where fans can expect the series to take place.

Aubrey, who serves as Head of Originals for HBO Max, was asked about how The Penguin will fit into the world of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, which has plans to expand even further out in the future. Aubrey not only revealed that The Penguin will take place directly after the first film, but will also act as a bridge for the series in between its first and second movies, and show more of Oswald Cobblepot’s life.

“Penguin will sit immediately after the end of The Batman and temporally before the events of the second movie. The show will come out in between the two movies. Now beyond that, it’s fun for the audience to know that it will be a bridge between the two, but the actual release date, I’m not at liberty to say,” Aubrey revealed.

“The goal of this is to show what Oz’s life is like, and that’s very much in the streets of Gotham, trying to get up and over as only the Penguin can. As a hustler and a strategist with his own ambitions. It is a great example of having the time over eight episodes to tell a longer-arc character story with a lot of delicious twists and turns and new characters. It’s very much going to be about Gotham at that street level because he’s not flying around like Batman does. We are all embracing that as a very specific experience for audiences to have.”

The Penguin Episode Count Revealed for HBO Max Series

The Batman star Colin Farrell has revealed the episode count for the upcoming HBO Max spin-off series that will revolve around his character, The Penguin.

While speaking to Variety, the actor explained that the series will start shortly after the end of The Batman and clarified how long the show will be.

“It’s going to be an eight-part thing,” Farrell said. “Around Oz’s rise to power, filling that power vacuum created when Falcone was killed. Matt’s idea was to have the Penguin show begin about a week after the end of the Batman film. And if it works, if the trajectory is interesting, and the audience goes for it, and we do our jobs right, the second Penguin feature will pick up where the HBO show will end.”

‘The Penguin’ HBO Max Series Adds Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Deirdre O’Connell

“The Penguin” continues to expand its ensemble, as the DC limited series has added Michael Kelly, Shohreh Aghdashloo and Deirdre O’Connell to its cast. Character details for the three actors remain under wraps.

Kelly is best known for his roles in Netflix’s “House of Cards” and Amazon’s “Jack Ryan.” Aghdashloo earned critical acclaim for her performance in 2003’s “House of Sand and Fog” and starred in the Syfy series “The Expanse.” O’Connell won a Tony award last year for her performance in “Dana H.” and has appeared in numerous films and series since her first credits in the 1980s.

The eight-episode limited series stars Colin Farrell, reprising his role as the eponymous comic book villain after first appearing in last year’s DC Studios feature “The Batman.”
